Our very special guest this week is Claire Conner, author of Wrapped in the Flag: A Personal History of America's Radical Right (disclosure: link contains MOMocrats' Amazon affiliate code).
Conner's parents were leaders of the John Birch Society.
"In the 1960's, the John Birch Society was the largest, most effective and most powerful radical right wing group in the United States," Claire says.
"They developed many of the techniques the radical right uses today. They were the first right wing organization to use mass activity directed at specific outcomes. So, just like the Tea Party focused on Obamacare, the John Birch Society invented the concept of getting all of their membership moving in the same direction. So in that sense, they really are the grandfather of today's Tea Party. They also are the grandfather of today's Tea Party in terms of ideology."
