Tonight's special guest is John Chapman from Virginia, a child abuse survivor and thriver. A former law enforcement officer, he's now an activist. Chapman's distant relationship with his abusive and alcoholic father led to his abuse from the ages of 11-13 by a mentor who groomed him by providing him with much-needed attention, encouraging him to do his best, and showering him with gifts. Following the end of the abuse, Chapman became confused about his sexuality, often withdrawing from friends and even contemplating suicide. Through prayer, Chapman overcame those hardships and eventually became a police detective with the intention of helping other abuse victims. He fulfilled this goal when he joined the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, working to track down on-line sexual predators and saving numerous children from suffering their own abuse. After twenty-five years of police work, Chapman retired to start his own healing. As part of that journey, he appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, “Two Hundred Men Who Were Sexually Abused As Children.” He also appears in the recent documentary film, The Pursuit of Truth. Chapman, who lives with his wife Susan and their three children, is writing a book about his experiences as a survivor and police investigator, and to provide tips to parents for protecting their children from pedophiles. Chapman continues to participate in ongoing therapy. He has come full circle — a victim, a survivor, a protector, and now a thriver.
