The New Birth is wonderful. The forgiveness of sins and new-found fellowship with God and His people represent a new start and the opportunity to leave past problems behind. However, walking away from old sins does not, in and of itself, prevent old sinning. There is a difference between the New Birth and a new life! Consider dandelions. Anyone who’s tried to keep a lawn free of them knows that mowing them and even pulling them up does not guarantee their removal. Getting rid of what you can see won’t kill a dandelion – you must go deeper. Something must penetrate the ground to a depth that is longer than the plant’s root before there is confidence that the dandelion has been removed, never to return. And so it is with our sins. While repentance, baptism, and forgiveness take care of the sins which did appear, they often do not get to the root of sin. The Holy Ghost is equipped to penetrate our hearts to a depth deeper than the root of sin. Unfortunately, the heart is a difficult place from which to remove anything. So are you still struggling with old sinning, even after the New Birth has taken away your old sins? Then may be we need to ask, “Did You Go Deep Enough To Fix It?”
