Teaching Our Children Healthy Eating Habits

It is very important to teach our children healthy eating habits early.  All too often parents fall prey to fast food products and mainly because we are busy or too tired to cook healthy meals or worse yet, they think their children won't like the foods presented to them.

If your children only eat the fatty foods that they love, how many nutrients are they getting from those foods?  The simple answer is next to nothing.

It is not difficult to instill healthy eating habits. Believe me, if your children refuse to eat fruits and vegetables, they will give in when they get hungry.  If you stop purchasing processed foods and have fruits and veggies available they will eat them.  The children will eat them especially if everyone else is eating them too.

As parents we must introduce a variety of foods to create healthy habits.  The child will eventually eat the fruit if there are no other choices available and in time they will enjoy them.  It may not be easy at first, especially if they have been exposed to processed or 'fast food' products, but in time this will change.  There is no problem giving these types of foods as treats but not as a staple of their diets. You may have to gradually change their eating styles.

Some ways to introduce healthier alternatives are the following:

    • bean soups, such as yummy lentil soup and if that doesn’t work make your lentil soup into a “lentil burger”
    • try making fresh bean and/or vegetable soups with some cheese sprinkled on it.  Make sure it is tasty, and not too spicy
    • homemade pancakes with wheat and only sweeten it with pure raw honey
    • fruit shakes are always well received, try adding in a carrot or romaine lettuce for added vitamins
    • tasty salads with homemade dressings….and also make faces out of the tomatoes and cucumbers and carrots.
    • add fish to the diet, salmon is always a great choice

There are so many possibilities and recipes that you can try.  Do not give up on your child because they have shown a dislike for a vegetable or fruit.  Just eat it around them and watch them ask you for a piece.  Keep offering it to them at dinnertime and ask them to eat a couple of bites.

If children eat plenty of fruits and green leafy vegetables, they are also getting their calcium requirements. You could also include some almond milk or rice milk as an alternative to whole milk if your child is lactose intolerant.

The focus is to keep introducing children to new foods so that they develop a taste for natural foods.  Their taste buds will develop into ones that will love fresh fruits and vegetables and healthier food all around.  Be patient, it won't all happen in a day but with consistency, you will succeed, in teaching your children healthy eating habits.

    MeTime.com t-shirts and more

MeTime.com is a website dedicated to helping busy women take a time-out for a little R&R everyday. You've likely heard it said, "if you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of others" but just how do you find time to take care of yourself? Me.Time.com wants to help you find that time by offering advice, articles, and even fun apparel to relax in while enjoying your "me time".

MeTime.com t-shirts and lounge pants come in a wide variety of styles, colors, and designs. I was sent a black v-neck, short-sleeved 100% cotton shirt with the "It's 5:00 Somewhere" design to review. The shirt is super soft and the fit is comfortable. It is a shirt I would wear often if it had a different design on it. Unfortunately, this particular design and saying is not my taste but I'm sure there are many who would like it. There are several very cute designs offered so everyone is sure to find one they love.

Take a little "me time" right now to check out MeTime.com for great tips on how to relax, organize your home and life, find yummy recipes, the latest fashion tips, and to shop their line of ladies tees and lounge pants.

(Disclosure - I was sent one t-shirt for review purposes. I was not paid or otherwise compensated for this review. My review reflects my honest opinion and feelings about the MeTime.com website and the t-shirt.)

Shop Safely with CyberMonday.org and AVG

The holiday season is upon us and we have a great show planned for Monday, November 23rd to help you save money and keep your sanity while shopping for the holidays!

Here are a few tips you can use now and we'll have many more on Monday's show!

    #ShopSafely with CyberMonday.org and AVG:

    -         information provided by Scott Silverman of the National Retail Federation and Shop.org & Beth Jordan of AVG

    Safety:

    -         Be sure to shop on reputable, trust-worthy sites such as CyberMonday.com and its retail partners

    -         Just as you’re more careful when shopping in busy malls during the holiday, be more careful online as well

    -         AVG offers free downloads of virus scan and link scan here: www.shop.org/shopsafely  and http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition (the free download link may be shared with readers)

    Tips:

    1.      Look for the “S” for Security: Make sure the sites you are shopping from are secure and have “HTTPS” in the URL.  The “S” ensures security.  Also, look for the padlock symbol and research shopping sites at locations such as shopzilla.com and pricegrabber.com.

    2.      Stay Current on Security Software: Make sure you have the latest virus protection software updates from your provider before you start your holiday shopping.

    3.      Think Before You Link: Employ a URL scanning tool to ensure you’re not clicking on links that lead to infected websites.  Free tool here: http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

    4.      Keep Your Private Information Private: Make sure you keep your personal information private.  Create a separate e-mail account just for shopping and use a unique password.  Keep records of your online shopping by printing confirmation pages and e-mail confirmations.

    5.      Mix Up Your Passwords: Each e-mail, bank, credit card account should have a unique password.  Write them down and store them in a secure location.

These tips can all be found at www.shop.org/shopsafely

    Deals:

    -         42% of Americans will buy at least one gift online this holiday season.  Online sales are expected to increase about eight percent this holiday season while overall retail sales are expected to fall one percent.

    Why people spend online:

    -         the ability to shop at all hours of the day

    -         easier to compare prices

    -         free shipping

    -         convenience

    -         avoiding crowds

    -         easier to find items

CyberMonday.com aggregates the best deals from their 600 retail partners, all on one site.

    -         deals of the hour on Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be found at CyberMonday.com

    -         you can find sites offering free shipping by choosing “free shipping offers” on the top right of the site

    -         the site also contains a “Deal of the Week,” special offers, and coupons

    Giveaways:

Day 15 of the "Change Your Body in 30 Days" Challenge with Earth Footwear Exer-Walk Shoes

Day 15 on the Journey to a Fitter, Healthier Me!

    MomRN Earth Footwear shoes
    EarthFootwear,MomRN
Just over two weeks ago I received a pair of Exer-Walk shoes by Earth Footwear to use while participating in their "Change Your Body in 30 Days" Challenge. Several bloggers were asked to give the shoes a try and post our experiences with the shoes and any changes we see in our bodies as a result of wearing them. I was honored to be included in this challenge and to be given the opportunity to try the Kalso Negative Heel Technology, which is supposed to help you burn 4 times the calories while walking and exercising.

As a woman who has struggled with weight issues for the past several years, I have been looking for healthy ways to increase my fitness level and lose weight. The thought of burning 4 times as many calories while not having to increase the intensity or duration of my normal workouts sounds like a dream come true! I was skeptical before trying the shoes myself, but now that I have been wearing them for a couple of weeks, I get it. The negative heel requires you to use more energy while walking than normal walking shoes. I can feel the difference in my foot, ankle, calf, thighs and glutes.

In case you're wondering if the use of foot, ankle, and calf, in the singular form was a typo, then I should tell you that I am a below-knee amputee and wear a prosthetic limb. Research has shown that amputees who are missing a lower limb use twice as much energy and consume 40% more oxygen when walking and exercising than non-amputees. So you'd think I'd be skinny, right? ;) Well, unfortunately, that is not the case - yet. I'm on my way and I do believe that my new Exer-Walk shoes can help me achieve my goal.

To be honest, I was worried that I would not be able to walk in them. Due to my right knee being unable to fully extend (straighten), I already have a slight natural "negative heel" effect on my right side. I was afraid the Kalso Negative Heel and the "MomRN Negative Heel" combination would be too much and I'd take one step and fall flat on my face. But I was willing to risk it because I was so excited to find a product that I could incorporate into my daily life that would help me get into better shape. I'm thrilled that not only can I walk in the shoes, I can even dance and rock out at not one, but TWO rock concerts in the past couple of days while wearing them. My foot did get a little sore from standing still for too long during slow songs, but then I found that the negative heel is great for rocking back and forth or bouncing up and down, which we did a lot of at the shows! I feel like I got two workouts in all while enjoying two fun concerts. Sweet!

All in all, I am very impressed with the Exer-Walk shoes by Earth Footwear and would highly recommend them. The shoes are beautiful, which is always nice, and they really seem to be working for me. They will be available in stores in January, but you don't have to wait that long to check out all the other great shoes by Earth Footwear.

Learn more about Earth Footwear shoes at:
    <a href="http://www.earthfootwear.com">

(Disclosure: I was given a pair of Exer-Walk shoes for the challenge but I have not been paid or otherwise compensated for my review. My review reflects my honest opinion of this product.)

    National Adoption Month

November is National Adoption Month. MomRN has been asked to spread the word about the importance and benefits of adoption from foster care. Please visit AdoptUsKids (http://www.adoptuskids.org) to learn more about foster care and adoption.

The mission of AdoptUsKids is to recruit and connect foster and adoptive families with waiting children throughout the United States. Funded by the Children’s Bureau of the Administration for Children and Families, the national photolisting website contains photos and information about children in foster care. A national adoption public service advertising recruitment campaign was launched in July 2004 in a partnership of the Children’s Bureau, the Ad Council, and AdoptUsKids, with the goal of raising awareness of the significant number of children in this country waiting to be adopted. New PSAs have been developed as an extension of this highly successful campaign. The latest series of ads in this award-winning campaign target the African American community, in keeping with the effort to diligently recruit from communities representative of the children in care. Thirty-one percent of the children in foster care waiting to be adopted are African American; African American children are overrepresented in the foster care population relative to their percentage in the U.S. general population. Because of this, African American children often wait longer to be adopted.

Please visit http://www.adoptuskids.org/adoption-and-foster-care-advocacy/ to learn more about adoption from foster care and how to help spread the word about children in care waiting for a forever family. You can search for children in your area by visiting: http://www.adoptuskids.org/Child/ChildSearch.aspx.

If you are on Twitter, I recommend you follow @perfectparent (http://twitter.com/perfectparent or http://twitter.com/adoptuskids) and become a fan of AdoptUsKids on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/AdoptUsKids.

Finally, there was a Twitter event at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 10th to discuss the benefits of adoption, and provide information on adoption from foster care. Search the hashtag #adoptuskids to read the information posted during the event.

This campaign is brought to you by Global Influence, the former Momfluence network. MomRN is proud to be a member of Global Influence to bring you important information and ways to get involved in making a difference in the world around us.
