Traumatic Brain Injury: Providing Care and Support to Students

What do you do when your school calls and says your child has sustained a severe head injury? How do you cope with a TAG child who is now a special needs child? What are the stages of grief that families move through?

These are questions I had answered when I attended a recent half-day workshop on TBI, led by Patricia Sublette, Ph.D and education coordinator for the state of Oregon for TBI. Patricia shared valuable case histories and ideas for helping students through the maze of choices in care and support. I was surprised to know that although many school sports programs inform student athletes and staff on how to recognize and provide proper initial protocols for injuries, there are schools that could do a better job. Awareness and proactive training can really help when an injury takes place.
I was able to discuss some assistive technology options that came up during our session. Having some AT tools can be a valuable help for these students.

Patricia will be interviewed on No Limits to Learning Live on Tuesday, April 29th at 10:30 a.m. Pacific.

When Carol Reese, speech pathologist, discovered the Tango! speech device, she had to try it with one of her students in the fourth grade. Taylor took to it instantly. The next challenge was how to afford it. A $7000 speech device with a built in digital camera, recording for assignable messages to images and a whole lot of bells and whistles was great, but where would the money come from?
Listen in as Carol shares the miracle that put the device under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning and even involved a call from the company CEO in New York City!
Taylor will use his device to share also in this very special premeire blog talk radio segment.
