Many of us wear two hats in our lives. In the case of Maureen Bay, owner of Gem of an Idea in Fair Haven, the second hat is really more of a helmet. A motorcycle helmet. In 2012, approximately 27 million people in the United States operated a motorcycle, and approximately 6.7 million were women. So what do women really want? According to a study commissioned by Harley-Davidson, they might want a motorcycle. Female riders were twice as likely as their non-riding counterparts to feel confident and were twice as likely to feel extremely satisfied with their appearance. More than half of those riders said the two-wheeled experience made them feel free and independent. Maureen and her husband Bill have 5 Harleys. One is a 1967 model with an attached 1939 Goulding sidecar. Bill drives with Maureen alongside holding Scooter, an English Bull Terrier. “We do turn a few heads,” says Maureen. But women also want jewelry, and that brings me back to Maureen’s first hat, as owner of Gem of an Idea which has been around for over 30 years. She has taught jewelry making and has increased her Gemology credentials from the Gemological Institute of America. Maureen has been involved in the jewelry industry since 1972. She’s seen it all from men proposing in her store, to cutting off wedding bands after a divorce. I bet Maureen even knows the answer to this burning question: Does the second wife really get the bigger ring?
