Da Coconut Wireless - Station ALOHA!

Beliefs ... dogma ... doctrina ... religion ... all of these terms strive to constrain as much as they try to define a person's spirituality. In my world, spirituality begins with your spirit self ... Uhane nui 'au ... Spirit Greatness. If you do not love yourself enough to know your self, trust your gut to tell you the truth in each and every moment, then you are not Pono ... not centered and not in harmony ... and cannot be a competent navigator of your canoe ... your true self as you negotiate your way, moment to moment, through he wai o ke 'ola, the Waters of Life. Once you master living in the moment, then it is vital to the survival of the people to work together as one 'Ohana ... through the practices of Laulima, the definition of "community" and Kokua, freely helping your neighbor -- taken together, we call this approach malama ka 'aina ... because we, as a People, cannot be the competent caretakers of Ka 'Aina, Mother Earth, and her Oceans, Ka Makai, without first achieving Lokahi ... Unity ... within our 'Ohana that is humankind. One Island cared for by One 'Ohana ... that is our responsibility, our charge, if we are to live pono ... righteously ... together and in perpetuity. That is the way of living the Aloha Spirit ... and the buzz at Da Coconut Wireless! My halau, 'Aha Hui Lanakila™, is dedicated to expanding your mind with skills and knowledge to empower your spirit to abundantly manifest your healing intentions through ways of Aloha. In learning these valuable navigational skills, you achieve a more meaningful journey through the biggest ocean out there ... Life!

The Importance of 'Ohana In Achieving Lokahi

    Aloha kakou, Ho'aloha ...
Greetings, friends, from me and every being within my Circle to you and each and every being within your respective Circles ...

Most every person who has seen Disney's Lilo & Stitch movies and cartoons can parrot back the phrase, "'Ohana means that nobody gets left behind." That is a humorous sliver of the concept's true meaning. So what, then, is 'Ohana?

With your permission ... 'Ohana is the Hawaiian word for "family and relatives" derived from the Hawaiians' spiritual connection with Kalo, the taro plant. (Kalo being the brother of our Mother and Father creators.) 'Ohana consists of everyone related by blood, marriage and adoption (hanai); this includes pets. 'Ohana also includes deceased ancestors from whom the family members are descended. For the ancient Hawaiians, the meaning of 'ohana is rooted within Hawaiian society's land division system, the ahupua'a.

The ahupua'a was a strip of land that went up a mountainside all the way down to the sea. Ownership, that is, the ability to work the land and fish the waters within a particular ahupua'a was assigned by a Hawaiian ali'i (chief) to several families per division. In this way, all families in a village had equal opportunities to sustain themselves. The families who farmed the mountainside of the ahupua'a were able to grow Kalo, fruits and vegetables and hunt for wild boar, but did not have ready access to the fish and the sea. Likewise, the families who lived close to shore were able to fish daily, but did not have ready access or ability to farm land or hunt wildlife. Thus, families cooperated with one another and supported each other's efforts in the ahupua'a by a system of laulima (working together as a community) and by kokua (helping your neighbors). Thus, 'ohana who lived in the uplands and 'ohana who lived in the lowlands would exchange products with each other. Such exchanges of food and supplies were recognized in an old saying "ko kula uka, ko kula kai," "those of the uplands, those of the sea" -- as above, so below.

As an island people, the Hawaiians live with one foot on the land and one foot in the ocean. This duality formed the character, values, technology, economy, culture and spirituality of the kanaka maoli (ancient Hawaiian ancestors) and continues to influence Hawaiians today. The ahupua'a serves both as a symbol and a system of how people should relate to the environment and other life forms which live in that environment, as well as how people should relate to each other. In this way, the needs of the people for food, shelter, clothing, tools, recreation and spiritual sustenance were met.

In order to survive within the ahupua'a, the people had to develop appropriate technology which would help achieve a sustainable level of development for that ahupua'a. The people could not overfish, over-harvest, or raise more animals than the land could sustain ... to do otherwise would lead to the destruction of the entire village.

Today, however, we live in a world which neither practices, nor recognizes, the value of the ahupua'a philosophy and system of sustainable development and self-sufficiency. The "modern" concern is that the economy is less accountable to social and cultural values and, without community-based efforts to ensure accountability, the values themselves will continue to be eroded.

It is my humble opinion that it is not the economy that is less accountable, my friends ... it is us, as a People. The human race has become less accountable to each other and now our Island's resources are depleting at an alarming rate.

In response to our present condition, I am calling for a more holistic approach to living, an approach that encompasses the physical, the intellectual and the spiritual. The irony is that this is not a new approach to living and growth, but it is part of an ancient Hawaiian one: the ahupua'a system.

My mission is to support and continue the advancement of Hawaiian culture through its language, the hula, the chants and revisiting oral history tales, to contribute to the continuation of the Hawaiian culture through practicing and developing the Hawaiian work ethic and value system. In this way, we bring all aspects of the world -- environmental, spiritual and astral -- back into harmony, Pono, through unity together, Lokahi.

It is only through Lokahi efforts that we will be able to meet the challenges facing our island, Mother Earth. And, it is through practicing 'Ohana that we will live Pono lives and realize Lokahi.

Malama pono kakou ... brightest blessings from me and all of my 'Ohana to each and every one of you and your respective 'Ohana.

E ku i ka mana kakou,
    Lana

    Is Hawai'i For You?

I am reproducing the text of my emailed response to someone who told me that she is sad and lost that she (a native Texan) can't relocate to Hawai'i because of the derogatory impression "haoli" folks appear to garner when in the Islands.  I hope my response works to enlighten you all ... I despise the derogatory use of the term "haoli," mainly because its modern usage is wrong on so many fronts ... none the least of which is that it offends the very premise of Aloha Spirit:

Ignore what you've heard and go with your gut ... if your heart is in the right place, the locals will feel it and know you are for real. That is the truth of it.

What you heard is that there is reverse discrimination in Hawai'i ... the brown folks are the majority and it is literally "the shoe on the other foot" on the Island. Well, that is true to a degree, but it isn't a profound, unilateral truth. Why? The truth is that everyone that does not have Native Hawaiian blood running through their veins is a Haoli ... a visitor, a stranger, a traveller ... present in the Islands. Another truth is that in Hawaiian culture, it is customary to hanai ... adopt ... a person not related to you into your Ohana. Young, modern Hawaiians (and there are less than 800 pure-bloods left, so you do the math!) seem to forget about that aspect of Hawaiian spirituality and tradition. Unfortunately, the term "haoli" has come to be derogatory and applied mainly to Caucasian folks due to the historical legacy left by the money-grabbing, Monarchy-annihilating missionaries of the 1800s.

Quite frankly, I don't believe you adhere to what those missionaries did or adhere to their racist/elitist way of thinking ... and I suspect that your desire to move to Hawai'i is rooted in the Mana that eminates from the Islands. Yes?

If so, then that is the only valid reason that you should go to Hawai'i because somewhere in your Spirit's past, you had a connection to the energies in that part of the world. You should always follow your gut and you should always follow that inner voice with unconditional love in your heart. No pre-conceived notions. No intentions of bringing Texas to Hawai'i. Just a desire to be one with the land and the People of Hawai'i. Aloha Spirit has no race, no nationality, no color ... it is Unconditional Love without emotional baggage. There is a truth for you to contemplate.

So, my friend, do not continue to feel lost and sad. There is no need to be in Po, the dark place. You need to huli your bowl and go to Hawai'i and just BE there. You know what it's like to judge others shortsightedly ... I'm certain you've experienced that for yourself at the hands of others less kind and terribly arrogant. All any of us from Hawai'i ask of you is this:

Respect Ka 'Aina, the land, and Ka Makai, its oceans ... never take them for granted, because we, Hawai'i's people, are charged with the duty and responsibility of caring for Her. Respect the Hawaiian culture and honor the people by learning all you can about Hawaiian history, gain an appreciation for the language, and understand and live the paradigm of Ka Hana Pono. It's not such a tall order, really. You just don't want to be looked upon like any other tourist traveling there to ogle, to make fun of the food, the names and the language and, ultimately, the people. Nothing wrong with that sentiment at all ... matter of fact, it's maika'i ... it is good ... therefore, it is also Pono (righteous).

President-elect Barack Obama is one of Hawai'i's sons ... he was born in Honolulu, educated in Hawaiian schools and represents the Aloha Spirit in action in many profound ways that the American people as a whole are discovering, and applauding. We are all terribly proud of him and his Light because we all believe that it is the way of Aloha that will help turn America, and this world, around for the better.

If we, as members of the human race, can all strive to do That Which Is Right, rather than retreat to that which is easy, our world might have a chance at survival. After all, my friend, we are all One Ohana. But, to make it work, we must walk our talk of Spirit Greatness ... in Hawaiian, we say it as "hele ka 'olelo i ka uhane nui au." I will be talking more about Ka Hana Pono in the days and weeks to come, so I invite you to always join me under my Bannion tree to listen to the legacy that is the Hawaiian paradigm of living the Aloha Spirit. It truly is a beautiful world view, and one that is as pragmatic as it is all-encompassing. I had the privilege of learning these things as a child, which allowed me to process those ideals and finally apply them to my daily living. With your permission, I can show you the way.

You akamai? You understand what I'm saying to you? :)

Keep in touch, and after reading what I'm all about, both here and on my website, and reflecting on what I've said to you here, if you still want to join us in Hawai'i, I think you should follow your gut and relocate. If you love nature the way we on the Island do, you will find more than enough reasons to remain happy there. Do not project the negative ... stay in the moment, live in the moment, and you will always be Pono ... and that, my friend, you can't fake. The locals will pick up on your Aloha Spirit and embrace your friendship and company openly.

Malama pono kau'a, my friend ... please stay in touch and thank you for visiting me and listening to Da Coconut Wireless on BTR. Do check out my website: if you are in agreement with what I've said there, then you're well on your way to fitting in nicely in Hawai'i.

A hui hou ... Until the next time,

    Lana

    About Lana, Your Host

    Aloha pumehana kakou!

Warm greetings to you and to all who are in your Circle!

I am a second-generation, American-born Filipino woman who grew up as a latch-key kid on military bases all over the Navy’s Western Pacific Rim tour – The Philippines; Okinawa; Guam; Japan; Hawai’i, Seattle’s Puget Sound Bay Area and finally the San Francisco Bay Area.

During my impressionable years at Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary School, my teachers meticulously taught the detailed history of the Hawaiian islands, its people and the many concepts and values that describe the Hawaiian spiritual paradigm, in addition to reading, writing and arithmetic. Their teachings became a major influence in my life. One notable story I always remember is about the Hawaiian Sea Tern and how they are the vessels that embody our Spirit selves. I admire this bird because no matter how many miles it flies out to sea to forage for food, it always manages to find its way back to land before nightfall. Similarly, I view my life experiences as the sum total of many different outings in my canoe onto the waters of life in search of sustenance in the form of obtaining Clarity in one form or another. I reach land when I acknowledge the lesson learned, with gratitude. For these reasons, I adopted the Hawaiian sea tern, Ka 'Iwi, as one of my personal ‘aumakua, a spirit guardian.

I am an Intuitive Healer, Hawaiian shaman and Reiki Grandmaster and use these skills to augment my energy workings to assist others. I work with individuals who suffer from anxiety and depression by teaching meditation, meditational breathing and relaxation skills. I incorporate over twenty years of studying alternative medicine modalities, i.e., Hawaiian la'au lapa'au (herbal medicine), EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), reflexology/shiatsu, crystalwork, Wiccan Hedgewitchery and hands-on Reiki healing in my Energyworking practice.

A shaman is an original researcher working in the sciences of religion and magick for the purposes of advancing humanity's knowledge of the correct (i.e., most effective) ways of having meaningful direct communication with deities, spirits and non-physical beings in their natural planes, states, or conditions. For example, I blend my understanding of herbal and floral essences with my knowledge of quantum physics and geomagnetics to create an energy bridge that nurtures balance and harmony within a person's being. Ka Hana Pono is my spiritual paradigm. It is my daily practice of being Pono, or living balanced, by always living in the moment. "Balance" and "harmony" are further defined within this framework as I continue to communicate with you on BTR.

I have a special affinity for healing others using the electromagnetic energies generated by crystals. I am able to locate dis-ease and im-balance that is rooted deep within a person's psyche and heal its physical manifestation. I have researched the properties of hundreds of crystals and minerals and add to that list regularly on my website.

I promote the depth and richness that is the heritage of Pacific Islanders, of whom Filipinos and Hawaiians are culturally, spiritually and genetically related. In sharing knowledge handed down to me, I hope to help others discover/rediscover a richness in culture that continues to contribute to the vitality of the Island called Mother Earth. In this way, stories will be perpetuated and knowledge remembered.

    A hui hou,

    Lana
