Ghetto TV. The discussion about the images of black people in the media has been around for some time. The only that changes is the name of the show that raises our ire. In the 90’s most of the attention went to BET. Now with VH1 and Bravo pushing “reality” TV, it comes now if the form of ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ and ‘Flava of Love’. So what’s the real deal and how should we feel about these shows? Are they a reflection of us or just a reflection of the individuals involved? Beyond TV, we will discuss the responsibility of media companies to portray black people in a particular image or not depict certain caricatures of black people. How should black-owned media display black image and where does the balance come into play with regards to profits and social responsibility.
