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

AND THEN, TWO YEARS LATER, THE BATTLE FOR NORMANDY BEGAN WITH 101ST AIRBORNE TROOPS AIR DROPPING BEHIND THE GERMAN COASTAL DEFENSE WITH A MISSION TO DESTROY THE HUGE GERMAN HOWITZERS THAT WOULD BE AIMED AT THE APPROACHING FLEET LOADED WITH TROOPS. DESPITE HIGH LOSSES ON THE TRIP IN, THE BRAVE PARATROOPS DID A REMARKABLE JOB. AND FINALLY, JUNE 6, THE MASSIVE SEABORNE ALLIED INVASION OF NORMANDY BEGAN, "THE LONGEST DAY" WHICH EARLY ON WAS IN DOUBT BUT ENDED WITH A GREAT VICTORY AND THE BEGINNNG OF THE END FOR HITLER.

SO THE QUESTION IS: WHY DO WE NOT REMEMBER DAYS LIKE THESE AND WHY DO WE NO LONGER TEACH ABOUT THEM IN SCHOOL? THE BEST WAY TO AVOID FUTURE MISTAKES IS TO UNDERSTAND THE PAST, AND WE ARE WOEFULLY INADEQUATE IN THIS AREA.  WE'LL TALK ABOUT IT THURSDAY MORNING AT 8 ON NORTH FLORIDA WRITER LIVE. I HOPE YOU'LL JOIN US.
