The Real Origin of American Racism

Join Alex Primo and Asha Zuri as we explore and examine the sinister origins of American racism. Where did it come from. Why was it created? What is the endgame? All of these questions will be discussed and dissected Thursday April 13, 2017 at 9 pm EST (8 CST, 7 MST, 6 PST). Before we get started, let's be sure we understand what racism is? According to Nicki Lisa Cole, Ph.D. "Racism refers to a variety of practices, beliefs, social relations, and phenomena that work to reproduce a racial hierarchy and social structure that yield superiority, power, and privilege for some, and discrimination and oppression for others. Racism takes representational, ideological, discursive, interactional, institutional, structural, and systemic forms. But despite its form, at its core, racism exists when ideas and assumptions about racial categories are used to justify and reproduce a racial hierarchy and racially structured society that unjustly limits access to resources, rights, and privileges on the basis of race."

Now that we understand what it is, when did it come to be this way? "The ancients did accept the institution of slavery as a fact of life; they made ethnocentric judgments of other societies; they had narcissistic canons of physical beauty," writes Howard University professor Frank Snowden in his book Before Color Prejudice. "Yet nothing comparable to the virulent color prejudice of modern time existed in the ancient world. This is the view of most scholars who have examined the evidence."
