Tonight's special guest is Johnnetta McSwain from Georgia, here to tell us her amazing story of success and recovery in the face of terrible adversity. Born to a teenaged shantytown alcoholic / drug addicted mother, she and her sister grew up in poverty in Birmingham, Alabama. They were left with their violent grandmother. At five-years-old Johnnetta began to be raped by her three uncles. By the age of eight she had contracted syphilis. As she and her sister grew older, they were caught in a cycle of drug and alcohol use, supporting their existence with theft, selling drugs and prostitution. In her late teens she was an unwed mother of two boys. Yet at age 30 she had an epiphany. Moving to Atlanta she obtained a GED (after two tries) a Batcher's degree and a Masters in Social Work (she's currently well on her way to a PhD). She literally had to teach herself how to write a coherent paragraph, but eventually wrote and published her life story, "Rising Above The Scars." Her life has completely turned around. As she approaches her mid 40s she's a much-sought-after public speaker and was the subject of an hour long Emmy award willing documentary about her life, which features narration by Jane Fonda. See the three part movie "The Road Beyond Abuse" on YouTube.
