Meet Ron DeCanio, motorcycle enthusiast, active member of the Jersey Shore Harley Owners Group and the Blue Knights. This Harley road warrior puts thousands of miles on his bike each year. He’s recently returned from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, SD. The town of Sturgis (pop. 6627 as of 2010 census) hosts one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the world, attracting a half million bikers. But this is only one of Ron’s annual bike destinations.
In 1908 Harley Davidson sold the first motorcycle for police use to the Detroit Police Department. In 1974, several law enforcement officers from the Bangor, Maine area got together and formed a local motorcycle club called the Blue Knights. The rest, as they say, is history. Today they have over 600 chapters in 29 countries.
In 1983, Harley Davidson began a unique idea -- Harley Owners Group (HOG). This group of Harley riders became the largest factory-sponsored motorcycle club in the world. Within 6 years, HOG membership exceeded 90,000, and by 2011, it has well over one million members with 1400 chapters worldwide.
Is everyone riding a motorcycle but me? And what about the mystique of the Harley? I’m curious to understand what it’s like to be part of the motorcycle culture, and Ron is going to share his experience with me. He’s been riding for a long time and he’s got some interesting tales to tell. He’s funny, too. You’ll definitely enjoy this show even if you don’t know anything about motorcycles. You might even decide you want a Harley of your own. After the show, please visit After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live!
