Believe in today, your life is now. There is a plaque with these words that I have had for years. Having read this book, these words take on a deeper meaning. According to spiritual teacher and author of The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle, living fully in the present is the key to happiness and enlightenment. But what does “living in the now” mean? If you have ever thought your life would improve when you got a raise, or won the lottery, or lost weight, then you’re not living in the NOW. Life is a journey, a series of “nows,” not the final and future destination. Tolle says “Nothing has happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now.” Human minds are conditioned to think in terms of past, present and future. We are preoccupied with past memory and future anticipation, rather than focusing on the now. The past forms our identity and what has led us to our current life circumstances. We focus on the future because this is where we believe our dreams and hopes will come to fruition – what we imagine to be our salvation, but actually a projection of the mind. We can never actually experience the past or the future. The past is gone, and in reality we experienced it as a sequence of “Nows.” Tolle writes, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” Please join me and Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera of Formula for Excellence for a discussion of The Power of Now. This New York Times bestseller has been translated into 33 languages, sold over 3 million copies, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential spiritual books of our time.
