Myth America Radio With John Briggs

Devoted to debunking American myths and exploring the inconsitencies and impossibilities that make the American Dream seem just like any other dream -- without the good night's sleep.

  • On Demand Episodes

    Date / Time:

Episode 4 Recap -- Freddie, Fannie, and a Little Bit of the Funny

Episode 4 went off with only one hitch, and that was my fault. Forgot to switch in the new show opening. Oh, well. I guess it debuts next week!

We talked about the housing crisis and  the impact of the new housing bill. It's all supply and demand, and in this case, speculation on who's a good credit risk. We presented the new American myth that buying a house is a good way to get ahead. Well, that used to be true for the poor and lower middle class, now it's only true for parts of the middle class and above.

We also examined two big mergers -- Mutual of Omaha gobbling up two bank chains out West, and the FCC approval of the Sirius-XM marriage. One merger to help a struggling industry, the other to save a dying one. XM-Sirius, welcome to the new monopoly club! But better them than Exxon-Mobil, if you know what I mean. There might be one satellite service now, but you still have a choice. Thanks for making Internet radio one of them, since we can everything they can do with a great deal more interaction and a whole lot more choice. I mean, you'll never catch every blogtalk host no matter how long you live!

We discussed the flip-flops for this campaign, examining Barack Obama's and John McCain's sudden turns. Not everything's a flip, though some were definitely flops. Listen to the show to find out where they did 180's.

And our Honor and Dishonor Rolls were updated. Getting Honorable Mention was Warren Buffett, the world's richest man, for discussing economics and taxation with Obama. Buffett says he and his class should pay more taxes. We agree. Winning top honors was former GA Rep. and current Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr for testifying before a Congressional committe on executive excesses. He may be trying to grab conservatives fed up with George W. Bush, but he definitely risked angering some Republicans he's trying to grab. Winning Dishonorable Mention was the aforementioned George W., for joking about lying to the American people, Laura hating rural America, his financial struggles, and the fact that Dallas doesn't have a housing problem. Listen to the show to catch the entire tape. It's worth it. Trust me. My blood's still boiling. So who could beat that? How about CBS News? I expect politicians to lie, but news should be held to a higher standard. During a Katie Couric interview, CBS edited in a different John McCain response to a question about the surge. The answer he gave was factually inaccurate, so they gave him a better one from a different question. But the media hates him. Unbelievable. Someone at CBS should get fired. Also worth a listen

I did make a mathematical error on the show, which I will address next week, and my sense of humor is finally starting to rear its sarcastic head. Been playing this straight, but after all those years with Left-Wing Laughs, it's time to get funny. More comedy clips to run next week.

    Thanks for listening (and reading)!

  • Original Air Date:

Fannie, Freddie, and the Flip Off

We'll examine the flying flip-flop allegations all the way around, then study Freddie and Fannie's American Dream of owning your own home. Then, we'll get angry over President Bush's comments on Wall St.'s binge, before closing out by adding names to our Honor and Dishonor Rolls

  • Date / Time:

Episode 4 Tomorrow Night -- Fanie, Freddie, and the Flip-Off

Episode 4 airs tomorrow night at 11pm. We'll square off on the mortgage crisis, the housing bill, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and all the rest. Is the American Dream of owning a home just another American Myth? And it's early yet, but never too early for the charge of flip-flopper, so we'll examine some of the candidate's positions, and see what's really a flip-flop, what's consistent, and what's simply a change in policy. We'll take a quick at the week's big media mergers, and finish up by adding names to the Honor and Dishonor Rolls. That gives us the chance to find out why Wall St. was drunk, why Laura hates rural living, and why George W. thinks the mortgage crisis itself is just an American Myth. Plus, you can find out which media outlet loves John McCain just enough to inadvertently stab him in the back.

See you tomorrow night. Thanks for listening (and reading)!

Episode 3 Recap -- Late Start, First Caller

Episode 3 -- Who Wants to Be Upper Middle Class? started two minutes late due to a circuit overload, I guess. Good to see that the switchboard at BlogTalkRadio is so busy. That's a good sign. A very good sign.

Once on the air, though, we jumped on the drop in oil prices, attributing the $20 decline to more than just supply and demand. If speculators are driving it up every time an Iranian sneezes, why aren't they also bringing it down given all the peace ovetures (troop withdrawals, meetings with Iran, etc.)? Which is what led us to the myth of supply and demand, not only on economic and theoretical bases, but on every day speculators who treat the market like roulette at a backroom casino.

I got my first call ever from Tom in Maine, asking about the Peak Oil theory. We both agree that it's already here or will be soon. Check out his show at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/tomin08 (I think!). Thanks, Tom!

Then we jumped into why a college degree no longer means a good living. It's been a long time coming, but finally the numbers back it. Get a Master's or a Ph.D. if you want to live the good life. A B.A. is B.S. when it comes to keeping up with inflation. That led us to play the game Who Wants to Be Upper Middle Class? where a million dollars no longer buys what it used to. What does it buy? Listen and find out!

We debuted a semi-regular segment, Blonde Moments in Politics, named for Ann Coulter, but naming Michael Savage (nee Weiner) for his comments about autistic children. Moron.

and finally, of course, we named our Honor and Dishonor Roll winners, with honorable mention going to Judge Keith Allred for his pre-trial ruling in the Salim Hamdan case, and winning the top award -- and I can't believe I'm writing this -- George W. Bush, for making diplomatic overtures toward Iran. Hey, if he's willing to lean in Barack Obama's direction, I have to give it to him. It's as unexpected as his winning. Dishonorable mention went to Jesse Jackson for his use of the N-word in his now-famous whispered tirade, but the big loser was Fox News, for withholding the clip in the first place. Hey, Fox, there's another N-word -- news. Next time, air the damn tape and don't milk the story.

See you next Tuesday at 11pm when we'll discuss all these flip-flop charges and the housing crisis, plus update the Rolls. Thanks for listening (and reading)!
