Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Brian Lewis, a survivor of sexual assault while serving in the American military. During a tour of duty in the US Navy, Petty Officer Lewis, a submariner, was sexually assaulted by a superior non–commissioned officer. While the predator was known to the command for committing these types of acts before, he was never charged. But Brian was unfairly discharged from the service with a diagnosis of his having a "personality disorder." He's still fighting the Veteran's Administration for appropriate treatment for his PTSD, a direct result of his experiencing Military Sexual Trauma (MST). In 2010, there were 19,000 cases of sexual assault reported in the military, resulting in some 3,000 courts martial. Although Brian was subsequently granted disability, he continues to struggle with a frustrating and self-protecting military medical services system. He supports the efforts of Jackie Speier (D-CA, 12 District) who in November 2011 introduced the STOP Act, H.R. 3435, a bill that seeks to revise how the military deals with cases of sexual trauma. Please see: Service Women's Action Network ServiceWomen.org, the Military Rape Crisis Center StopMilitaryRape.org, and Protect our Defenders ProtectOurDefenders.com/main where there's a petition drive in support of these issues.
