An industry where billions are spent each year, the results are still disappointing and lackluster. Many companies continue to lack diversity in all ranks and we have even seen a decline in diversity at the highest levels of organizations across all industries and sizes.   Vern Howard is the CEO at Hallo, a diversity recruiting platform that helps connect college students across the country with leading companies like Apple and Google. He joins us to discuss what is wrong with diversity in the workplace today, how companies can avoid diversity washing, and how they can start right now! We will also talk about diversity training and things you should stop doing and things you can start doing so your company is not just a check the box type of organization.  00:36:00New Yawk HRnobusiness,Human Resources, diversityToday We're calling BS on Diversity recruiting and today my guest is Vern Howard, CEO of Hallo, a diversity recruiting platformc8bbb822-0b13-4673-8615-bdd8e80673ef28fullCalling BS on Using Benchmarking in HR Decisionshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2020/08/18/calling-bs-on-using-benchmarking-in-hr-decisionsBusinesshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2020/08/18/calling-bs-on-using-benchmarking-in-hr-decisions/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2020/08/18/calling-bs-on-using-benchmarking-in-hr-decisionsTue, 18 Aug 2020 20:00:00 GMTCalling BS on Using Benchmarking in HR DecisionsKnee jerk benchmarking in HR systems and decisions has created a race towards the mediocre for most startups. Considering we're supposed to be the innovators there's an awful lot of cheating off of someone else's homework going on and most conclusions reached from a benchmarking exercise fail to remember that the information you're benchmarking against comes from a different set of circumstances, conditions and even just different human beings than the one in front of you. Plus just because it's normal doesn't make it smart or a good idea.  My hope is that HR leaders and company leaders, in general, are able to shift how they look out into the ecosystem from a benchmarking exercise to an inspirational exercise. But if you're going out to the world and asking it do define for you how you should run your own organization you're risking your success. Jonathan Basker has spent his career becoming an expert in how humans operate and cooperate inside of early-stage companies. His early career focused on cultivating talent and culture at companies like Etsy, Barkbox, Handy, InVision and betaworks where he was one of the first people to hold a Talent Partner-type role within the venture and developed the Hacker in Residence program - one of the original models for the VC studio ecosystem. He’s studied humans in myriad cultures; learning lessons along the way which are applicable to startups and individuals alike. These days he splits his time between supporting emerging leaders as an executive coach, supporting companies through organizational change and growth, and running around the hills and streams of the Catskills with a fly rod and a bow and arrow. He’s quite passionate about all 3 pursuits. 00:37:00New Yawk HRnobusiness,Human Resources,HR Technology,HR Happy Hour, peopleKnee jerk benchmarking in HR systems and decisions has created a race towards the mediocre for most startups.45b819b5-8ccf-41dc-940e-947239bd8b7b27fullCalling BS on Company Perkshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2020/07/15/calling-bs-on-company-perksBusinesshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2020/07/15/calling-bs-on-company-perks/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2020/07/15/calling-bs-on-company-perksWed, 15 Jul 2020 19:00:00 GMTCalling BS on Company PerksWe often say that culture is not free food or ping pong tables, but something that employees experience every day they work with your company. Since the proliferation of startup culture, perks have been perpetuated as a way for companies to attract talent. Free food, ping pong tables, and arcade machines are just some of the most popular ones. If you ever watched an episode of Silicon Valley on HBO, you’d see the comedic side of perks in full force.  Perks are not just ping pong, free snacks, and happy hours. In this episode, we called BS on Company Perks and are joined by Karen Weeks, VP of Ordergroove. Karen has a contrarian viewpoint on perks and believes that perks should represent your specific culture and values and ultimately should support and motivate your organization. We dive deeper into how your company can think differently about the perks you offer your team. Bio Karen D. We will talk in detail about the key elements required for creating successful WFH: investments in technology and in using what you have effectively, giving employees the freedom, trust, and job control that they should have had already, and actively ensuring that employees are not living an always-on lifestyle. The good news is that this is the phase we are now talking about, the bad news is that this phase may be the most complex for Human Resource leaders and teams. How do we maintain employee privacy when we need to know if someone is sick with Covid, could infect other team members, and trace them appropriately.  We tawk with Ciara Lakhani, the Chief People Officer at Dashlane about how companies can maintain employee privacy during the current Covid19 situation. Ciara, her team, and Dashlane have open-sourced some of their return to work thoughts, procedures, and ideas, so we are excited to chat with her.  Ciara currently serves as the Chief People Officer at Dashlane, an app out to fix the UX of the internet by filling out your passwords and payment information online. In fact, we are hitting record numbers of unemployment claims. It’s a VERY hard time for everyone. But, during these times, we should lead more with our hearts than with our employee manuals and HR processes.  Layoffs are happening via voicemails on a Sunday, without similar care, these same companies took to onboard these folks, and with zero empathy. Today, an estimated $4.8 billion is already donated annually through employee giving programs in North America, mostly through big companies. Big companies have embraced CSR but smaller companies have fallen behind on this trend. While only 20% of S&P 500 companies published CSR reports in 2011, this figure reached over 80% by 2016. But giving programs have a median participation rate of only 9%. Moreover, small and medium-sized businesses -- with 61% of the American workforce -- lack internal CSR teams to run effective programs. This represents an incredible amount of money, time, and goodwill “left on the table.”  Matt Amalfitano joins the show to help us call BS on the startup philanthropy programs. Matt is the CEO/Executive Director of RaisedBy.Us, a nonprofit workplace social good program. RaisedBy.Us provides workplace philanthropy programming -- employee volunteering, giving, and community events -- to high growth and next-generation employers like Casper, Squarespace, Shutterstock, and Bonobos. You walk into the CEO's office with an idea - I want to bring the entire organization together for one week and have everyone review each other. They are going to hate doing it, the systems will be fractured, it will cost millions in employee's time, and the result will reduce productivity. The CEO would likely kick you out of her office or fire you because it's a really bad idea. Yet, we've been doing this for decades and most companies continue the practice of performance evaluations and reviews today. We asked Janine Truitt to join us on the show to call bullshit on performance evaluations and reviews. As Janine says "the contributions of human beings deserve more than a once-a-year summary of highlights and flawed behaviors to describe what they contribute to a company. Like most things in HR, we look for ways to file and rank people like cattle because it makes creating one-size-fits-all strategies and programs easy. Paying attention to individual contributions and matching that with meaningful moments and recognition is what makes coming to work and sacrificing family, time, and energy worth it for many people, but we would rather prioritize a process over people." Janine is the Owner/Chief Innovations Officer for Talent Think Innovations, LLC, a business strategy and management consulting firm. Her career spans fourteen years in HR and Talent Acquisition that has taken her through the world of pharmaceuticals, healthcare, staffing, and R&D. It was that moment on LaToya sparked an interested in understanding the dynamics and behaviors between people in the workplace.  00:33:00New Yawk HRnodiversity,HRTech,Human Resources,Talent, recruitingWe call BS on diversity and inclusion practices that are really just diversity theater.22edd270-7b0c-45e8-8e2c-9a89dffe7edf15fullCalling BS on HR Metrics w/ Maya Carmeli (CEO, Co-Founder Cally)https://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2019/05/07/calling-bs-on-hr-metrics-w-maya-carmeli-ceo-co-founder-callyBusinesshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2019/05/07/calling-bs-on-hr-metrics-w-maya-carmeli-ceo-co-founder-cally/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2019/05/07/calling-bs-on-hr-metrics-w-maya-carmeli-ceo-co-founder-callyTue, 07 May 2019 18:00:00 GMTCalling BS on HR Metrics w/ Maya Carmeli (CEO, Co-Founder Cally)We all know that the first slide in all our HR/People reports is headcount. Headcount last month, a few months back, and the entire year last year. It's typically a bar graph, showing the ups and downs of your headcount. For the eager analyst, there may also be a trend line. With the help of Maya Carmeli, CEO and Co-Founder of Cally, we are calling BS on current HR metrics. While the HR world has become a bit more interested in metrics, it has become focused on the wrong metrics (or at least useless metrics). Maya calls them vanity metrics and questions the data collection methods that are providing no strategic value for decision making (she LOVES the headcount metric too!). Maya also wants to call BS on siloed HR departments where this data and knowledge about the company and its people are held up. It's time to democratize people metrics to the folks that make decisions every day, your leaders.  Maya is the CEO & Co-founder at Cally, software that gives voice to employees and helps managers be better leaders to their teams. Maya holds a Bachelors in HR and Labor Relations from Rutgers University and a Masters from Cornell’s ILR school. She has a background working in human resources and team consulting, specifically in large companies where she realized that traditional HR is broken. Maya was born in Brooklyn and was raised both in Tel-Aviv and the NY/NJ area. For fun, Maya likes to ski, read academic papers like a nerd, and drink excessive amounts of coffee (like a New Yawker). Find her on Twitter and LinkedIn.  00:32:00New Yawk HRnoHuman Resources,Talent,Human Resource Management,HR Metrics,MetricsWe call BS on HR/People vanity metrics & data collection methods that have no strategic value for decision making.a83394ff-6c84-4aa9-a991-234560042a2814fullCalling BS on Job Descriptions w/ Katrina Kibben CEO & Founder Three Ears Mediahttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2019/05/02/calling-bs-on-job-descriptions-w-katrina-kibben-ceo-founder-three-ears-mediaBusinesshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2019/05/02/calling-bs-on-job-descriptions-w-katrina-kibben-ceo-founder-three-ears-media/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/newyawkhr/2019/05/02/calling-bs-on-job-descriptions-w-katrina-kibben-ceo-founder-three-ears-mediaThu, 02 May 2019 15:15:59 GMTCalling BS on Job Descriptions w/ Katrina Kibben CEO & Founder Three Ears MediaOn today's show, we call BS on job descriptions with Katrin Kibben, CEO and Founder of Three Ears Media.  Katrina Kibben is the Founder and CEO of Three Ears Media, a firm dedicated to teaching recruiters how to be better writers.
