Billy Bob Thornton, THE BOXMASTERS, BAD SANTA musician, actor: Mr. Media Interview REWIND

You just can’t pigeonhole Billy Bob Thornton. Think about the movie roles he’s most famous for and see what, if any, connection there is: Carl in Sling Blade; Hank Grotowski in Monster’s Ball; Morris Buttermaker in Bad News Bears; Coach Gaines in Friday Night Lights, and my favorite, Willy in Bad Santa. Who would figure that the guy who portrayed so many varied and somewhat disturbed characters had a musical soul too? But last fall, Billy Bob Thornton’s fourth CD, Beautiful Door, was released. It’s a collection of original, contemporary songs with a touch of country, all written and sung by Thornton. He also is the drummer on the album’s tracks. And just like his choices as an actor, no two songs on the album are easily matched and categorized. You’ll recognize his deep voice instantly on the somber opening ballad, “It’s Just Me,” but be surprised that it’s also him on the rockin’ “Hope for Glory.”

ZITS and BABY BLUES daily cartoonists Jim Borgman, Jerry Scott, Rick Kirkman: Mr. Media Interview

Jerry Scott has become a superstar of the cartooning world. As co-creator of Baby Blues and Zits, he is one of just four cartoonists in history to have two daily comics strips running in more than 1,000 newspapers each. In 1995, Jerry got to know Jim Borgman while their flight was delayed on the tarmac of Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport waiting for a blown tire to be changed. A year later they created Zits on the front porch of a cabin in Sedona, Ariz. When longtime friends Rick Kirkman and Jerry first discussed doing a comic strip about parenthood, Rick, at least, knew what he was talking about. Jerry, who had no children, thought what Rick was going through as a parent was very funny — temper tantrums. Dirty diapers. Teething pains. Baby Blues was born.

Bob Alper, WHAT ARE YOU... A COMEDIAN? rabbi/comedian: Mr. Media Interview

There’s a reason why XM and Sirius satellite radio play Rabbi Bob Alper’s bits several times daily, often sandwiched between Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby: Bob’s unique background…he’s an ordained rabbi who served congregations for fourteen years and holds a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary…prepared him well for a 20-year comedy career that’s intelligent, sophisticated, and 100% clean. Steve Rosenbaum, MAGNIFY.NET, MTV UNfiltered creator: Mr. Media Interview

If you want to see where the future of media is going, just ask Steve Rosenbaum to draw you a map. He's following a path that he single-handedly charted starting back in 1993 when he developed, created and produced the groundbreaking MTV UNfiltered. Networks like CBS, A&E, and HBO all counted on Rosenbaum to help them explore and deploy user-generated video in programming. But while his resume may detail a long list of historical firsts, Rosenbaum is more focused on where video is headed. Today, his latest company is Magnify.net, the fastest growing user-generated video network on the web. Magnify.net boasts 40,000 partner sites and one million page views a day.

  • Original Air Date:
