Women Making a Difference w/Itiel McVay

    HI Everyone-
    Here's info from today's show:
Is Itiel not one of the coolest people ever?  Seriously...

    Her gems of wisdom include:
"Embrace your power of being a woman"  (yea!  be a girly girl...and enjoy it!)
"Wake up every morning & TOOT your own horn!  Know that you CAN do it, that you ARE special and that you CAN accomplish what you set out to do"!  (wow...makes you want to go out and change the world, doesn't it....).

Itiel donates a lot of time/money to grass-roots orgs that help empower girls, whether it's through products for events or $$ from the Passport to Paradise coupon book or the Stay Sweet collection of product/affirmations.  The Passport to Paradise is a coupon book of $120 in savings for a cost of $2!!!  Book is a pdf file that is downloaded right to your computer.  With EVERY purchase made using the Passport to Paradise, a $1 is donated to one of the organizations that Itiel works with.  How cool is that?

Women Making a Difference w/Kathy Stevens

    Hi All-
Did you have a kleenex handy today like I did?  good grief...

"EVERY heart deserves a chance to sing!"-Kathy Stevens

I don't know about you all, but I started to cry about minute 9...Buddy the blind horse did me in...to smell freedom he never knew & to have the trust to gallop w/out being able to see the road he traveled...We can all take a lesson here.  (Read about Buddy & Kathy in Kathy's book: The Blind Horse Sings....click on the book title on episode page).

I loved when Kathy shared her "a-ha" moment with us....A teacher for over a decade, gets her chance to become principal.  Following on her what-she-thought was her career path...she surprised herself in turning down the job!  After a few months of meditation, writing & talking to friends, she realized her passion was the day-to-day interaction w/the kids...and she wouldn't have that as principal.  After this revelation, she pondered HOW she could take this & her love of animals to create something truly spectacular & make a difference....Catskill Animal Sanctuary was born.

Taking in mostly abused, neglected farm animals "found" in Manhattan, Brooklyn & Central Park (although the animals come from all over), Kathy has created a sanctuary of peace, free from fear, for these animals to heal & come into their own.  And YES, all animals have their own distinct personalities.  From Barbie, the now free-range hen who stalked Rambo, the male sheep, much to the dismay of Hanna a female sheep, to the former "champion" cock-fighting rooster who know chases you down to go for car rides & go to yoga class...all of these animals and more will make you laugh, cry & realize that "all hearts & living beings" do feel pain, experience joy & serve a purpose.

***While I'm not saying that eating animals is bad/evil/horrible...whatever, I am asking that you purchase meat responsibly.  Know where it came from & how the animals were treated.  Look for free-range, cruelty-free labeling on all meat packaging!  Stay away from animals that were "processed" in farm factories.  This goes for any consumer product, from bath/body to cosmetics.***

I hope you enjoyed hearing about the residents & inspriation behind Catskill Animal Sanctuary & Kathy's great work!  They also offer great educational programs for school kids as well!

Here's a  GREAT love story between a chicken, a sheep & a ram that was written by Kathy about 3 of the inhabitants of Catskill Sanctuary.  If you ever wondered if animals, particularly farm animals have individual personalities...this will make you think twice:

Here is the site of Catskill Animal Sanctuary to see current residents, make a donation or see what's up: http://www.casanctuary.org/

Want to learn more ways that YOU can make a difference in an abused/neglected animals life?  Click here: http://www.casanctuary.org/cas/more_help  You can also make donations of Wish List items to your local animal shelter!  I donate office products, toys & $$ to my local Humane Society...You'd be surprised at what's on the Wish Lists!

Women Making a Difference w/Toni "TQ" Quist

    HI Everyone-
    Wasn't tonite's show interesting?  I learned a lot tonite...AND was inspired by TQ's story...

Starting to paint on a suggestion by an artist aunt, after suffering many injuries from an auto accident, TQ started painting after her chiropractic appointments.  And here, Screaming Woman was started (www.screamingwoman.com).  At first TQ's paintings started out very tiny, almost art imitating life in how she was feeling after her trauma.  Her aunt encouraged her to "GO BIGGER" in her paintings, and TQ started buying larger canvases.

She is a self-taught artist, who know paints portraits & teaches what she calls (and is branding!) Self-Actualizing Portraiture.  More than "art therapy", she hopes to use this technique for those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, which she has suffered from-mainly with war vets.

Her main "gem of wisdom" for us was to make sure we all "put a piece of ourselves" into our art (whatever it may be!) to give it "soul" and make more 3 dimensional.  I LOVE this!  Make sure to visit the Screaming Woman website to view TQ's portraits at www.screamingwoman.com.  She has been exhibited in many shows, including a show in Atlanta where her portrait of James Brown was featured!

***If you can't afford an origianl, there are prints available!***

TQ is also working on a jewelry line & her Self-Actualizing Portraiture program!  Stay tuned!!

Housekeeping:  Make sure to get caught up on shows so you can vote for our Woman of the Year!!  Voting begins on 12/1-12/12 for ALL interviews done through 11/30/09.  Winner to be announced on 12/14/09. www.blogtalkradio.com/makeadifference

Women Making a Difference w/Toni "TQ" Quest

Toni Quest engages in art to express her feelings genuinely and with impact. She became an artist in 1994 after surviving a head on auto collision. Her multiple injuries left her head spinning, her boyfriend bolting, and her heart and soul screaming. While recovering at home in much physical and emotional pain, she began painting faces giving birth to her Screaming Woman ™ series. Since then, Toni Quest has licensed her award-winning painting for the book cover, View From the Middle of The Road Volume II, U.S. in Us . A selection of her poetry is also included in this anthology. In March of 2007, Quest was interviewed on Internet Voices Radio by Dr. Niama Williams. She spoke about her artwork and her recently published poetry. During May of 2006, Toni Quest’s portraits of James Brown were included in the Visual Soul Exhibition commemorating Brown’s 50 th year in show business. Quest’s work was displayed at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum in Augusta , GA before the legendary soul singer’s passing. In June and July of 2006, Quest was named one of Westchester County ’s leading new artists in the Westchester Business Journal. She was selected by the Westchester Arts Council to exhibit in their Young Emerging Artists exhibition ( YEA ) in White Plains , NY . Although most of her work has been portraiture, TQ also brings her same spirit to other subjects and incorporates it into her teaching by sharing with her students the techniques she used to teach herself. By exercising her artistic abilities, she was able to heal herself from post-trauma stress disorder, deal with physical and emotional pain, and combat Multiple Sclerosis. Through her art, TQ bears her soul as well as her affinity to the collective consciousness of human kind. Her intent is to provoke emotion and thought, thus inspiring constructive communication about one’s relationships to others and the world around us. www.screamingwoman.com
