How do we best help youth realize their potential to become committed, informed and effective civic actors in this digital age? In Oakland, CA, the National Writing Project is working with the Civic Engagement Research Group at Mills College and teachers from the Oakland Unified School District to develop curriculum and opportunities that will allow high school students across the district to engage critically in civic and political life. The project, funded by the S.D. Bechtel Foundation and titled "Educating for Democracy in the Digital Age," is a multi-year effort - the largest of its kind in the nation - aimed at infusing a civic engagement focus into the OUSD high school experience.
Join Ellen Middaugh of CERG, Stan Pesick of the Bay Area Writing Project, and OUSD teachers Patrick Friedman and Jah-Yee Woo as they discuss their work launching the project and its importance to the lives of OUSD youth.
