Cynematic and Donna Schwartz Mills planned to talk about public health - but that was before Monday's tragedy at Navy Yard, which reminded the MOMocrats that random gun violence is also a public health issue.

A more traditional public health topic is vaccinations: A recent measles outbreak in a Texas community was in the news last week as an illustration of what life was like before the development of safe, effective vaccinations against childhood diseases. The fact that most of us have no memory of children in leg braces or living in iron lungs is testament to the success of public health campaigns to vaccinate. But fears of dangerous side effects have put this most basic public health initiative in danger, as the Texas case illustrates.

The MOMocrats are joined in the second half hour by  are joined by Dr. Siobhan Dolan, medical advisor to the March of Dimes and Chloe Jeffreys, a labor and delivery RN whose blog was part of last month's Blogust promotion, which raised vaccine funds for the UN's Shot@Life initiative.
