Call in to speak with the host
I will talk with Mary Mackey about her work as a Speech Language Pathologist with special needs children.
I will discuss my own experience raising two children on the Autism Spectrum. My daughter was diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) in 2009 when she was 3 years old. My son received the same diagnosis in 2010 when he was 2 years old. Since then, as a stay-at-home father, I have dealt with Early Intervention, Speech Language Pathologists, and Advanced Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapists in my house while my kids received speech therapy and social services through the Brookline School District. They are now normal children, ages 7 and 4, and you would never think they started with the diagnosis of PDD-NOS.
I will discuss the labeling of Autism as a "disorder" and how we can shift our perception of "spcial needs" to "special abilities" and "superior abilities."
I will talk about my familiarity with Asperger's Syndrome because I probably would have been dignosed with Asperger's Syndrome when I was in my late teens and early 20s.
It's good to talk.
