Tonight's special guest is Danyelle Calcagno from Kansas City, a once neglected and emotionally traumatized child who's now an adult in recovery, on the peer committee and doing community outreach with Veronicas Voice, an anti trafficking organization. Danyelle grew up in Portland in a home with drug and alcohol addicted parents. At about age 10 she had to begin raising her younger sister. Around age 14 her mother left the family. Later she had a child with an extremely abusive alcoholic man. Danyelle ended up in Las Vegas, working in the adult entertainment industry (AKA sex trafficking industry)  for about 5 years. She returned to Portland and worked off and on in the industry as a Professional Dominatrix until about 6 months ago. That's when she began attending meetings at Veronica's Voice in Kansas City, where the Mission is to enforce, encourage and empower victims of commercial sexual exploitation (sex trafficking / prostitution) to make lifestyle changes which lead to recovery of their minds, bodies and spirits. Danyelle reports it has been extremely helpful to her and writes, "It has enabled me to give my mother another chance, and reinvent myself.  My mother was molested by her father and I understand that she suppressed her pain with substances and men. Hence, she couldn't give me something she did not have." Ms Calcagno hopes to get involved in the non profit sector as a wellness consultant and is planning on trying out for the reality show ~Survivor~ in Vail on the 17th of August.  As she puts it, "I know I am truly a Survivor."
