Tonight's special guest is Nomi Abadi from Los Angeles, a survivor of extreme child abuse who comes from a family of accomplished musicians and is now a teacher in her craft. A piano prodigy herself, Nomi began playing the instrument at the age of 3. Her overbearing, demanding and abusive father became her piano instructor. She says, "My father's abuse has completely changed who I am, and, as of today, for the better. I have become a very strong person in learning that what he did to me actually had nothing to do with me." She continues, "I have spoken many times for children at schools on behalf of keeping music mandatory education, but am more interested in speaking in front of a crowd that I can identify with on a deeper level. Having been abused at an early age, and divorcing my father at the age of 12, I have a lot of insight and coping mechanisms to share." Today Nomi looks back on her life, the trouble eating, the deep depression and being hospitalized for attempted suicides, once on her sixteenth birthday, and once more when she was almost seventeen. Nomi shares, "I have had many bumps along the road to arrive where I am today. But I would love to share my journey of coping with abuse. Though some days I still struggle, I have healed to become the strong woman I am today. If I could go back in time and show my 10-year-old self who and where I am today, I would have had hope earlier on."
