One thing that truth always upsets is the status quo. That, partly, is why the truth is always unwelcome.
Now, truth is powerful in itself, able to draw honest souls to itself by its virtue alone. The status quo, by way of contrast, derives what power it has from popularity; as long as people believe the way things are indeed are how they should be, the status quo remains.
When the status quo is assaulted by truth, it is remarkable the lengths to which status quo defenders will go, not only to resist truth personally, but also ensure others neither hear nor believe it.
