Beyond being an award winning activist, Mike is an author, filmmaker, radio host, and owner of a 95% renewable energy house in Takoma Park, MD. Mike’s house is equipped with energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs and is powered by photovoltaic solar panels, a solar hot-water system, and a corn-burning home-heating stove. Young people can have a substantial positive impact on the global energy and climate crisis. Adam Schwartz is an eco-entrepreneur, educator, community organizer, and social justice advocate who believes that educating and empowering youth is key to inspiring community adoption of clean energy. Adam is the Co-founder and President of the Green Guild Biodiesel Cooperative, a non-profit based in Riverdale, MD that produces and uses biodiesel as a teaching tool to educate Washington DC area youth and community members about climate change and the energy crisis. Through the startup of the Green Guild Biodiesel Coop, Adam has developed infrastructure, sustainability demonstrations and built a network of biodiesel users and enthusiasts throughout the DC area. Join Maryland Clean Energy Today as we talk with Adam about how youth education and community-scale renewable energy demonstrations can promote the growth of clean energy solutions throughout Maryland and the nation.

Joanna Calabrese and Davie Rodner are emblematic of the college-aged clean energy movers and shakers taking action in Maryland and around the country. Their efforts are changing how the massive University of Maryland System does business. They are co-founders of the UM For Clean Energy student group and the UM System Clean Energy Coalition. They have also engaged in lobbying in Annapolis for the Global Warming Solutions Act. Last semester they helped run the Power Vote campaign at UMD, which helped mobilize over 300,000 young people nationwide to pledge their vote for “clean and just energy” in the 2008 elections.
