The holidays are here and adults are thinking about their toys. Adult toys that is. The adult sex toy industry is huge and continues to grow, and my day at the Exxxotica Expo in October convinced me these toys have gone 100% mainstream. The success of Fifty Shades of Grey is responsible for a new relaxed and experimental attitude towards sex (ok, doesn’t anyone recall the 1960’s?). There’s been a ripple effect on media coverage for women and their ancillary interests and spending habits. Sales of sex toys, vibrators, lingerie and bondage gear are booming. The market for vibrators in the US is approximately $1 billion, while the market for condoms is only around $450 million. FYI: Hamilton Beach patented the first electric vibrator in 1902, a decade before it introduced the electric iron and vacuum cleaner. During the current sexual revolution, we don't need to frequent sex shops. Thanks to the internet, there are some classy, upscale sites to explore and purchase toys. I met Janine Breland, CEO of Toy Closet NYC, at Exxxotica in Edison. She’s a woman who knows her toys. After several years in the adult industry, Janine started The Toy Closet, Inc, which consists of ToyClosetNYC.com, an exclusive online adult novelty boutique that offers the latest in romance enhancement products, featuring all of the intimate additives you will need to set the mood, add some spice to your own sexual recipe, or to enhance your alone time and ToyClosetParties.com, the home-party plan to accompany the online boutique. Toy Closet Parties allows guests to taste, try, and feel products while demonstrated in a tasteful manner. Toys. They’re not just for kids and Janine will tell us why. After the interview, check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live.
