Opening up a discussion on the movie Precious. Here's some food for thought. After watching the movie Precious, it took me a few days to get back to normal. I've always said about domestic violence and abuse that "experiences may be different, but the pain in still the same". There was some criticism about the movie because of the way it portrays African American women. But, in doing some research, I came across the movie Juno that came out in 2007. Here is the description for Precious (2009): Precious (2009) The film focuses on Clareece Precious Jones, an overweight, undereducated 16-year-old who is physically and mentally abused by her mother and about to have her second child, both of whom are the result of the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her father and who she contracts AIDS from. When her school learns of her pregnancy she is expelled, but the principal still cares enough to advise of an alternative school that could help her work towards earning her GED. Here is the description for the movie Juno (2007): Juno (2007) is a whip-smart teen confronting an unplanned pregnancy by her classmate Bleeker. With the help of her hot best friend Leah, Juno finds her unborn child a "perfect" set of parents: an affluent suburban couple, Mark and Vanessa, longing to adopt. Luckily, Juno has the total support of her parents as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs. Here you have two teens, both pregnant. What is wrong with not only the way society perceives this, but how it's portrayed in film?

November is Prematurity Awareness Month. While this is a very difficult topic for me, I will do my best to bring to light how domestic violence affects a pregnant woman and her unborn child.
