15 Minute Craft Website Tips

My name is Nicolette Tallmadge, I currently run my own hand crafted jewelry design business. I’ve been designing and selling jewelry for over 11 years. I got the idea about The Crafted Webmaster when I was working as a full time and freelance web designer. I created my first site in 1996 by learning HTML in a magazine and used that experience to get a job designing web sites for a living. While designing sites full time and on a freelance basis, I was also designing and selling my own handmade jewelry and used my web experience to promote myself online. During that time I helped many of my fellow artisans with setting up their own web sites and with advice on how to promote their business on the web. I now run my jewelry business full time and I’ve built The Crafted Webmaster so I can provide information to other fellow artists and craftsmen so they can learn how to promote their work on the Internet.

How to Pick a Color Palette for Your Website [Show Notes]

One of the things that you need to consider when you're designing your art website is your color scheme. But choosing a scheme that looks good on the Internet is much different than choosing colors for your print brochure. And there are things that you need to consider technology-wise and on the marketing-wise as well as artistically before you commit to a color palette. Here are some tips on how to consider color on your website and how to choose the best color combinations for your website.

    1. Colors online don't work the same way as colors on print

    • Don't spend to much time trying to make your website colors match the colors in your catalog or brochure
    • Know that colors on your website will look different depending on the computer's operating system and the type of monitor being used
    • For consistency, use "web-safe" colors

    2. Make your color palette easy to view on the screen

    • Avoid large unbroken, blocks of intense colors like bright red, orange, yellow and bright pink
    • Avoid reversed text schemes like white text on black or other palettes that make your text hard to read
    • Make sure that you pick visually pleasing color palettes...get familiar with the color wheel

    3. Make sure that your color palette makes marketing sense

    • Pick a color scheme that matches the mood of your work and your "business" personality
    • Don't forget the psychological aspects of color (blue = stability and trust, green = nature)
    • Keep color trends in mind, but don't be completely ruled by them

    4. Get inspiration from other websites and resources

Colourlovers- for color patten and pattern ideas
Design Meltdown- for website design ideas and to see color palettes in action
Color Index - a great desktop reference for color combinations
