15 Minute Craft Website Tips

My name is Nicolette Tallmadge, I currently run my own hand crafted jewelry design business. I’ve been designing and selling jewelry for over 11 years. I got the idea about The Crafted Webmaster when I was working as a full time and freelance web designer. I created my first site in 1996 by learning HTML in a magazine and used that experience to get a job designing web sites for a living. While designing sites full time and on a freelance basis, I was also designing and selling my own handmade jewelry and used my web experience to promote myself online. During that time I helped many of my fellow artisans with setting up their own web sites and with advice on how to promote their business on the web. I now run my jewelry business full time and I’ve built The Crafted Webmaster so I can provide information to other fellow artists and craftsmen so they can learn how to promote their work on the Internet.

5 Ways to Use Your Art Website or Blog to Get More PR [Show Notes]

An appearance on TV or an article in the newspaper is a great way to bring more attention to your artwork. Your art website and/or blog can help you bring you and your work to the attention of reporters who would be interested in featuring YOU. In this episode, I will talk about 5 ways you can use your art website or blog as a public relations magnet.

    1. Add a press center to your blog or website

    • a online press center makes it easy for those who might want to interview you or write about you to find information
    • include things like a bio, artist statement, fact sheet, photos of your work, photos of • yourself, and photos of your studio
    • make sure you provide both low res (72 dpi) and high res photos (300 dpi and higher)

    2. Create an electronic press kit

    • a downloadable press kit makes it easier for reporters to download the information they need
    • put documents like bios and artist's statements in PDF format
    • put photos and other images in .jpg or .tif format
    • to make downloading easier, put everything into a zip file

    3. Put press releases on your website

    • you don't have to write press releases for only big events, use trends, current events, and seasonal events as a reason to write a press release
    • put your press releases in your press room and on your blog. Make sure that they are search engine friendly. If you're not familiar with what SEO is, you check out "How to Build Traffic to Your Art Website: SEO Secrets Revealed"

    4. Add useful information to your website

    • if your artwork as a cultural or a historical basis, or if it addresses current events of the day, create an information center on your website
    • include articles, audio, video, and photos in your information center
    • promote this center with your blog or through a press release

    5. Make your information easily "sharable"

    • don't lock down your information or your photos, make them easily sharable to bloggers, visitors, or others who are interested in your work
    • use services like AddThis or the Share This to put social networking buttons on your website or blog
    • encourage bloggers and visitors to share your information or to link to you
