  • Folk Friday With New Folk's Todd Kessler & Peter Nye of Chicago Blue Grass Band

    in Music

Mary E. welcomes Todd Kessler and Peter Nye. Both are world-class musicians taking the Chicagoland area by storm! Todd Kessler will be sharing  "Halleluja" and talking about his performance with The New Folk at the "Taste of Chicago" july 12th. Nye will be performing at Water's Edge overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan tonight, July 11th.
Todd Kessler of The New Folk celebrated the release of their debut album, Sea Fever, with an August 2012 “Practice Space Presents” residency at Schuba's Tavern, but the story behind The New Folk began in 2005 as singer/songwriter Todd Kessler went in to the studio to record his debut album. That album, entitled We Are The MusicMakers, was released in 2006 and with the backing of his original band helped Kessler to make his name in the local Chicago music scene.
Peter Nye is a singer song writer and founder of The Chicago Bluegrass Band. A multi-instrumentalist playing guitar, banjo and bass, Pete has toured Scandinavia, the EU and the US. His musical style is varied and includes: Celtic, C&W, Jazz, Blues and Rock.He is described as simply a bold man on stage, a fantabulous flat picker and lead singer with a gritty music sensibility honed by years of playing country music roadhouses. As a veteran performer with over thirty years on the Midwest music scene, Pete delivers a powerful vocal performance complimented by sizzling flat-picked leads and rock-solid rhythm work. Peter began cultivating his musical skills at the age of 13 playing the local Honky-tonks around Chicago.

  • Part 5: Close-Up Talk Radio spotlights Rosalind Cazares of Mama's Temple Choir

    in Music

Murray, UT – Gospel artist Mahalia Jackson said, “When you sing gospel you have a feeling there is a cure for what's wrong.” When someone sings from the heart in praise of God, it fills their spirit, restores their faith and inspires fellow believers.
Mama's Temple Church Choir is a Pentecostal gospel choir led by Minister of Music Rosalind E. Cazares. Named for Rosalind’s mother, Dr. Rosemary (Mama) Redmon Cosby, the choir has since gone to become one of the most renowned in the country, even performing with contemporary artists like Reba McEntire, Lyle Lovett, Michael Bolton and Celine Dion.
“We’re keeping Mama’s legacy alive,” says Rosalind.
Mama and her four children left Indianapolis in 1961 after Mama received a call from God. Rosalind herself has been singing gospel music since she was seven years old, and at its peak, the choir featured over 250 members singing its songs of praise.
But the choir had fallen on hard times in 1983 and would have remained that way until Rosalind answered her own call from God.
“I had a dream that I was leading my mother’s choir,” Rosalind recalls. “She called me back two weeks later and asked me, ‘Do you think you can direct the choir?” I said ‘I believe I can.’ It is hard work, but I love it. It’s in my heart.”
Under the direction of the Cazares, the choir has brought its unique traditional gospel music to countless venues throughout the state of Utah for over 30 years, performing everything from “Amazing Grace” to Pharrell's “Happy.”
“When I sing these songs it fills my spirit. I feel God, so of course you’ve got to get that shout in,” laughs Cazares. “It’s a really good feeling to hear the sound of all these voices singing His praise. God can hear us.”

  • The Gifted and Talented Claudette Ortiz @myclaudette from R&B Divas Joins Us

    in Music

At 16, a stunningly beautiful and vocally talented CLAUDETTE ORTIZ, was discovered by Wyclef Jean and Jerry Wonda becoming the third and only female member of City High. The hot young trio quickly took the world by storm with their poignantly conscious debut single, “What Would You Do.” The Grammy nominated group described as a “refreshingly innovative mix of R&B, Soul and a smattering of Hip-Hop” by Vibe magazine consisted of Claudette, Ryan Toby and Ryan Pardo.
But, it was not until their follow up single, “Caramel,” and Claudette’s duet with Wyclef, “Two Wrongs,” hit the airwaves that audiences and industries everywhere began to hone in on the Caribbean beauty’s ability to play the guitar and her vocal prowess.  Then it all stopped. The group disbanded.
Desperate, humiliated and on her last dime, she decided to join Air Force Reserves. However, the day before her appointment to sign in, she got a call from TV One’s producer of the reality show, R&B Divas, LA.   The show stars six divas: documenting their professional careers, friendships and personal lives as they play, work and struggle to get their careers back on track.

About Music

Music is indeed the universal language. You don't need words to understand a feeling conveyed by a particular piece of music; all it takes is a killer beat to make stadiums of people with vastly different worldviews jump out of their chairs and dance it out. And everyone has a memory of how a particular song served as a soundtrack for a first kiss, a graduation or an unforgettable road trip. Every day, you'll discover how eclectic BlogTalkRadio's music offerings are, as music fans, makers, movers and shakers across the globe share their passion for any and every genre: Adult Contemporary, Dubstep, Hip Hop, R&B, Dance, Jazz, '80s, Classical, Big Band, Country, Children's, Folk, Indie, Oldies, New Age, World, Christian, Opera, Alternative, Broadway, Punk, Rock, Classic Rock, Gospel, Singer-Songwriter and much more. You'll even find episodes devoted to specific instruments. So go on, find your beat by simply pressing play.
