  • Kiler Davenport Live: Interview with Bernie Nelson

    in Country Music

Like new strings on a well-traveled guitar, Bernie Nelson is both timely and timeless. Bernie's rich country vocals and well-crafted lyrics comfortably draw you in at his sellout shows.
With his roots seated deep in the truest form of country music, Bernie attributes his selection and conviction with his songs to his closeness with Country's best like Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Townes Van Zant and the more modern Garth Brooks and Chris Ledoux.
A favorite at the world famous Bluebird Café. Bernie has also graced the stages along side his legendary friends like Darryl Worley, Tracy Lawrence, Leroy Parnell and many others.
If he's not performing or writing, he can be found teaching his craft at his log home west of Nashville. That's right, he shares his expertise with aspiring songwriters at his infamous “Weekend At Bernie's” Songwriters Camp.
Bernie has been blessed with a successful career both as a songwriter and entertainer. His songs have sold over 25 million copies with multi-platinum cuts on the works of major artists such as Conway Twitty, Ricky Van Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Wynona, Colin Raye, Confederate Railroad, Chris Ledoux, Kris Kristofferson, John Anderson and many more.
Bernie achieved 'million-airplay' status on his #1 hit, “Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind” with Confederate Railroad. Most recently he's enjoyed success with cuts on Mark Wills' “Looking For America”, Montgomery Gentry's “Damn Baby” and Tracy Lawrence's “ 'The Ride' and 'Heaven For A While'”.

  • HOWARD HEWITT - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW-WED, MAR 18, 2015 - 5:00 pm PST

    in Music

Howard Hewett (born October 1, 1955, Akron, Ohio, United States) is an American R&B and gospel singer, and former lead vocalist of the R&B group Shalamar.
Raised in Akron, Ohio, Hewett moved to Los Angeles in 1976, where he met John and Alonzo Daniels, owners of an historical club in the LA Crenshaw district, called Maverick's Flat. It was at Maverick's that Hewett first met Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley (eventually Shalamar). Hewett and the Daniels brothers formed a show group called "Beverly Hills" and through Daniels bookings toured throughout Europe, the UK, Scandinavia and Asia for all of 1978 till the middle of 1979.
After returning from overseas, Hewett started recording for Jeffrey Bowen, a Motown producer (The Temptations, Commodores, Bonnie Pointer) who was working on a solo project on guitarist Eddie Hazel (Parliament-Funkadelic). Hewett never completed the project because towards the end of 1979, he got a call from Jeffrey Daniel, who was on the road with Shalamar in the middle of a promotional tour. They had suddenly found themselves in need of a lead singer and Daniel made Hewett an offer that he accepted. Within three days Hewett flew to New Jersey, where he met up with Watley and Daniel, rehearsed the lip synch and choreography to the current Shalamar single "Take That To The Bank", and found himself in front of a TV camera on a local dance show in Paterson, New Jersey. They completed the promotional tour and returned to Los Angeles and immediately started recording the Big Fun LP with their producer, Leon Sylvers. The trio went on to record songs such as "Second Time Around", "Make That Move", "A Night to Remember", "Dancing in the Sheets" and the ballad "This Is for the Lover in You". Hewett was the group's lead singer from 1979 until 1985.

  • Kiler Davenport Live: Interview with Morgan Riley

    in Country Music

With an unbiased passion for music – regardless of genre – it’s clear that Skytone Entertainment artist Morgan Riley offers something new to country listeners. Her soon-to-be-released album Collage is just that… A melting pot of genres with an ever-so-slight country dominance. While the road to this release hasn’t always been smooth, Riley has handled each curve with hope and exuberance – all the while finding her sound and writing to connect with her fans. “I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a reason – everything that’s happened throughout my life has led to my relationship with Skytone and the release of this album. I couldn’t be happier.”
Until the album’s release – set for early spring – Riley continues to write, perform and work with children aged two through five at New Springs Church. “I’m really blessed to be where I’m at in life. I have no doubt given the team I’ve surrounded myself with that this release has the potential for great success. I feel like Collage is me – the first project I’ve done that truly represents my voice. While all other genres play a part in this album, my dad always encouraged my country side. Now that I’ve found it, I can’t wait to share it with fans.”

  • MUDDY WATERS JR - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - TUES, MAR, 24 2015 - 7:00 pm PST

    in Music

Muddy Waters or Mud Morganfield? It’s almost impossible to tell. Of course, nothing would please Mud more than hearing people say he sounds just like his late father “Muddy Waters” on the track “Loco Motor” from his new album Son Of The Seventh Son.
Naturally, Mud, the eldest son of legendary bluesman “Muddy Waters”, was drawn to music at an early age. He learned to make the best of his famous father’s hectic touring schedule, seeing Muddy only during brief respites at home in Chicago. Ever the devoted father, Muddy bought his son a drum set every Christmas, which Mud learned to play at age seven. Later, he switched to bass guitar while delving into songwriting.
Mud and his younger brother, noted blues singer and guitarist “Big” Bill Morganfield, entertained the idea of becoming professional musicians after Muddy’s death in 1983. Blues fans were introduced to Mud at a tribute concert to his father in 2007, but his performance at the Chicago Blues Festival that same year brought him instant recognition.
Mud composed most of the songs on his award-winning album Son Of The Seventh Son, including “Blues In My Shoes.” He also performs the Muddy Waters tune, “You Can’t Lose What You Ain’t Never Had.” According to producer and harmonica player Bob Corritore, the CD “brings you the great Mud Morganfield in all his glory.” It was recorded in Chicago and features some of the city’s top Blues musicians.
In 2014, Mud’s new album, For Pops,  recorded in tribute to his late father, together with fabulous Thunderbirds frontman, Kim Wilson, sees him make a very personal statement about his roots.

  • Manda Interview with Az 1 Promo Radio

    in Music

Amanda Canzurlo is one of those inspiring, beautiful people you meet for a moment yet remember for a lifetime. Listening to this girl sing is like joining her in the front seat of a fast scarlet-red convertible, cruising the coast then heading for the mountains. With the feeling of the wind in your hair, you’ll have a smile on your face for the entire ride, even though it might be but for a brief moment in time before she takes off on the next part of her extraordinary journey. Her music, as all great music should, captures an energy that comes from deep within. Amanda’s rich, velvet voice, powerful yet soothing, is the perfect vehicle for her inspiring lyrics that recount the highs and lows of her childhood and teen years and the things you learn as you grow. At times she will make you want to let go and dance on your bed singing into a hairbrush whilst throwing your hair around, at others you’ll lie in the dark and listen to the story and melody of a longing ballad. She makes you reflect on your own past, and future destiny, and believe that there is so much still to come and that it’s bound to be an adventure. Her songs, penned at the piano, are truly great pop songs yet make no mistake; these are not lightweight sugary songs with a cherry on top.  Amanda’s care-free attitude, her love of life, her stunning voice and talent for song writing, her drive and her beauty are apparent from the moment she starts to sing. This is one girl who will never give up, and who will no doubt get there – in a red convertible with the wind in her hair.

  • Kiler Davenport Live: Interview with Sean Patrick McGraw

    in Country Music

Call it Irish grit. “If you grew up where I grew up,” McGraw recalls, “you were automatically hyphenated either Irish, Polish, or Italian, and your dad worked in the mill, that was a given.” Hailing from a small steel industry town about 50 miles outside of Buffalo, New York, McGraw was raised on Hee-Haw (“We loved Conway Twitty, or at least his haircut”) and rough games of hockey and football. Small for his age and showing little athletic promise, he gravitated towards music, and good thing: “If I’d have stuck with the sports I liked any longer I might have ended up getting my head taken off. We never wore pads, let alone helmets.” Instead, McGraw grew out his hair, picked up a cheap Japanese guitar, and at 13 started a rock band with friends, playing in bars a couple of nights a week—with a note from his mother in hand, in case the cops asked any questions.
As soon as he finished high school, McGraw hightailed it to Los Angeles with rock star dreams and a country sensibility. Wearing out records by Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle, and “digging through stacks of junk at the Pasadena flea market looking for old Buck Owens and Johnny Cash on vinyl,” he developed his own unique hard-core hillbilly sound.
It’s a crazy life, and McGraw looks upon it with bemused satisfaction in “My So Called Life,” reflecting, “Some days I own this town, other days it shoots me down/Always I’m still hanging round, holdin’ on to hope.” Expertly depicting the driving pace of his “Honky Tonk Life,” McGraw stubbornly continues to hope: “I could quit all this road stuff, go back to my real job, put in a straight 9 to 5/But I love the neon, I love the people, and I love the Honky Tonk Life.”

  • CYNTHIA HOLIDAY - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW- TUES, MAR, 31 2015 - 7:00 pm PST

    in Music

She's not Billie, not Judy, not Jennifer, not Carmen, not Nancy, it's Cynthia Holiday!
Cynthia Holiday is a real crowd pleaser and her renditions of straight-ahead jazz, blues and pop standards are full of swing, improvisation and soul. Clearly, singing live before an audience is where she feels most comfortable.
Kevin Mahogany says, "I met Cynthia many years ago when I used to frequent various jam sessions in Harlem clubs. I was struck by her ability to quickly command the stage. Cynthia has fantastic stage presence and it's time for her music to be heard."
Cynthia says "I love the up-and-close feeling of performing in small, intimate venues like SMOKE or Showmans Jazz Club in NYC. I also enjoy the thrill of performing for an audience of 10,000 + people at outdoor events like the Harlem Jazz & Blues Festival or Hartford Jazz Festival." Following her performance, the Hartford Courier's music review said of Cynthia "She may have been unfamiliar to the audience, but Holiday quickly won over the crowd with her blues-soaked swing and charming banter."
Since the 2008 release of her debut album, All The Way, on the Miles High Records Label, Cynthia Holiday has made new fans and friends in the US and internationally. Most recently she served as a judge in the 2013 Asian Dreams Jazz Vocal Competition followed by a performance with the TS Monk Septet in Osaka, Japan.
Cynthia's gifted vocals and natural inclination for jazz is attributed to her upbringing in Newark, New Jersey where music filled her home on any given day. Her stepfather, trumpeter Calvin Hughes was a band leader and performed with such jazz greats as Count Basie, Frank Foster, Clark Terry, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and Big Maybelle.

Andy Allo ~ Every so often, an artist comes along who is indefinable -- an artist who is truly paving her own way with bits of music, sound, vibes and words that speak to her on a deeper level. Such an artist isn't bound by genre and is intent on creating a unique musical expression of herself. Cameroonian singer/songwriter/guitarist Andy Allo is that artist.
Andy's new solo sophomore album, Superconductor, has people calling her a refreshing songbird with a bright funk soul. She joined Prince's New Power Generation band in 2011 as singer/guitarist, and co-wrote three of the album's nine tracks with Prince. Andy wrote the remaining six songs on the record and enlisted the help of some legends to make her sound complete: legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker and Trombone Shorty.  She recently completed a string of sold out tour dates in Europe and is embarking on her third album. She continues to make waves as an independent artist.  "I feel like this is just the beginning of my story," she says. "There’s a lot I want to share with the world.”

  • An Intimate Evening with Gino Vannelli

    in Music

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Gino Vannelli is one of three sons. As a child, Gino's greatest passion was music, and he began playing percussion at an early age. By the age of 15, Gino began writing songs. Just out of high school, he signed his first recording contract with RCA and went on to study music at McGill University.
This quote summarizes the man in a nutshell; One Thursday afternoon at Place Des Arts, I remember hearing the Montreal Symphony playing “Daphne and Chloe” by Maurice Ravel. I walked away shaking my head, muttering to myself, ‘What was that!? I was so deeply moved—bewildered by the sounds I had just heard. It was the moment I discovered to what heights music could draw a man’s soul.”
Gino Vannelli stirs the soul with his voice, his music, and most importantly, his life philosophy and his sincere and gentle demeanour.
Join us this evening as we learn more about the man behind the music, share valuable life lessons, and of course, enjoy great musical performances. This episode will be available On Demand for you to listen to at your leisure if you are unable to join us live.
