In January, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission voted 3-2 to effectively require U.S. corporations to disclose any climate-related risks or opportunities that might have a "material effect" on their businesses. Calculating environmental risks hasn't been commonplace in corporate America, but the SEC ruling promises to change that. It may also re-invigorate the concept of long-term planning, which will be good for America's economy and an essential for tackling complex issues such as climate change.
