The suicide rate in the US is growing. From 1999 to 2010, the suicide rate among Americans, aged - 35 to 64 increased nearly 30 percent. The largest increases were among men in their 50s, a rates rising near 50 percent, or 30 per 100,000. For women aged 60 to 64, rates rose 60 percent to 7.0 per 100,000.

Suicidal intentions are prompted by a desperate need for relief from intensely painful feelings. Usually by the time a person gets to the stage of thinking about suicide as an option they are not able to evaluate their options in an objective manner.
