MYNDTALK - What You Should Know About Teen Addiction and Treatment: - Dr. Jennifer Golick

Dr. Jennifer Golick, Clinical Director at Muir Wood Adolescent and Family Services, joins MyNDTALK to describe and discuss "the boys at Muir Wood [who] are full of promise and potential. They are bright, smart, funny, articulate, creative, sensitive boys. Most have been high achievers in school, sports, and social endeavors, but are struggling and have turned to drugs and alcohol as a means of coping. Some boys have recently been through trauma or loss, such as divorce or death of a loved one. Their parents care deeply about their well being, and are scared and confused by changes in mood, behavior and motivation.

As a program that offers a high level of engagement with both our residents and their families, we only treat a small number of boys at a time. ... Boys must be 12 to 17 years old at the time of admission, with substance abuse or process addiction (such as internet and gaming addiction) as a primary issue. Parents typically call us out of concern for known substance abuse and recent changes in their son, such as: Extreme personality changes Intense mood swings Difficulties in personal relationships Academic difficulties Erratic or antisocial behavior This is NOT an inclusive list * *
