Marc Spitz, BOWIE biographer: Mr. Media Radio Interview

This is Mr. Media Ground Control to biographer Marc Spitz: Let’s talk David Bowie!

Finally an expansive biography of one of the twentieth century’s greatest music and cultural icons

From noted author and rock ’n’ roll journalist Marc Spitz comes a major David Bowie biography to rival any other. Following Bowie’s life from his start as David Jones, an R & B—loving kid from Bromley, England, to his rise to rock ’n’ roll aristocracy as David Bowie, Bowie recounts his career but also reveals how much his music has influenced other musicians and forever changed the landscape of the modern era. Along the way, Spitz reflects on how growing up with Bowie as his soundtrack and how writing this definitive book on Bowie influenced him in ways he never expected, adding a personal dimension that Bowie fans and those passionate about art and culture will connect with and that no other bio on the artist offers.

Bowie takes an in-depth look at the culture of postwar England in which Bowie grew up, the mod and hippie scenes of swinging London in the sixties, the sex and drug-fueled glitter scene of the early seventies when Bowie’s alter-ego Ziggy Stardust was born, his rise to global stardom in the eighties and his subsequent status as an elder statesman of alternative culture.

Marc Spitz is the author of How Soon Is Never?; Too Much, Too Late; and Nobody Likes You: Inside the Turbulent Life, Times, and Music of Green Day and coauthor with Brendan Mullen of We Got the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of L.A. Punk.

Bill Scheft, EVERYTHING HURTS novelist; DAVID LETTERMAN writer: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Hey, Mr. Media Smart Guy! Don’t ask novelist Bill Scheft any questions about writing for David Letterman... or Paul Shaffer gets it!

After twelve years touring as a stand-up comedian, Bill Scheft was hired as a monologue writer for Late Night with David Letterman in 1991. He was with the program for its last two years at NBC, then moved over to CBS in August, 1993 to work on Late Show with David Letterman. He served as head monologue writer for the Late Show until 2004,and during his 17 years with Letterman has been nominated for 15 Emmys. Which, ah, means he’s never won.

His latest and most ambitious work, Everything Hurts, was released in April, 2009. In it, self-proclaimed “self-help fraud” PhilCamp, who accidentally achieved international acclaim writing under the pseudonym Marty Fleck, tries to seek relief from his unexplained chronic pain through the aid of another self-help guru, Dr. Samuel Abrun.

In addition to his long-form fiction, Scheft is widely known for his weekly humor column, “The Show,” which appeared in Sports Illustrated for three years. A collection of his columns, The Best of The Show, was published in 2005. Before coming to Sports Illustrated, Scheft spent two and a half years at ESPN Magazine writing a similar column, called “The Monologue.”

Robert and Pam Allyn, THE SOLIE CHRONICLES co-authors: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Gordon Solie’s family and biographers wrestle Mr. Media to a draw!

Since the late 1800s, professional wrestling has turned out many high-profile stars: names such as Frank Gotch, Ed "Strangler" Lewis, Lou Thesz, Dusty Rhodes and Hulk Hogan. Perhaps one of the most well-known pro-wrestling personalities, however, wasn't even a wrestler. He was a commentator and announcer named Gordon Solie.

Famous deadpan style interviews and colorful play-by-play broadcasts of wrestling led to Gordon’s induction into the WCW Hall of Fame (Class of 1995), the NWA Hall of Fame (Class of 2006), and the WWE Hall of Fame (Class of 2008).

He is recalled in a new book, The Solie Chronicles, by his son-in-law, Robert Allyn, and daughter, Pamela Allyn.

Born Jonard Frank Labiak on January 26, 1929, Gordon began working as a page and errand boy for a Louisiana radio station while he was in the U.S. Air Force. Known to his fellow servicemen as Gordy, he would later legally change his name to Gordon Solie, a name chosen to honor his family history. In 1950, he took a job as an announcer for WEBK in Ybor City, Florida. By starting his own radio sports interview program, Gordon made key contacts in professional wrestling and stock car racing. Subsequently, Gordon Solie set a course and made a major impact on the development of professional wrestling, national auto thrill show tours, stock car racing on Florida’s Suncoast, and ultimately, as the host for the highest-rated show on the largest cable network in America.

Ray Billingsley, CURTIS daily newspaper cartoonist: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Cartoonist Ray Billingsley finally books ‘Curtis’ with Mr. Media!

The last time cartoonist Ray Billingsley was on Mr. Media Radio, he expressed his frustration with the disinterest of traditional publishers in collecting his daily comic strip, “Curtis,” in book form.

Well, Billingsley has taken matters in his own hands and is back to talk about the publication of A Boy Named Curtis. This first in a series collection begins with strips first published in 2000.

Billingsley draws from real life, and the strip has the fresh quality of situational humor, mixed with melodrama, comedy and pathos. Distributed by King Features Syndicate, “Curtis” is read in more than 250 newspapers nationwide.

The strip depicts the urban existence of Greg and Diane Wilkins, a black family that lives in a weathered brownstone. Eleven-year-old Curtis and his younger brother, Barry, are emblematic of preteens in the big city, navigating their way through adolescence and its delights and dangers.

Order A Boy Named Curtis direct from Ray Billingsley!

The Wooldridge Brothers, DAYS WENT AROUND musicians: Mr. Media Radio Interview

The Wooldridge Brothers write circles around Mr Media with new album, Days Went Around!

The Wooldridge Brothers have a new album out, Days Went Around.

After a DIY cassette grabbed the attention of REM producer Scott Litt, Scott and Brian found some music business support. They went on to put out Skeleton Keys and Star of Desire on Don’t Records (Willy Porter, Citizen King). These albums garnered them a spot at SXSW and that landed them a deal with Windswept Pacific (now Bug Music).

Star of Desire did very well in the music publishing world, and set them up for their next album. Uncovering The Sun was released in 1998 on Don't Records in the States, and Blue Rose Records in Europe. Critics liked Uncovering The Sun and again it did well in film and TV, but it never got to the general public’s ears.

In 2008, the brothers wrote a new batch of tunes and headed into the studio. The result is the fresh and classic Days Went Around.
