Supernanny? Not this time! It's Super-Manny to Mr. Media's Rescue!

Interview Starts @ 9:15 p.m. The world’s first Super-Manny, Mike Ruggles, meets his match with a chaotic family of six from Colorado, on ABC’s “Supernanny,” when “Super-Manny Special: Griswold Family” airs on Friday, Dec. 4 @ 8 p.m. on ABC.

Ruggles is a warm Chicagoan with over 17 years’ experience as a teacher and developmental therapist for children. He focuses on the specific challenges presented by this family. After an observation period, he kicks the parents out of the house and gives the kids a voice by using role-playing techniques to determine some of the root problems, as the parents watch from a monitor. In the Griswolds’ case, this provides a tearful comeuppance for Mom and Dad as Joe confesses his fear of his father and imitates his dad’s rages. In addition, Mike has some tough talk for Roberta about the continued effect of her negativity on the family and her marriage -- if things continue down this path, failure is assured.

Super-Manny also creates an unforgettable interventional moment with Brianna, forcing her to confront the potential consequences of alcohol abuse by meeting survivors of car accidents that involved drinking and driving. Young Lauren weeps as Mike leaves the house later, in fear that her family will revert to their old habits. But Super-Manny has some powerful and innovative ways to break through to everyone including taking the whole family on a camping trip.

It’s a Griswold Family Vacation unlike any other, and it will change their lives.

Robert Wuhl, ASSUME THE POSITION, ARLI$$ actor: Mr. Media Radio Interview (Rewind)

Mr. Media’s favorite movie? Gotta be The Hollywood Knights, with Robert Wuhl!

(Originally Broadcast July 3, 2007) Robert Wuhl cracks me up. Always has, always will.

His HBO series, “Arli$$," about an over-ambitious Hollywood sports agent, was must-see TV in my house for years, and I’ve seen his first movie, Hollywood Knights, hundreds of times. Really, hundreds. If you haven’t seen it, buy it.

In terms of media experience, Wuhl played reporters in Batman and Cobb and a disc jockey in Good Morning, Vietnam. And when Billy Crystal hosted the Academy Awards in 1990, 1991, and 1992, Wuhl contributed a good many of Crystal’s best lines. This, I’m sure of.

It doesn’t hurt that we share a birthday, October 9th, and we’re both New Jersey natives.

This month, Wuhl returns to HBO with his second “Assume the Position” special. It’s a raucous run through history in which Professor Wuhl takes charge of a class of college students and shares “more stories that made America and the stories that America made up.”

Ray Billingsley, CURTIS daily cartoonist: Mr. Media Radio Interview (Rewind)

Cartoonist Ray Billingsley and creation ‘Curtis’ speak with one voice to Mr. Media!

(Originally broadcast April 13, 2007) When I was researching my biography, Will Eisner: A Spirited Life, one of the biggest surprises for me was learning that two extremely successful daily cartoonists, Ray Billingsley of “Curtis," and Patrick McDonnell of “Mutts,” were once students of Eisner’s at the New York School of Visual Arts.

Eisner spoke highly of both men, and he developed an ongoing mentor-style relationship with Billingsley, who was a very young man, just about 16, when he first took Eisner’s class.

Billingsley’s strip, “Curtis,” currently appears in more than 250 newspapers. It’s a steady performer recognized by the American Cancer Society for Curtis’ efforts to get his father to stop smoking. And Billingsley takes the detour from the usual story lines every December for an original Kwanzaa tale.

Peter Kuper, STOP FORGETTING TO REMEMBER cartoonist: Mr. Media Radio Interview (Rewind)

Graphic novelist Peter Kuper tells Mr. Media: ‘Stop Forgetting to Remember!’

(Originally broadcast June 21, 2007) I think the reason that many people who never read comic books find themselves drawn to graphic novels isn’t because they come in hard cover or because they cost more or because they’re hip at the moment.

I think it’s because we’re more likely to find little pieces of ourselves in the stories, which are often more autobiographical than Spider-Man or Green Lantern could ever be.

At least that’s the thought I kept returning to as I read through Peter Kuper’s latest graphic novel, Stop Forgetting to Remember.

The youthful sexual frustration, the aimlessness, the side comments to no one in particular, the social doubts, the eagerness/anxiety over fatherhood, the pain of maintaining an adult friendship -- there were so many things that could have been ripped from my own life that I couldn’t put the book down.

Kuper, whose previous graphic novels include Sticks and Stones, The System, and an adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, is perhaps most widely recognized as the artist behind Mad magazine’s legendary “Spy vs. Spy” these days. And his strip “The Virgin” was optioned by HBO as well as actor Forrest Whitaker’s production company.

Peter Golenbock, 7: THE MICKEY MANTLE NOVEL author: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Mickey Mantle, Marilyn Monroe, Peter Golenbock and your old pal, Mr. Media!

(Originally broadcast March 15, 2007) Today, I am sitting in the St. Petersburg, Florida, dining room of popular sports writer, Peter Golenbock. Peter, who’s written many books about and with members of the New York Yankees, including: Dynasty; The Bronx Zoo, which he wrote with Sparky Lyle; Balls, written with Craig Nettles; Guidry, with Ron Guidry; Number One, written with Billy Martin; and Wild, High, and Tight, written about Billy Martin. He also co-wrote Idiot with then-Boston Red Sox player Johnny Damon; Bats, with former Mets manager Davey Johnson; Thunder and Lightning, with hockey all-star Phil Esposito; and several racing books, including NASCAR Confidential and American Zoom.

You can see an entire list of Golenbock’s books at his Web site, GolenbockBooks.com. He has also started writing a blog.

Despite his impeccable credentials, Golenbock recently found himself in the news on the heels of a book he did not write, O. J. Simpson’s quasi-confessional, If I Did It. By coincidence. Golenbock’s latest book, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel, a story that takes liberties with the real life of his old friend and former Bronx bomber/slugger, Mickey Mantle, was also due to be put out by Simpson’s publisher, Judith Regan.

In the storm that followed cancellation of Simpson’s book and Regan’s firing, Golenbock’s book was cancelled, too. But Golenbock’s book didn’t stay cancelled for long.

Mark Schultz, AL WILLIAMSON'S FLASH GORDON author, artist: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Co-author Mark Schultz rushes in to save Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon and Mr. Media!

Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon: A Lifelong Vision of the Heroic, collects all the major works of the artist featuring the character. At 256 pages, it encompasses Williamson’s three stints of depicting Flash in comic book format: the legendary King Comics stories from the 1960s, the 1980 adaptation of the Universal Flash Gordon motion picture, and the Marvel Comics miniseries of 1994.

In addition to these classics of sequential storytelling, Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon features Williamson’s Flash drawings done for commercial illustration and prints, his assists on the “Flash Gordon” comic strip, a variety of Flash images contributed to amateur publications, and a selection of largely unpublished images spanning his interest in the character from childhood to the conclusion of his career.

Williamson was born in New York City in 1931. Williamson’s professional credits are both legion and legendary. Developing an elegantly illustrative cartooning style, he first came to prominence with the highly influential EC comics line of the 1950s. His much beloved work in the mid-’60s on King Features Flash Gordon comic book series garnered him a “Best Comic Book Cartoonist” award from the prestigious National Cartoonist Society.

Mark Schultz has been cartooning, illustrating, and writing for over twenty years. He is best known as the creator of the award-winning speculative adventure comic book Xenozoic Tales, which has been adapted to television as the animated series Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.

Elizabeth Fournier, ALL MEN ARE CREMATED EQUAL author: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Careful, Mr. Media! All Men Are Cremated Equal author Elizabeth Fournier is coming for you!

After she got over her dream of being a Solid Gold Dancer, Elizabeth Fournier, author of All Men Are Cremated Equal: My 77 Blind Dates, promptly headed into the local funeral home and asked for a job, any job. She became the live-in night keeper which meant she resided in a trailer in the far reaches of a large, hilly cemetery and slept with a shotgun near her bed. It was the scariest summer of her life.

She is currently the voice of the autopsy exhibit in the forensic wing at the United States National Museum of Medicine and a full-time mortician. She is also a ballroom dance instructor at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. But she couldn't resist writing the story of her unusual method of dating that led her to the love of her life.

Anat Baron, BEER WARS documentary filmmaker: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Beer Wars documentary filmmaker Anat Baron pours Mr. Media a tall cold one!

Anat Baron is a filmmaker who happens to be allergic to alcohol. So why in the world would she even want to make a documentary about beer? It’s because Baron had alcohol on the brain not in her veins.

Before taking on the challenges of filmmaking, Baron was the former general manager of mike's hard lemonade, where she brought this little entrepreneurial company up to $200 million dollars in annual sales. She is an expert and industry insider who had continually seen independent brewers being swallowed up and silenced by corporate beer giants, Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors. Baron leveraged her experience to expose the inner workings of the male dominated beer industry in her smart and thought provoking documentary film Beer Wars, which will be released nationally on DVD Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009.

Beer Wars is a no holds barred exploration of the U.S. beer industry that reveals the truth behind the label of your favorite beer. In trying to understand how unbalanced the beer industry was, Baron discovered an incredible connection between beer and politics which led to a bigger investigation of the three tier system and why the big players are so intent to keep things exactly as they are.

Beer Wars sheds light on the mammoth beer corporations Anheuser-Bush and MillerCoors, who continue to push out and squash the American dream of the small business brewers, while they continue to compromise the taste and quality of the beer they currently mass produce.
