Some even believe that highly organized Native governments such as these were the model the founding fathers looked to when creating what is today the United States government, with separation of powers and an emphasis on representation from each village and tribe. Listen as some of the details are discussed by downloading the audio file Then, Cliff and Brandon talk holidays in a segment recorded shortly after the new year in 2016 in which we discuss different calendars used by various countries for holidays, favorite traditions, and some of the BEST countries and people to spend time with. They do this through computer & job skill training to impoverished Native Americans all over the United States. This education is meant to give those in need a foothold they need to reach their aspirations and build up the Native American community one step at a time. They target those specifically who are considered "at-risk" due to their socio-economic status.  Lack of skills means lack of money and this forces hard choices to be made.  Pay for food or starve; pay for a home or be evicted/homeless; pay for bills or live without electricity or water. Download and listen to the audio file, and then visit sagehawk.org to donate and discover how YOU can help improve the lives in your community.  00:46:00Native Talk Radio Podcastnosagehawk foundation,sagehawk.org,Jeff Gilchrist, native american job skills, native american talk radioJeff from SageHawk Foundation Helping Natives Build Job Skills And ConfidencePlains Daily Life & War of Northern Aggressionhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2019/01/13/plains-daily-life-war-of-northern-aggressionPoliticshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2019/01/13/plains-daily-life-war-of-northern-aggression/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2019/01/13/plains-daily-life-war-of-northern-aggressionSun, 13 Jan 2019 17:00:00 GMTPlains Daily Life & War of Northern AggressionOn today's nativetalk.net, we discussthe Sioux daily life and compare it to Brandon's. Then with the superbowl just around the corner, we dig into the past all the way back to 2016 before we did the NativeTalk.net podcast, and share a classic segment of the superbowl by the numbers - and give you the chance to see how much worse we used to be at broadcasting. I had WAY more planned for this week's show than what we got to.  but hey, good news right? I dont have to prepare for next week's show! Because BRANDON couldn't let a simple stupid comment lie. So, the majority of this week's episode is unexpectedly about Elizabeth Warren's Native American claims and her subseqeunt DNA test release. Honerstly, i wish id been more preparted to talk about it, but silly me i thought it was ginna be a 30 second converation. Some actually stayed back and farmed, and built permanant structures. We talk about what they farmed, how they built their homes, and about some of the festivals they had.  Then we discuss the dismal graduation rate in North Dakota (65%), especially when compared to their white counterparts which is 23% higher. We discuss this and some of the changes the N.D. school system is adopting to address the situation. A year later, it does seem as though things are improving. Finally, Chris wrote in in response to the last live show we did to call CLiff out on his views in regard to white privilege, and seeks to explain what it is, and why it is a thing. As some of you may know, the horse is not a native animal to the American continent. This meant the Plains Indians way of life did not include use of this animal. However, the Spaniards did bring horses with them, and some of them escaped. This changed things dramatically, from the way they hunted, to the way they traveled, and even their homes. We talk about that here today. Download the audio file and listen to the whole show right now.  Then we discuss air travel, and recount a few terrible experiences we have had along with a great news story of travel gone bad. Then we go into the health pile, including some alzheimers news and a stupid recurring joke that always makes me laugh for some reason. Hopefully you enjoy that! And we'll be back next week with a whole new show and your emails in response to last week's podcast about Nancy's letter and why she hates our program. Well, a woman named Nancy took us up on that, and wrote in to tell us how much she hates our show. The best part is, according to the letter she actually liked us until she visited our website and saw our pictures (apparently we appear too white for her liking).  We provide a forum on this show, and literally anyone with a comment or opinion - whether we agree with you or not - is welcome to voice it. That doesn't mean we aren't going to respond, but it does mean that all opinions are welcome. So, download the audio file and listen to Nancy's letter accusing us of racism based on our appearance alone, and enjoy the ensuing discussion! This theme continues with the story "The Big Mouthed Baby" and we finish with a classic "Raven & The Whale" animal story where the raven is a total con artist who tricks the villagers out of their winter food. I don't think they much liked fast talking out-of-towners back then.  In the second segment Cliff is joined by Brandon, our sister Brittany, and our mother Vickie as we discuss some interesting Yupik facts & how they used to live. We also go into the education system in general and all share various thoughts on the subject. Overall, a very good and entertaining discussion, which you can hear right now by downloading the audio file or playing it through your favorite podcasting app. Then, Cliff discusses his recent trip to Kwethluk Alaska where he had a meeting with the tribal council of the Organized Village of Kwethluk, as well as other unrelated experiences up there. Does limiting or enacting tougher gun laws really reduce violence and crime? If not, why? What is happening in countries where guns have been essentially banned? Then in the second segment we stick with guns, but this time turn to self- violence, which is to say suicide. Why does it happen, and can anything be done to stop THAT? Surely few things could be sadder than someone's private torture leading them to believe that ending their own life is the only solution. Often family members don't even see the signs of it coming, and it seems to hit out of the blue. Mental health is an issue that affects every American, and particularly Native Americans. Natives living with a mental health condition numbers at 28% vs other nationalities which range from 16-18%.  In addition we know that 1 of 5 Americans in total experience a mental issue in any given year, a full quarter of homeless folks live with mental illness. Knowing this, it is clear it is something which needs to be addressed far more than it currently is. We have been talking on this very program in the last few weeks how having a strong purpose in life, setting goals & being future oriented helps you make decisions today to help tomorrows dreams become a reality (visit nativetalk.net to download recent shows to hear those discussions with 6 year old Jason). This is why it so wonderful to get an experts opinion on these and many other subjects such as substance abuse and depression. Danelle helps us understand and overcome the stigma of mental issues. Anyone out there suffering from any troubles of course can always email the show podcast@nativetalk.net and we will direct you to the resources you need to get help. In the second segment Danelle & Cliff discuss the huge new loneliness study released by Cigna, which reveals that Americans in epidemic numbers are lonelier than they have ever been in history. Nearly half of all people report sometimes or always feeling alone or left out, and a quarter say they rarely or never feel as though there are people who understand them. An incredibly interesting show, which you should download and listen to right now. Then we dive into the new Trump administration idea of reclassifying Native Americans as a 'race' rather than sovereign tribal citizens for the purposes of Medicaid. This would allow states with rules requiring 20 – 80 hours of work in order to be eligible for Medicaid to apply to Natives as well. We oppose this idea. Then, in an effort to help those who may be struggling in life and who feel they don’t have the tools to succeed in their lives, we go over a few ways to clarify your values. Life is lived from the inside out, and to be successful you must know who you are, what you believe, and what you stand for. The very core of your personality are your values, which determine your beliefs, which shape your expectations, dictate your attitude, and in turn control your actions. There are some striking differences, and it all boils down to how they were raised. In the past, researchers used a one-size-fits-all test that did not accurately take into account the cultural differences and the results made it seem like the Native americans and other minorities were poor subjects for research. In reality (of course) they just needed a test that was altered to fit their worldview. We hope this trend continues and more research is tailored to the individuals being looked at! Download and listen to the entire audio file for all the details. In the second segment, Jason and I talk about the number one key to success in life. As my son, we often discuss subjects such as these in order that he might understand how to properly prepare for life as he grows older. Today the lesson is staying off drugs by ensuring you have a strong purpose in life, which is achieved through goal setting and being future oriented. We continue with a new study on how not sleeping enough is worse for your health than ever previously thought, and finish the first segment with the ancient Pacfic Northwest Indians hunting whales from canoes. It took several days to take down a whale, but when it was finished the hunt provided tribal resources in abundance for long periods of time.  Then in the second segment, a Mascoma Savings Bank in Vermont has had the same logo for nearly 60 years. It depicts the Native Chief Mascommah of the Squakheag tribe spear fishing from a small canoe. The logo is derived from a large 22 foot painting the bank commissioned of the Chief, which still hangs in their corporate offices today. The question is, where is the line drawn between honoring historical figures, and simply using them? Is it wrong for the bank to have used this logo throughout the years, and are they doing the right thing by changing it? If a man wanted to marry, he paid the bride's father a set amount. Then, after their first child was born he was attributed to the wife's clan & the clan would then pay for the child the same amount the husband paid for his wife. This would annul the marriage & she had the choice to stay with her husband or leave as she chose. Then we discuss a case of a native kid up in Canada who was experiencing bullying from his classmates over his long hair. They did not understand in Native cultures the significance or importance hair has in many tribes. In order to stop the bullying, he was forced to cut his hair. I can tell you I wouldn't. However, right now there are Oglala Sioux families in desperate need of help in South Dakota just trying to survive. They need some of the most basic items, and they've been asking for help. You can see the list of families and the simple things they need at okini.net. This is the main topic we discuss this week on the NativeTalk.net radio podcast, where Cliff and Brandon lay out the specific conditions folks are experiencing up on the Pine Ridge reservation, leading to some of the highest suicide rates in the country. We hope you'll listen to the show and download the audio file to join in the discussion.  Of course, we can't START the show on such a down note, so we begin with a list of the highest paying professions, including 'mathematician'. I can’t figure how doing pure math is worth quite so much, but Brandon tries to explain (and fails). However, that will soon be changing as the U.S. Senate has just sent a bill to the president which would recognize 6 Virginia tribes enabling them to compete for educational funding, repatriate the remains of their ancestors and bring them back home, as well as provide much needed access to health care for elder tribal members. Today on the NativeTalk.net radio podcast, we discuss this wonderful story, and acknowledge it as an issue of respect in honor of these tribes which are alive and well - surviving and thriving as a rich part of our Native heritage. We hope you feel the same way, and we hope you enjoy listening to the discussion by downloading the full audio file for all the story details. To help us discuss, as a first grade sudent himself 6 year old Puyallup tribal member Jason joins to learn things about his tribe he (and maybe you) never knew before.  One of the most important aspects of tribal life in the Puget Sound region, was the potlatch. It's important to be healthy, right? Yet so many are doing it so, so wrong. We go over how tropical fruits like mangos can help, and a new study says skipping meals won't. It also seems that too much caffiene (coffee) can actually get you drunk, and we also try to help you find love online.  In the second segment we start with charity, and specifically taking part in one of those "Polar Plunges" to raise money for good causes, and tips on doing it right. Cliff also takes the opportunity to tell one of his stories from Russia, when he experienced the classic russian Banya while in Siberia. There, the fun stuff ends and Cliff responds to an email from Chris in Tempe Arizona who asks his opinion on the new tax plan currently working its way through congress. You might not swing from the chandeliers with this topic, but it's still something you need to know about. Then we discuss the fact that thankgiving is celebrated by eating... TURKEYS! (gasp!). While it is true that both turkeys and chickens are treated poorly, and that absolutely needs to change, advocates suggesting animals be treated as people and that we should all go vegetarian are just as wrong. However, in Yellville Arkasas, where live turkeys are hurled out of open airplane windows and thrown off buildings could be in the wrong as well. Then in the second segment, we discuss common myths such as the idea that there is any single 'native american culture', 'Indians get a free ride from the government', 'They sold Manhattan for $24 worth of beads!' and 'Mascots honor Native Americans!'. Then in the second segment we discuss discrimination against American Indians, which is always more prevalent and problematic in areas with a greater concentration of Natives.  The children going to Massena high school in New York state have a plan to combat this however; they have started a club for members of their tribe to come together and talk about issues affecting them, as well as a sort of planning commitee on how they can affect change in the general school population and help to dispell hurtful stereotypes and assert themselves as individuals. We also read a few listener mail letters, one from Paul, a Chippewa in Texas, and a woman not happy with Elizabeth Warren's Cherokee heritage claim weighs in with her comments as well.  In the second segment Jason and I discuss how the Black Bear Casino Resort is celebrating Native American Heritage month, and we get a six year old's opinion of the Carlisle Indian School as we discuss a 59 tribe effort to bring the long interred remains of children who passed while attending (typically due to diseases such as tuberculosis or consumption) and have them transported back to their homelands where they belong.  In all, this should prove an incredibly enjoyable show as I don't typically allow six year olds to join, but he begged me and i thought it might be fun, which it was. Then Matthew from Tempe Arizona calls in to our message line at 970-278-5791 to let he know he enjoys the show and corrects us on our pronunciation of the Illini of Illinois and their University mascot. As a former Illinois resident, he is much better equipped to pronounce the words correctly! We play his message, and read the letter he sent which weighs in on the redskin sq**w word controversy. You can download and listen to the whole show by downloading the audio file directly here In the second segment, we kick off Native American Heritage Month with Donald Trump referring (again) to Senator Elizabeth Warren as 'Pocahontas'. He does so, referencing her incorrect claim as being decended from the Cherokee Indian tribe. When the Cherokee demanded proof or some kind of documentation which she was unable to provide, Trump at the time began referring to her as 'Pocahontas' in order to highlight the fact that she was anything but. In recent years, many Native tribes have found a measure of prosperity in casinos and hotels. However, some tribes missed out and were unable to capitalize on that industry for a variety of reasons. Often, their location was a factor and being far from population centers made casino profits difficult to realize. Now there is a new industry popping up, the Marijuana production, distribution, and sale. Many tribes are jumping headfirst into Marijuana, determined not to again miss out on what could be the next big thing for tribal prosperity.  Then, we discuss the Cleveland Indians and Chief Wahoo. They have had many protestors over the caricaturized mascot over the years, but when one of the protest leaders is arrested for defrauding the very people he claims to represent, it can hurt your cause considerably. Finally, we discuss the New World tapestry which was hand woven by the British royals, and while it professes to show the history of the ‘New World’ (America), it also shows dozens upon dozens of incredibly stereotypes and incorrect depictions of Tribal Natives. Of course, the royal family is standing by their creation. This week: Fall is Here & Homeless Natives in Tiny Homes. Yes, Fall is here, but what exactly is it that causes those leaves to change colors and fall off the trees? A new study from SUNY college in New York have figured out the exact process. Then we get into the problem of homeless folks in general. Download the full show by clicking the link and get the audio file directly here. When it comes to homeless, it seems everyone wants to help them and be a part of solving the problem, but ONLY if it doesn’t occur in THEIR neighborhoods. Kitsap County in Washington state has recently made permanent what was a temporary ordinance allowing homeless encampments on religious property and other non profit lands. Unfortunately, no one has actually built any, and no progress has been made. So what about tiny homes situated in a 'tiny village'? This is what residents of Port Orchard are against, who are faced with the reality of having homeless neighbors.  Fortunately, the nearby Suquamish tribe is moving forward as the torch bearer housing homeless from their own tribe, essentially bringing them home and teaching them what they need to be productive in society. Our sensitivity bar is set pretty high, and it takes an awful lot to offend us. So today on the NativeTalk.net radio podcast, we present part 2 (of 2) of what we're calling "Angry Indians". Is it justified? or is it Political Correctness gone mad? And what does it say with many of these stories when, indeed, even WE are offended? This fellow then shows up at all the sports games in full "Indian" war regalia and leads the student section in whooping it up all throughout the game. In a similar story, the University of Illinois has long had a tradition of playing a Native American inspired war song as they march under a giant Native American looking balloon. Both schools have just this year suspended the practice. Did they make the right decision? Finally, a Utah Native is making moves to have the local Utah Squaw Peak name changed. He is making a larger argument that the word itself should be banned from our lexicon. What does the word mean? Is it really a derogatory word? If you believe as I do, this is a fantastic opportunity for tribes to showcase their culture, come together in fellowship, and have a lot of fun too! I am a strong believer in tribes maintaining a strong cultural presence. Not long ago, I advocated for the creation of a program in which poor, homeless, or otherwise disadvantaged tribal members to have the opportunity to come home to their respective reservations and re-learn the ways of their ancestors. We're talking a voluntary program for folks who are literally sleeping in the gutter lost in a world of substance abuse with no direction or purpose in their lives. If a group of plains indian learned to build teepees and hunt local game, or Pacific NW Natives learned to build longhouses and started living their daily lives as our ancestors did, whats the problem with that idea? I argued that it would be preserving culture in a living way, and help lost tribal members find a purpose and gain some self respect. My co-host disagrees with me believing the idea to be advocating some sort of 'Native Disneyland', all of which we discuss on today's NativeTalk.net radio podcast. Judge for yourself: listen and download the full audio file and feel free to comment with your opinions. I find the purpose of Pow Wows to have a similar goal. Just north of Pensacola Florida, work has already begun on a Native American cultural center which will feature invaluable artifacts and a place for education and cultural preservation. Those against the display or exploitation of the old native ways must surely be preparing protests! I on the other hand support ALL efforts to hold up American Indian culture. I hope you agree, and hope you will enjoy listening to our radio program and feel free to share the show with your friends! Loss of privileges? Definitely. Spankings? Maybe. How about dealing with your unruly child with a taser? They are fighting to find success, in whatever success means to them personally. For a lot of people though, their prospects look pretty bleak. We who have been through it before know that the best opportunities lie just around the corner, if we can only find the strength within ourselves to stand up, be strong, and push forward with the determination needed to find the success that we seek for ourselves. That is why today I want to share a story with you, of a man (you’ve never heard of) who started with nothing and became one of the most prominent Americans in history. Then, in the 80’s his family found themselves on the brink of ruin. This time it was his son who stood up to take control and pull them back from sure financial ruin. These are people who know what it is to fight and to win in the face of absolute uncertainty. Strength of character is key, and that is never more true than when you have no business having any confidence at all. This man was at the heart of a controversy a few years ago, and I wrote him a letter. One of America’s richest men took the time to write me back. On today’s show we tell his story, and the story of his family. I read the letter he wrote me, and I try to explain why I find inspiration in his journey. I hope you find some too. No, that is not a joke although it sure does sound like one.  Then we get to listener mail, where we have several letters written in from listeners reacting to past shows. We discover how comparing the US government to Adolf Hitler era Germany is more accurate than you might think, a comment on the state of reservation police, and a letter from Tiffani who finds herself in fear of the police. We discuss several topics related to the police and whether or not citizen's general fear of them is justified. Then, Tiffani shares the search for her roots she has been struggling to find. A Honduran born in California with roots to Native peoples in her past, she is nevertheless not a member of a federally recognized tribe. She struggles to connect to her heritage and often isn't sure how to do that. After all, if you aren't officially a member of a tribe, and don't even know where you come from, is it right to pursue the Native Indian culture?  We discuss this and more on today's Nativetalk.net radio program. Download the audio file directly here, and we hope you'll be back to listen to next week's show with more stimulating Native Talk Radio! 00:47:00Native Talk Radio Podcastnolistener mail,nativetalk.net,native american talk radio, fear of police, searching for heritageFear of Police & Seeking Your HeritagePolice Killing Innocents & Holidays Natives Hatehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2017/08/06/police-killing-innocents-holidays-natives-hatePoliticshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2017/08/06/police-killing-innocents-holidays-natives-hate/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2017/08/06/police-killing-innocents-holidays-natives-hateSun, 06 Aug 2017 15:30:00 GMTPolice Killing Innocents & Holidays Natives HatePolice are here to protect us, the citizens of whichever municipality you reside in. I have always been a strong supporter of law enforcement, and when mistakes get made I more often than not give the police the benefit of the doubt. However, it seems more and more often their mistakes are deadly for the very folks they are there to protect. Today on the NativeTalk.net radio program Cliff starts by telling the story of the time in High School he was arrested and interrogated for a number of hours for the heinous crime of eating strawberries (that is not even a joke). Then, we read a recent news story which resulted in the death of an innocent man because the police raided the wrong house entirely. Listen to the full show by downloading our audio file. Then in the second segment, we have a lot of holidays in this country. Columbus day, 4th of july, thanksgiving... but what do Native Americans think about these days? We discuss several holidays, what they stand for, and how various Indian tribal members feel about those days. Then, we do a story of a terrible breakup. Who hasn't experienced that, right? It might be a good idea to hide your incredibly valuable items beforehand though! Listen to the full show by downloading the audio file directly here In the second segment we talk about Mark Zuckerburg who recently visited the Blackfoot Indian Reservation. We discuss his trip, and some of the things he said. He believes the federal government has forced Indian nations to adopt a governmental structure which he believes invites corruption, which was in fact the goal of the US government in an effort to hamstring Indians and keep them from becoming too powerful or prosperous. According to Zuckerburg, all the good things that have allowed to happen, have only been things the US Government ultimately controls, while true ecomomic prosperity has been purposefully witheld. What happens when their power is challenged by the people who are sick and tired of watching their leaders do whatever they want? Well, if you're the Nooksack Tribal Council of the Pacific NW, you identify an ancestor of the opposition group, and declare their heritage invalid resulting in a mass disenrollment of over 300 legitimate members. Then, when Tribal Council elections roll around and folks are not allowed to vote, it opens the door for the BIA to step in and declare your government invalid and strip you of your federal recognition.  The point is, greed and attempts to hold on to power at all costs hurts everyone. We talk about this and more on this edition of the NativeTalk.net radio program, which you can download the full audio file for here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2017/07/02/tribal-connections-nooksack-disenrollment-climate-change.mp3 We also discuss bringing members home to the reservation, helping them connect with their heritage, and teaching the old Indian ways. We finish with a discussion of climate change, and how scientists are using Native Indian records to help match up to european records and get a better idea of how our climate has been behaving throughout the globe and farther back than they previously thought possible. Recently a Native homeless man in South Dakota was found dead, frozen to death in a park after having been turned away from the local shelter for being drunk. Other Native women have reported being raped, called names, and had things thrown at them. This is our subject this week on the NativeTalk.net radio podcast, which you can download and listen to the full audio file here.  The major question, is what to do about it? Is more funding the answer? or perhaps should their tribes call them home? Reservations, as we all know, are often poor and lack adequate services. What if you didn't need any services though? What if they could be taught the skills needed to survive in the old ways, To hunt, gather, build shelters, and fellowship with their own community. The Indian Schools taught them their ways were wrong, taught them to rely on the Government. But now, when they need the government, it is failing them. In our opinions, it is the responsibility of the Tribal leadership on these reservations to re-teach the old ways.  Comments and critisicm is always welcome by emailing podcast@nativetalk.net.  Also, in our first segment we talk about a new law in California that would ban lawyers from having sex with their clients. The lawyers are not happy about this proposal at ALL. Do they exist to serve us? Or do they exist to further their own interests? And when they choose the latter, what do we as the membership do to halt the wrongs we see? There has been a lot of talk about the "Native Way" in dealing with this type of thing, and part of it I understand. Although, is it possible to go too far on the other side, to the point where you ignore and enable the corruption to continue? If you are like me, a Native who has lived off the reservation for his entire life, does my opinion count? Or simply because I am not immerssed in the community I must keep my mouth shut when I see wrongs that damage our Native communities? Do we not all have an obligation to speak out? These are the questions discussed on this NativeTalk.net radio podcast. After you listen to the conversation, comment on Facebook, or write an email to podcast@nativetalk.net. Fortunately, these widespread practices were eventually halted, but this did not stop the march of self-assimilation on a more natural level. However, one the forced practices stopped, most of America seemed to forget Natives even existed. In the middle part of the 20th century, Natives were all but invisible. Horace Poolaw, a Kiowa Native was an avid photographer, and captured many images of his people as they went through this period of time, and his work is now on display in Washington DC. In our second segment, the question has always been out there, as to whether or not Natives really were the first peoples, and what truth lay behind traditional Native legends. DNA testing has been done on several of the oldest human remains in existence, and compared to Natives still here today. We discuss the surprising results & invite your comments. He plans to cut funding and personnel to a number of departments, and it certainly appears the BIA is one of them. Many are concerned about what this means for Indian country, and how it will affect them. Specifically, former Puyallup tribal council candidate Anna bean wrote a post which I completely agree with; that if a bill or policy threatens Native sovereignty or oppresses our people, we must stand up to the threat. We must read and become better informed. We have a duty to ourselves and our community to prepare against those who would do us harm.  However, it is my contention that a weakened BIA could present as a possible opportunity. Given the right opportunity, and done the right way, the opening exists to make a bid for more power for our people, and to actually strengthen Tribal sovereignty. This is our topic of discussion on today's NativeTalk.net radio podcast. Listen to the full conversation by downloading the audio file, and let us know your opinion! I have long wanted Natives in Congress & Native American lobby groups. Turns out, we have a long history of both. The NCAI was created in 1944, and many Natives have served in congress over the years.  Also on today's radio program, which you can download the audio file for here, we welcome a Chippewa Native named Ron with many new interesting perspectives on the NCAI.  We then discuss a health pile, with new information on how Marijuana and Alzheimer’s might be linked, as well as top noises that wake up men & women differently. For example, crying babies wake up women, while most men have the ability to sleep through it.  Last, many states here in the west lack the business centers and industrial infrastructure to rely on them for revenue, and instead turn to tourism. Particularly in Montana just north of Yellowstone National Park. Of course, the natives in the area are left out of these tourism dollars, at least until now. A new partnership with the Montana legislature could pave the way for Native Reservations to draw tourists in their own right. The blackfeet indians in particular believed in the reals of existance, land, sky, and water. Water was especially sacred to them, and the animal figures that featured prominently in their stories (such as the beaver) taught them important lessons on how to live in harmony with the world around them, and is even the basis for their most important religious ceremony. This is important for those of us who may not necessarily have a visceral reaction against pipelines to understand, because it makes the point that these protests go beyond any individual issue, and makes it clear that this is instead a deeply ingrained philosophy on existence which stetches back millenia.  In the second segment we talk about a Native American program assisting Natives who need a will, but otherwise cannot create one. Many needing help do not know English, or know it very poorly, and without a translator would not have the capability of creating what we believe is an absolutely essential document. We also direct folks to legalzoom.com where (as long as you know English) you can cheaply and easily create legal documents ready to file for insanely cheap prices. Have you ever called in sick to work... when you're really not even sick. CareerBuilder.com just published a survey of 2500 HR managers who report some of the absolute worst excuses ever given by employees. things like "Can't get to work boss, the Ozone in the atmosphere flattened my tires", "I've been bitten by a duck!" among many others. Then we talk about tattoo statistics, which shows 20% of all americans are now sporting a tattoo, with folks in the 30-39 age range as the number one age group sporting inked skin at 38%.  In segment 2 we discuss the slogan "water is life". This has become a very popular protest slogan among all natives, especially as of late. This slogan goes deeper than just a protest however, as we discuss the some of the history behind the fight for water going back as far as the American expansion west. In the midwest specifically, there are not that many water sources and it was rightly concluded that whoever controlled the water, controlled virtually everything. One geologist even suggested abandoning the tradional rectangular land division methods and divide land based on water features, ensuring equal water access for all. Bottom line, water has been sacred to the plains indians for millenia, and goes far beyond any particular protest. In next week's part 2 of this show we go into the origins of Native beliefs on water, and discuss why creating a will is so important, regardless of how much wealth you have. Native Americans, like many minorities face stiff sterotypes that can lead landlords to implement unfair and potentially illegal restrictions on renters based upon race and what they imagine could be a future problem. I have no doubt that landlords are not breaking the law out of hatred (most anyway), rather they want to ensure they rent to people who will respect and take care of their property. The problem comes when you allow a negative racial stereotype to dictate your decision to marginalize an entire race of people. The key is to make sure your restrictions and guidelines for renters apply to everyone, without race being one of those factors. Listen to this story and get all the details by downloading the audio file and checkng out the entire show! To drive the point home, Cliff shares a few stories from his own experience in getting his first real job while facing age & experience discrimination - no one wants to hire the kid with zero work history. Cliff shares some of the ways he overcame that discrimination, and discusses how that lesson can be applied to other parts of life. Because remember, discrimination may not be fair, but to simply give up and accept it is just as bad. Changing the situation is not only on the shoulders of those commiting the error, but also on us to overcome and change people's minds as well.  In the second segment, Cliff goes into some of the challenges surrounding Natives poor eating habits, and talks about a new movement to change that for the better. Thank you for listening to more stimulating Native Talk Radio with Cliff & Brandon. This week we read listener mail comments which came in from various native members of different tribes. Thank you to Anthony for your two cents, who gives us historical context for how and why bood quantums came into being in the first place. Nicole asks who gives anyone the right to determine who is and who is not Native enough, Sarah who was smuggled out of the US and into the Middle East and had to fight her way back into the tribe shares her story and her opinion, while Dan doesn't believe we should disenroll anyone. He says we need every whitey willing to take a stand with the 'real' natives. Thank you all for your letters and comments! Email us directly podcast@nativetalk.net if you wish to opine. As all offical tribes are sovereign, they have final say over the basic requirements necessary to become an enrolled member. One of the key thresholds tribes impose, is that of a blood quantum limit. After all, once a membership has become diluted to a certain point members have such a small amount of Native blood they are considered my many to no longer be native - what listener JT describes as being a "one drop". Other tribes require only a provable lineage.  If a tribe imposes a blood quantum limit they did not have before, what to do with members who no longer meet the threshold? Should they be disenrolled? Or should there be a 'grandfather' clause and the change only be made moving forward?  This is a tough debate, but we do our best discussing a complicated issue. Download and listen to today's audio file and we welcome your thoughts on this topic!  In a related topic, we discuss the minimum viable population to ensure healthy genetic diversity, a major issue for tribes wishing to consider the idea of a blood quantum limit. There is a fine line between encouaging folks to marry other Natives, and risking unhealthy genetics within communities too small to handle it. And in Iceland there is an Android app which allows you to "Bump phones before you bump in bed". With a population of only 320,000 Iclanders face the very real risk of ending up in bed with a close relative. Like all small communities (Natives included) geneology is carefully documented. An interesting reality for communities faced with procreation among very small groups! We do hope you'll join us for this discussion by downloading today's audio file. For that reason, we feel MLK Day is one to be celebrated. Therefore we bring you today the quiz "Know Your King", a game where we test Brandon's knowledge of pop culture references with "King" in the answer. We then go into a number of interesting facts about this great holiday, such as the petition that made in a national hiliday was delivered to Congress in 1970 with a total of six million names on it. This is not nearly as bad. Listen to our discussion on this issue right here by downloading the audio file. Then we compare Obama's record on Native American issues, to a new proposal that President Donald Trump & his team of advisors seem to be pushing. I am not a fan of Obama, and in fact I think he has made a great number of mistakes. However, as I have looked into his actions regarding Indian Country, I could find no fault with him. On this show we detail many of his achievements - one we talked about not long ago on this very radio program (the Bear's Ears area in Utah, which we felt was a massive land grab. We support fully the declaration of this area as a national monument). Then we speak on Donald Trump and his advisers pushing legislation that would privatize reservation, and cut through a lot of the red tape preventing Tribal Nations from using their land as they would like to without jumping through far more legal hoops than anyone else is required to do. While we definitely support easing the bureaucratic burden on tribes, we are strongly against anything that threatens Native Sovereignty. Is that what this legislation proposes? Listen to today's discussion for the full story.  Thank you for listening! As the host of the Puyallup Native Radio Program, I write all the descriptions to let you know what the show will be about before you listen. A lot of times I do a bunch of show prep, in order to bring you a compelling topic that hopefully makes you think and consider a point of view you have never heard before. For this show, I did no preparation at all. That is because I spent the entire week between the last show and this one in Tacoma near the Puyallup reservation. I wasn’t there for fun though, I was actively engaged in diving classes every day in order to get a certification in Surface Supplied Air diving. I had a fantastic time, and have to say that diving turned out to be even MORE fun than I was anticipating it to be. You can listen to us talk about diving and the trip to Washington in detail by downloading the audio file directly right here. Then, in the second segment Leah who (we think) lives somewhere in Washington emailed in with a very long and interesting email on the myth of thanksgiving. Everyone’s opinion deserves to be heard, so we read those messages here on the show. Today we have comments from Dean, Susan, Bunjosh, and Sarah. Then, since I am traveling by plane to Tacoma myself this week, we do a travel pile, including stories from a woman who departed the plane via the emergency exit and jumping off the wing before the plane had even made it to the gate. We have travel facts about how people behave on plane trips, and how often people fly. And, as the DAPL Pipeline protests are still ongoing, Natives there have notices a rather odd trend. The reports of protester violence and verbal abuse toward the police does seem to be true, but it doesn’t appear to be perpetrated by Natives. It seems white people – hippies to be specific, have been moving in and co-opting the camp and making it their own. They have no regard for following established rules, including eating all the food but not helping to clean anything up. They are bringing drums, guitars, smoking a lot of weed, and essentially seem to be converting the protest into a music festival. True water protectors have overheard many of them openly comparing DAPL to Burning Man and the Rainbow Gathering. Natives do hope that the cold weather and harsh South Dakota winter will drive the riff raff out, leaving only the truly committed behind. Bottom line, Hippies suck.  00:36:00Native Talk Radio PodcastnoPuyallup Podcast,DAPL hippies, listener mail, travel pileListener Mail, Travel Pile, & DAPL HippiesRemembering The Sand Creek Massacre, Who Won the Election? &Dakota Access Updatehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2016/11/27/remembering-the-sand-creek-massacre-who-won-the-election-dakota-access-updatePoliticshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2016/11/27/remembering-the-sand-creek-massacre-who-won-the-election-dakota-access-update/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/nativetalk/2016/11/27/remembering-the-sand-creek-massacre-who-won-the-election-dakota-access-updateSun, 27 Nov 2016 20:07:34 GMTRemembering The Sand Creek Massacre, Who Won the Election? &Dakota Access UpdateWho won the Presidential Election and will take over as the 45th president? That might seem like a silly question, but Georgia resident Joe Chandler still has no idea and plans to keep it that way. Following this thrilling news story, we go straight into remembering the Sand Creek Massacre which occurred on November 29th, 152 years ago.  Learn about the history and events leading up to the 1864 Massacre at Sand Creek, including the two men who opposed the Colonel in charge of the military troops responsible for killing between 200-300 unarmed Natives, 2/3 of which were women and children. The native encampment was attempting to negotiate a truce after a recent treaty signing had reduced their reservation to 7.7% of its previous size. Colonel Chivington however, had other ideas. He looked down upon the peaceful camp and saw a victory ripe for the picking. That is when two army officers, Captain Silas Soule & Lt. Joseph Cramer expressed some serious concerns about what Chivington was planning to do. Lt Cramer expressed his anger and told Chivington that if the Natives were here to open peace talks, it might actually be wrong to attack them.  Captain Soule later wrote that “it was extremely difficult to see small children on their knees have their brains beaten out by a group of men claiming to be civilized”. Although Colonel Chivington was initially hailed as a hero for his actions (he lied about them to make himself out to be heroic), subsequent investigations spurred by reports of the truth revealed him to be a liar.  Because of the actions of Soule and Cramer, there are Natives living today who would not exist if they had not stood up to the Colonel and made efforts to save their ancestors from the slaughter. To end the show we speak a little about the DAPL and the recent events involving water cannons and tear gas by the police. 00:35:00Native Talk Radio PodcastnoPuyallup Podcast,DAPL news, domestically raised turkeys, man doesn't know who won the election,MassacreRemembering The Sand Creek Massacre, Who Won the Election? &Dakota Access UpdateIs Thanksgiving Offensive? Of course we all know the war which was waged against Natives in the centuries following colonization, but should that affect the yearly dinner with family? Or does the spirit of the holiday, being thankful for what we have today and having a tasty meal fit for an ancient king overcome past harms? This is one topic discussed today on the 30 minute Puyallup Native Radio Podcast We then go over some interesting Thanksgiving trivia facts, like how Thanksgiving became a national holiday to begin with, and why is it held on a Thursday anyhow? Why do we use turkey, when it wasn’t even at the first Thanksgiving, and did you know that Canada celebrated thanksgiving in 1578, even before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock? In the second segment, we highlight the new executive chef working for the National Museum of the American Indian, Freddie Bitsoie who will be cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year the Native way! American Indians are American citizens.
