"What about the Irish slaves?" We've all heard it, whether directly or indirectly. You know how it goes. Someone brings up slavery in the U.S. and the horrors kidnapped Africans went through. Before you get a chance to talk about its lasting effects throughout the generations and even to present day descendants (post traumatic slave syndrome), a white person brings up Irish slaves.
We all know why this is done-- it is an attempt to derail the conversation. It usually doesn't work despite the white person insisting the Irish slaves went through the same horrors as kidnapped Africans, sometimes alongside them. Most of know that's NOT true. But, what did the Irish slaves go through?
Another ignorant response thrown out there, in these conversations, "There was slavery in Africa before Europeans showed up. So, we were just continuing it." Sooooo much misinformation in one statement!
This Thursday, hosts Alex Primo and Asha Zuri will discuss "slavery" in Africa, detail Irish slavery, contrast it with chattel slavery, and talk about its effects through the years, up to today. There are behaviors we do today that stem from our ancestors' reactions during slavery.
