The Church at Sardis was called a "Dead Church" though it had a reputation that it was alive. In other words, it had the "form of godliness, but denied the power thereof." (2 Tim. 3:5). This Formalistic church was given over to fomal exhibition in worship and head-knowledge religion. Jesus says to "come out" from them. Here we see the literal chuch, the characterist of the church period of Sardis that began in or around 1500 A.D. as well as the characteristic of so many in Chirstendom today. Those among us who gather each Sunday (or Saturday) to worship in a stoic metedological driven way which greives and quenches the Spirit. Don't be fooled by the "pomp and circumstance", run for your life!
