My name is Nicolette Tallmadge, I currently run my own hand crafted jewelry design business. I’ve been designing and selling jewelry for over 11 years. I got the idea about The Crafted Webmaster when I was working as a full time and freelance web designer. I created my first site in 1996 by learning HTML in a magazine and used that experience to get a job designing web sites for a living. While designing sites full time and on a freelance basis, I was also designing and selling my own handmade jewelry and used my web experience to promote myself online. During that time I helped many of my fellow artisans with setting up their own web sites and with advice on how to promote their business on the web. I now run my jewelry business full time and I’ve built The Crafted Webmaster so I can provide information to other fellow artists and craftsmen so they can learn how to promote their work on the Internet.

If you're building your own website for the first time, there are certain things that you want to avoid. There's often a fine line between a website that looks professional and well-designed and one that looks unprofessional and homemade. I'll discuss the web design mistakes you need to avoid when building your art website.
1. Bad color schemes
• Go easy on large areas of bright colors (red, yellow, orange) • Avoid backgrounds with "loud" or busy patterns • Use websites like Kuler or COLOURlovers to get color palette ideas
2. Text mistakes
• Be consistent with your fonts • Avoid with text on white backgrounds • Avoid low contrast text • Avoid text that's too small • Stick to standard web fonts (Arial, Courier,Georgia, Impact, Tahoma, Trebuchet, Helvetica, Verdana, Times New Roman, and Palatino)
3. Avoid "mystery meat" navigation
• Stick no more than 5 to 7 main categories • Be sure to label your categories appropriately • Be careful with drop down menu navigation
4. Stay away from splash screens and all Flash websites
• Most people hate splash screens and they are also bad for SEO • All Flash websites can also be bad for SEO • All Flash websites are also difficult to update
5. Lack of white space
• Don't feel that you have to cram everything on to a web page • The eye can't focus on a page that has too many items and too little white space • White space and padding between elements make your page easier to read
6. Other things to avoid
• Horizontal scrolling • Frames • Auto loading video or audio
