Debbie Poryes was born in Santa Monica, CA. She began playing piano at five, practicing everything from Chopin to show tunes. Fascinated with musical theory and structure, she played jazz standards, composing, and improvising. She loved the music of Monk and Miles as a teenager and decided to become a jazz pianist. On full scholarship at the University of California at Berkeley, she left school to be a full-time professional jazz musician. At 20, her first regular paying gig lasted a year at a restaurant in Berkeley, where she performed five nights a week from 5 p.m. to midnight.
In the 1980s, Debbie earned a degree in Jazz Studies and became fluent in Dutch, while teaching Jazz in the Netherlands at conservatories in Hilversum and Arnhem. While living in Europe, she recorded a trio LP for Timeless Records. She arranged for, accompanied, and recorded with numerous singers as well as freelancing with other groups. In 1990, she returned to the U.S. , got married and raised her daughter.
Since 2007, Debbie released three CDs: A Song in Jazz with her trio (Jazzschool); Catch Your Breath with her quartet (Origin/OA2) and Two and Fro, duo with Bruce Williamson (Origin/OA2). A popular teacher, Debbie has internet students around the globe and a waiting list for her private practice. She is a faculty member of Berkeley Jazzschool and a member of the Music Teachers’ Association of California, Jazz Education Network and Jazz Corner in NYC. Website: www.debbieporyes.com
