Da Coconut Wireless - Station ALOHA!

Beliefs ... dogma ... doctrina ... religion ... all of these terms strive to constrain as much as they try to define a person's spirituality. In my world, spirituality begins with your spirit self ... Uhane nui 'au ... Spirit Greatness. If you do not love yourself enough to know your self, trust your gut to tell you the truth in each and every moment, then you are not Pono ... not centered and not in harmony ... and cannot be a competent navigator of your canoe ... your true self as you negotiate your way, moment to moment, through he wai o ke 'ola, the Waters of Life. Once you master living in the moment, then it is vital to the survival of the people to work together as one 'Ohana ... through the practices of Laulima, the definition of "community" and Kokua, freely helping your neighbor -- taken together, we call this approach malama ka 'aina ... because we, as a People, cannot be the competent caretakers of Ka 'Aina, Mother Earth, and her Oceans, Ka Makai, without first achieving Lokahi ... Unity ... within our 'Ohana that is humankind. One Island cared for by One 'Ohana ... that is our responsibility, our charge, if we are to live pono ... righteously ... together and in perpetuity. That is the way of living the Aloha Spirit ... and the buzz at Da Coconut Wireless! My halau, 'Aha Hui Lanakila™, is dedicated to expanding your mind with skills and knowledge to empower your spirit to abundantly manifest your healing intentions through ways of Aloha. In learning these valuable navigational skills, you achieve a more meaningful journey through the biggest ocean out there ... Life!

The Origins of Ka Hana Pono

It is undisputed that the ancient Hawaiians were among the greatest navigators of Polynesia and traveled vast distances that would have made their Marquesan ancestors proud. The ancient Hawaiians navigated the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean with a substantial knowledge base about prevailing ocean winds, currents, moods of the sea and recognition of signs and other portents of changes in weather. They paddled simple, single-mast outrigger canoes, the greatest of which were frail, diminutive craft in comparison to the larger European merchant ships. They crossed hemispheres of ocean before reaching Hawaiian shores. Their pioneer spirits burned brightly against tempestuous ocean waves, tricky undercurrents and maelstroms swirling around the Islands' channels.

Indeed, the kanaka maoli overcame fear of the unknown each time they collectively dared to make increasingly longer ocean voyages, seeking out opportunities beyond native horizons and familiar star patterns. And so, they paddled their outrigger canoes across the southern hemisphere and accomplished voyages that would make any modern seafarer hesitate to commit to replicate. What makes the ancient Hawaiians great navigators is the fact that they never used a compass, chart, spyglass, sextant or chronometer to plot or navigate their course. Rather, they relied upon ancient family maxims and a spiritual value system handed down through generations of oral history-memory, blended with their extensive seafaring knowledge of wind, sea and sky. They traveled with the determination of the Hawaiian 'iwi (sea tern), that is, no matter how far away the journey took them across ocean waters, they always knew they would make land at journey's end. They kept paddling each day and knew that steady pace would eventually get them back to shore. In this manner, the Polynesians populated every habitable rock and coral island in an area of ocean greater than a continent.

The kanaka maoli, as originators of the idea of Pono and its practice, lived in a world that was essentially tiny bits of land surrounded by a vast expanse of ocean. Theirs was an island culture, and their language - an engaging and poetic series of verbal symbols - contained their belief system encoded in its every word.

Hawaiians live by the phrase he wai o ke ola, which means the waters of life. This metaphor expresses the understanding that life is not static. It is dynamic, fluid. Like the ocean, life is constantly changing. It is a huge, overpowering and awesome force. Hawaiians understand that people really cannot hope to live for any extended time in the ocean. Sure, you can surf out there, swim out there and survive for a brief period of time. But, unless you had a canoe, a good solid boat beneath you, you could not survive for any length of time in the ocean. It’s just too big with enormous swells, which is why the Hawaiians respected the ocean. So, too, do Hawaiians feel similarly about life because it is just too big, too variable and too unpredictable, so you make sure you conduct yourself with a strong sense of direction. That’s why Hawaiians say that when you’re pono, you’re in 'da canoe.

Pono is the safe and reassuring state of being connected to Spirit and to your higher self, 'uhane nui au, Spirit Greatness -- your divine source of personal power. Pono doesn’t describe situations in life: it focuses on reactions to life's situations.

Hawaiians recognize their Divine Source, their Navigator, to be 'uhane nui au, each person's sense of Spirit Greatness. Projecting one's Spirit Greatness means to socially relate to others with Aloha Spirit, that is, with unconditional love. The Hawaiian approach to living with Aloha Spirit is Ka Hana Pono -- the daily practice of staying in Pono. To be in Pono means to be physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy. The result is harmony in being.

Viewed another way:  Life’s circumstances are like the waves, that is, life is constantly in motion. Waves go up and down, back and forth; swirling, calm, or black and stormy. They are whatever they are at a given moment.

Being Pono is like being and staying in the canoe. You’re riding the waves, safe in your own space inside the canoe, no matter what the sea is doing around you. It’s clearly black and white. You’re either in the canoe - in pono - or you’re not. We always know when we’re pono. We know when we’re reacting to life in a calm, connected manner. We also know when we’re not connected. No one has to tell us when we fall out of the canoe. We’re all freaked out: minds racing, hearts pounding, our guts clenched in knots ... survival mode, what the Hawaiians characterize as the seaweed entangled in your rudder, pilikia, the opposite of pono. Ka Hana Pono offers a way for you to shift out of pilikia and back into pono. It’s designed to help get you back into your canoe so that you can complete your journey and make land once again.

Before Huna, There Is Ka Hana Pono

At the heart of modern Huna is the ancient Hawaiian spirituality that is the people's legacy ... Ka Hana Pono, the daily practice of living righteously, harmoniously, with yourself, others and the world around you.

When we are born, our spirits are joyous and our minds are free. Hawaiians equate this free state of being as a shining "bowl of light," or
    'uhane nui au, Spirit Greatness.

However, as we go through our lives, we learn fear. We become afraid to follow our hearts, afraid to be true to ourselves. And, each fear we hold onto becomes a rock inside the bowl. We second-guess, which often leads to mistakes, and more rocks put into the bowl. The more mistakes or negative experiences we encounter, the more we doubt our choices and fear more for consequences ... and allow even more rocks to get into the bowl. We become afraid to trust that the Universe will provide for us, if only we let it. Now, the bowl is full of rocks and can no longer reflect the light of your Spirit Greatness.

The solution: huli the bowl ... tip it over and empty the rocks out of your bowl to reflect once again the light of your Spirit Greatness!

So, if we then seek mana iho (boundless self-empowerment) by choosing to own the power of choice, we enable ourselves to let go of fear and surround ourselves with the powerful white energy of compassion. You heal yourself by expressing gratitude for all that makes you a spiritual being. Fear is replaced with unconditional love. And, unconditional love is another way of describing the Aloha Spirit. The Mind (mana'o) and Heart (pu'uwai) are in a balanced state of calm and, therefor, open to listening to Spirit ('Uhane) guiding all choices from within.

When we actively integrate compassion into daily living, we stop struggling in fear, because we know that we are following our True Path, that we are exactly where we are supposed to be in this moment ... i keia manawa. This peaceful state of being defines being Pono. When you are Pono, your creativity will flow without effort: your inner beauty and light will shine through and all will see you as that shining Bowl of Light i ka 'uhane nui au ... you, as Spirit Greatness, paddling in your canoe ... full sail!

More about Ka Hana Pono to come ... so stay tuned.  Aloha pumehana e malama pono kakou:  malama your Ohana ... malama each other ... malama your pets ... malama Your Self!

A hui hou ... Until the next time,

    Lanakilaonakupuna

    (but please, call me Lana)
