Dr. Jabari Mahiri, whose decades of work and research have focused on educational equity, has been named the inaugural holder of the William and Mary Jane Brinton Family Chair in Urban Teaching.

Mahiri is Professor in the Graduate School of Education. He also serves as the Faculty Director for the Bay Area Writing Project, a member of the College Writing Program's Advisory Board, a founding member and Chair of the Board for REALM Charter School, a Senior Scholar for the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education, and he has been a Visiting Professor at Harvard.

He is author of:

  • Digital Tools in Urban Schools: Mediating a Remix of Learning (2011);
  • Out of Bounds: When Scholarship Athletes become Academic Scholars (2010) with Derek Van Rheenen; and,
  • Shooting for Excellence: African American and Youth Culture in New Century Schools (1998).

He also is editor of:

  • What They Don't Learn in School: Literacy in the Lives of Urban Youth (2004), and
  • Urban Teachers Research Their First Year of Practice (2014) with Sarah Freedman.
