According to the APA announcement: Men commit 90 percent of homicides in the United States and represent 77 percent of homicide victims. They’re the demographic group most at risk of being victimized by violent crime. They are 3.5 times more likely than women to die by suicide, and their life expectancy is 4.9 years shorter than women’s. Boys are far more likely to be diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder than girls, and they face harsher punishments in school—especially boys of color. =========================== Could Smartphone Apps Help Curb Teen Depression? Social media use on smartphones has been blamed for rising rates of teen depression — but those phones could help solve the problem. Psychiatrists and parents have long been worried about the psychological and emotional risks of high rates of social media use among teens, with so much time spent on their phones limiting face-to-face interaction, the development of social skills, and potentially contributing to depression and anxiety. But now, researchers are trying to find ways to use the fact that teens are on their phones so much to track possible signs of depression and intervene.   00:14:00Mainstream Mental Healthnoself help, psychology, smartphone, depression,Dr. John HuberSocial media use on smartphones has been blamed for rising rates of teen depression — but those phones could help solve the problem.Hangover Anxiety: Why You Get 'Hangxiety' After a Night of New Year's Drinkinghttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2019/01/01/hangover-anxiety-why-you-get-hangxiety-after-a-night-of-new-years-drinkingHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2019/01/01/hangover-anxiety-why-you-get-hangxiety-after-a-night-of-new-years-drinking/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2019/01/01/hangover-anxiety-why-you-get-hangxiety-after-a-night-of-new-years-drinkingTue, 01 Jan 2019 22:30:00 GMTHangover Anxiety: Why You Get 'Hangxiety' After a Night of New Year's DrinkingFor some drinkers, it’s almost as reliable as the pounding headache and queasy stomach: the feeling of dread that follows a night of heavy imbibing. Your mind races as you frantically scroll through your text messages and Instagrams, replaying what you can remember from the night before. Did I say anything embarrassing? Did I offend anyone? Do my friends hate me now? For some, these doubts are just fleeting, run-of-the-mill nerves from letting their guard down after a few too many drinks the night before. But for others, these all-encompassing thoughts aren’t just regret from drinking too much or your mind’s effort to piece together a hazy night. The overwhelming feeling of nervousness after drinking too much is an experience common enough that Reddit has devoted threads to the term: “hangxiety.” Even model Chrissy Teigen, who is known for her silly, alcohol-fueled antics on social media, revealed that she's planning on cutting back on booze after “making kind of an ass” out of herself after drinking too much. “That feeling, there's just nothing like that. You feel horrible,” she told Cosmopolitan. Turns out, there’s a physiological reason for the anxiety you feel the morning after drinking. “I think of a hangover as, more or less, a mini-withdrawal from alcohol, and anxiety is one of the components,” George F. Koob, Ph.D., director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), tells SELF. Although not everyone experiences anxiety when they're hungover—some people feel just achy or have an upset stomach—Koob says it’s a relatively common symptom of a hangover. And for people who are already prone to anxiety, it’s even worse, sometimes lasting all day and disrupting your ability to function. That's what New Year's resolutions are for — to make improvements to our lives in some way. But they are really hard to stick to. In fact, according to one statistic, 80% of us will fail by the second week of February. A valiant effort. A study from 2016 published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, a scientific journal, investigated New Year's resolutions, and found that 55% of resolutions were health related, such as exercising more, or eating healthier. About 20% were to do with getting out of debt. These are tricky things to do at any time of the year, let alone in the month after the holidays. The study, led by Kaitlin Woolley from Cornell University and Ayelet Fishbach from the University of Chicago, found that participants believe that both enjoyment and importance are significant factors in whether they stick to their resolutions. In fact, the researchers found that it was just the enjoyment factor was the only thing that mattered. In other words, if the participants were getting immediate rewards from their new habits, they would be more likely to stick to them. In 2019, try taking a break from social media or use it less. Also, when someone has a birthday instead of writing a two sentence “Happy Birthday!” line on their facebook page, call that person or see them face-to-face to tell them.  Face One Fear When we challenge ourselves and when we push out of our comfort zones, we grow. Write down a list of all of your fears (public speaking, the dark, etc) and make a concerted attempt to face one of them. When you confront fear successfully, it can affect all aspects of your life for the better as well give you a confidence boost. Reconnect  Reach out to friends, relatives or even acquaintances that you haven’t spoken with in a long time. It will make you feel good. Also, try re-taking up a hobby or an activity you enjoyed when you were younger. Reconnect to people, places, and activities that made you feel happy.  Forgive & Seek Forgiveness If someone from your past or present has hurt you, do whatever you can to take steps towards forgiving them (even if they’re not seeking forgiveness). A lot of inner anguish and pain can result from the negative emotions we feel about others. In addition to forgiving others, try to forgive yourself for things you are feeling guilty about. If you have hurt others, seek them out and tell them how sorry you are. By doing this you may not only be bringing a substantial amount of peace to them but, to you as well.    Mainstream Mental Health: http://www.mainstreammentalhealth.org/  00:06:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoNew Year's Resultions,NYE,mental health, self help, psychologySome people regularly post on social media faux versions of who they really are. A new survey calculated that Americans are enjoying just 37 minutes of “quality time” as a family on weekdays. The study, commissioned by Visit Anaheim, the tourism organization for the Southern California city, tried to quantify the cost of increasingly jam-packed schedules for American families.  After polling 2,000 parents of school-aged children, researchers found that 60% of those polled described their average, daily lives as “hectic.” A quarter of respondents admitted that lack of family time is a “problem.” --------- Survey: 6 In 10 Americans Believe They’ve Seen A Ghost Convinced that the glowing figure you saw down the hall that one time or the voice you swear you heard coming from your basement was something other-worldly? You’re actually in the majority. A new study finds that most Americans believe they’ve seen a ghost at some point in their lives. As Halloween approaches, Groupon sought to find out how many people feel they’ve had paranormal experiences. In a poll of 2,000 adults, researchers found that about six in 10 Americans say they’ve indeed encountered a ghost. Perhaps even more surprisingly, four in 10 respondents believe their pet has seen one too. As to what people did when they had the spooky encounter? Most admit they screamed and ran away. In fact, men were twice as likely as women to shriek and head for the hills, the survey showed, but women tended to scream much louder. Other respondents admit to crying, hiding, and even fainting when seeing a ghost. 00:35:00Mainstream Mental Healthnomental health,Dr. John Huber,Kirstin Walker, self help, healingAmerican Families Spend Just 37 Minutes Of Quality Time Together Per Day, Survey FindsLiving on Automatic: How Emotional Conditioning Shapes Our Lives and Relationshihttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/11/28/living-on-automatic-how-emotional-conditioning-shapes-our-lives-and-relationshiHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/11/28/living-on-automatic-how-emotional-conditioning-shapes-our-lives-and-relationshi/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/11/28/living-on-automatic-how-emotional-conditioning-shapes-our-lives-and-relationshiWed, 28 Nov 2018 15:00:00 GMTLiving on Automatic: How Emotional Conditioning Shapes Our Lives and RelationshiChristine B.L. But for those with an “internet addiction,” ending an online session may cause measurable increases in heart rate and blood pressure that mimic what addicts experience during withdrawal. Scientists from Swansea University and Milan University had previously studied anxiety levels in people who overuse the internet. This time, they set out to determine what happens to people physically when they have an unhealthy attachment to their online time. Struggling to disconnect? A new study finds that people with internet addiction suffer common withdrawal symptoms when they can’t log back on. “We have known for some time that people who are over-dependent on digital devices report feelings of anxiety when they are stopped from using them,” explains Professor Phil Reed of Swansea University and the study’s lead author. “But now we can see that these psychological effects are accompanied by actual physiological changes.” A cross-section of typical internet users — men and women ranging in age from 18 to 33 years of age — participated in the study. Most of the 144 individuals used the internet an average of five hours a day and spent the majority of that time on social media and shopping. Their heart rate and blood pressure were checked before and after a short online session. Participants assessed their own anxiety and level of internet addiction. Those who admitted to spending too much time online (40%) had higher heart rates and blood pressure — and a matching anxiety level — following the end of the internet session.   00:32:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoDr. John Huber,Kristin Walker, mental health, psychology, healingAre You Addicted? Dating back to the 1970s, Duke has appeared in a number of popular films, including Car Wash, American Gigolo, Commando, Predator, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Fewer still might be aware of Duke’s extraordinary accomplishments off-screen—as a talented director, producer, entrepreneur, and humanitarian.  Bill Duke: My 40-Year Career on Screen and behind the Camera is the memoir of a Hollywood original. In an industry that rarely embraces artists of color, Duke first achieved success as an actor then turned to directing. After helming episodes of ratings giants Dallas, Falcon Crest, Hill Street Blues, and Miami Vice, Duke progressed to feature films like A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover, Hoodlum, and Sister Act 2. In this candid autobiography, Duke recalls the loving but stern presence of his mother and father, acting mentors like Olympia Dukakis, and the pitfalls that nearly derailed his career, notably an addiction to drugs. Along the way, readers will encounter familiar names like Danny Glover, Laurence Fishburne, Forest Whitaker, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Whoopi Goldberg. From his Broadway debut in 1971 to the establishment of the Duke Media Foundation, which trains and mentors young filmmakers, Duke has been breaking the rules of what it means to triumph in the entertainment industry.  Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/Bill-Duke-40-Year-Career-Screen/dp/1538105551/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542487061&sr=8-1&keywords=Bill+Duke 00:27:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoBill Duke,Actor, celebrity, entertainment, psychologyDating back to the 1970s, Duke has appeared in a number of popular films, including Car Wash, American Gigolo, Commando, Predator, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Why do lottery winners often go broke and ruin their lives?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/11/09/why-do-lottery-winners-often-go-broke-and-ruin-their-livesSelf Helphttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/11/09/why-do-lottery-winners-often-go-broke-and-ruin-their-lives/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/11/09/why-do-lottery-winners-often-go-broke-and-ruin-their-livesFri, 09 Nov 2018 17:00:00 GMTWhy do lottery winners often go broke and ruin their lives?Alexander Korelin has been involved in the financial community since 1967 when he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington with a dual major in Economics and Russian literature. Indeed, a young adult whose brain has been “wired” to be innovative, think critically, and problem solve is at a tremendous competitive advantage in today’s increasingly complex and competitive world. Because of this, parents should consciously seek to foster independence, problem solving, critical thinking, and reasoning in their young children. This can be done by implementing an intuitive developmental “dance” between parents and their developing children; which provides everything needed to foster and nurture proper brain development and automatically yields hundreds of thousands of learning opportunities during critical learning periods. It is vital to bear in mind that the acquisition of problem-solving skills is the direct result of children’s immature, incomplete, and often incorrect attempts to engage with the world that trigger authentic feedback and consequences. Rather than being psychologically damaging events, a child’s unsuccessful attempts are actually opportunities for them to learn persistence and resilience—as well as how to think when things don’t work out quite as they hoped. Indeed, “failure” and overcoming failure are essential events that trigger that neurological development that underpins thinking ability: Opportunities for a child to try—and to fail and then try again—are a crucial part of learning and brain development and should be sought out rather than avoided. 00:36:00Mainstream Mental Healthnomental health, critical thinking skills, psychology,Dr. John Huber, depressionIt is vital to bear in mind that the acquisition of problem-solving skills is the direct result of children’s immature, incomplete, and often incorrect attemptsAn Introspective Interview with Paul William Hobbyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/10/30/an-introspective-interview-with-paul-william-hobbyHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/10/30/an-introspective-interview-with-paul-william-hobby/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/10/30/an-introspective-interview-with-paul-william-hobbyTue, 30 Oct 2018 14:30:00 GMTAn Introspective Interview with Paul William HobbyPaul William Hobby, J.D., serves as a Founding Partner in 1999, Managing Partner and Chairman of Genesis Park LP. It’s recognized as part of an effort to bring awareness to progress of acupuncture and oriental medicine as alternatives to traditional medical practices. The medical profession is really picking up on the use of acupuncture as an alternative to opioids for pain management and the treatment of other health conditions. Acupuncture has gained popularity for its ability to provide relief without having to take medications, and works effectively as a treatment for pain management. The practice of acupuncture can have a positive impact on the opioid epidemic in the United States because as a treatment for pain or other health conditions it helps reduce the use of painkillers and opioids that some users find highly addictive.  What is Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day? ? It is part of an effort designed to increase public awareness of the progress, promise, and benefits of acupuncture and Oriental medicine to treat pain and addiction. ? Oct. 24 marks the 16th annual AOM day. We are celebrating this year in partnership with the NCCAOM – the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Why has there been a sudden increase of acupuncture use in the United States? ? Acupuncture has gained popularity because it provides relief without having to take medications. ? Acupuncture does not cause addiction tendencies like traditional opioids prescribed for the management of pain or other health conditions. Doctors can be chronically hurt from PTSD--watching people suffer and die.  If PTSD originates from a moment where one's life is either threatened, or one witnesses another experiencing the same and associates into it, then doctors (nurses etc) may experience micro traumas that accumulate in a PTSD like syndrome.  Especially if professional lines are blurred (you fail to keep your distance).  The best doctors both engage emotionally and keep it professional so as not to burn out--a difficult balance to manage. ----------------------------------------- Dr. John Huber (www.mainstreammentalhealth.org) is the Chairman for Mainstream Mental Health, a non-profit organization that brings lasting and positive change to the lives of individuals that suffer from mental health issues.  A mental health professional for over twenty years, Dr. Huber is a Clinical Forensic Psychologist    00:30:00Mainstream Mental Healthnotrauma, post traumatic stress disorder,PTSD,medical, emergency RoomFeaturing Dr. Larry Burchett / ER DoctorCan Love Really Change the Brain? How does the brain change when someone is in a relationship? Intense attraction and feelings of connection between two people can actually cause biological changes in the brain. When a person is in a relationship, their brain release specific chemicals including dopamine and oxytocin. This can lead to a sense of euphoria and a strong sense of attachment to their partner. They can act differently by wanting to spend more time with their significant other, participating in romantic gestures and being more expressive about their emotions.  2. Can being in love, or being in a relationship, change you -- or even affect your brain chemistry? Being in love can change you by making you more vulnerable and conscious of your emotions. I have also seen it heighten sensitivity in people who may have been emotionally withdrawn before. There are not exactly permanent brain chemistry changes but it can definitely lead to more careful behaviors for those who have been in love before. They want the euphoria feeling again but are guarded about letting their guard down, especially if the last relationship ended with heartbreak. Its a form of classic conditioning. You're more hesitant to talk the stove if you got burned before.  00:21:00Mainstream Mental Healthnoself help, love, psychology, falling in love, relationshipsHow does the brain change when someone is in a relationship?Mental Health Perspectiveshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/10/19/mental-health-perspectivesHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/10/19/mental-health-perspectives/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/10/19/mental-health-perspectivesFri, 19 Oct 2018 15:00:00 GMTMental Health PerspectivesFeaturing Dr. John Huber & Kristin Sunata Walker - http://www.mainstreammentalhealth.org/ What You Halloween Costume Reveals About You  Halloween costumes are a great way to peer into your friend or loved one’s mind, personality or mood for the day! For example, individuals who choose political figures may reflect party affiliations, who they consider to be polarizing news figures or preferred candidates. Guys who opt for a pirate costume may reflect their inner rebellious spirit, fearlessness, or secret desire for criminality and decadent behavior. A sex kitten may reflect a woman who wants to exhibit sex appeal but is not allowed to express that side for fear of judgment while a nurse may want to exhibit warmth and care during the day and sexuality at night. Saturday’s confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh caused some Americans to celebrate and others to explode in anger. The days leading up to Kavanaugh being sworn in saw hateful, vulgar rhetoric being spewed between millions. Has the rubicon been crossed where Americans are now too politically radicalized? Austin, TX Based - Clinical Forensic Psychologist Dr. John Huber is available for an analysis and interviews. In previous years, when Americans fought among themselves over political or social issues, there was an underling mutual respect shared. Almost a “I disagree with you but, were are brothers and sisters under one nation.” Today, the fighting has gotten much more vicious and the decorum & respect once shared is gone. If married couples fought the way today’s Americans do, they’d probably get divorced with mutual restraining orders. Being on the wining or losing side of a political movement (or debate) can take a psychological toll on an individual. Experiencing intense stress, anger and anxiety over whether your side comes out on top may lead to depression, burn out, and even withdrawal from social engagements. According to the United States Election Project, nearly half of eligible voters (46.9 percent of approximately 231,556,622 people) did not vote in the 2016 election. As negative as this sounds, it could also imply that nearly half of Americans aren’t engaged in bitter, political fighting. Americans may be at their political wits end right now however, it shouldn’t deter anyone from still being cordial and respectful to one another.  00:11:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoBrett Kavanaugh, psychology, self help, sexual assault, healingSaturday’s confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh caused some Americans to celebrate and others to explode in anger.Mental Health Perspectives: Retraumatization in the Wake of Kavanaugh Allegationhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/09/29/mental-health-perspectives-retraumatization-in-the-wake-of-kavanaugh-allegationSelf Helphttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/09/29/mental-health-perspectives-retraumatization-in-the-wake-of-kavanaugh-allegation/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/09/29/mental-health-perspectives-retraumatization-in-the-wake-of-kavanaugh-allegationSat, 29 Sep 2018 19:00:00 GMTMental Health Perspectives: Retraumatization in the Wake of Kavanaugh AllegationIn the hallowed halls of Washington, DC, a drama is being played out for the entire world to witness; the confirmation hearing to the Supreme Court for Brett Kavanaugh. In the minds and hearts and bodies of sexual assault survivors, something even more powerful is rampaging through. In increasing numbers, people are coming forward to share their #metoo stories following the allegations from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and now two other women who say that he perpetrated sexual assault in one form or another in his teens and early adulthood. He adamantly denies any wrongdoing, stating that he was a virgin “many years” into college even though none of his alleged victims have made claims of rape or sexual penetration. As a result of being bombarded with this information on the news and via social media there is a heightened sense of anxiety and PTSD symptoms among those who report one or more assaults throughout their lifetimes. These triggers re-traumatize. The invasive encounters range from unwanted or coercive touch to violent penetration, from one perpetrator to gang rape, from stranger attack to date rape, from incest to on the job aggression. The gender of the perpetrators and survivors are across the spectrum, but the majority coming forth are female identified. Clarifying Statistics Less than one-quarter of sexual assaults are committed by strangers, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). Experiments reveal that such “sightings” derive from the psychology of the observers rather than from supernatural sources. Experiments show these proclivities. If many sources on cable TV and the Internet are to be believed, the world is currently under attack by a variety of supernatural forces, apparently acting in concert. Such reports are ubiquitous. Aliens appear at night on deserted country roads. The ghosts of hoary and defunct Scottish peers turn up on castle battlements, demanding retribution for ancient defeats at the hands of the Sassenach. Bigfoot, all eight or nine feet of him, runs past a given cabin on his way to some cryptozoological tryst—and all of it winds up on television. What, exactly, is going on? There is a difficulty in explaining many of these paranormal “sightings.” At first, one might expect that the witnesses to these phenomena would be residents of the wilder shores of psychological instability; however, many of the people who report these things are sober, educated, reasonable individuals. Many are actively adverse to publicity, and an appreciable fraction of them passes polygraph tests. In short, many of these witnesses—in fact, probably the majority of them—are neither lying nor mentally ill. They have normal nervous systems, and they are convinced that they have experienced something extraordinary.   00:30:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoPsychology, mental health,Dr. John Huber,Kristin Walker, paranormalWith Dr. John Huber & Kristin WalkerMental Health Perspectives: Video Game Shooter Motives Probedhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/09/07/mental-health-perspectives-video-game-shooter-motives-probedHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/09/07/mental-health-perspectives-video-game-shooter-motives-probed/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/09/07/mental-health-perspectives-video-game-shooter-motives-probedFri, 07 Sep 2018 14:00:00 GMTMental Health Perspectives: Video Game Shooter Motives ProbedJacksonville Shooting: Gunman's Motive Probed; Gamers Call For More Security At Events Authorities continued to probe Monday why a player at a video-game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, gunned down two people and wounded 11 others Sunday, an incident that has prompted calls for more security at gaming events. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the lone shooter, who is believed to be David Katz, 24, of Baltimore, was among the dead and had killed himself. No motive has been revealed yet. Some media reports said Katz was upset about losing an intense game. FBI agents, some in bulletproof vests with long guns, searched a family home of the man authorities believe is behind the attack in Baltimore, according to FBI spokesman Dave Fitz. The agents could be seen entering an upscale townhome complex near the city's Inner Harbor. The violence broke out during a Madden NFL 19 video game tournament that was held in a gaming bar that shared space with the Chicago Pizza and Sports Grille in an entertainment complex along the St. Johns River in Jacksonville.    The incident stunned gamers and sparked questions about security at gaming events. They are typically livestreamed from local bars or other gathering spots; the largest are held in sports arenas. The film is the story of a massive great white that terrorizes a seaside community, and the image of the cover alone—the exposed jaws of a massive shark rising upward in murky water—is enough to inject fear into the hearts of would-be swimmers. Other thrillers have perpetuated the theme of sharks as villains. SHARK ATTACK STATISTICS:  https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/odds/compare-risk/death/  According to the National Safety Council, your chances of getting attacked by a shark are nearly one in twelve million and your chances of dying if you are attacked are one in four million. You should not be afraid to go into the water. The 1975 film “Jaws” seems to have had a profound psychological impact on Americans spanning multiple generations. The idea of being devoured alive is horrifying and that fear has kept an untold number of individuals out of the ocean. When Discovery Channel does their annual “Shark Week” blitz of programming, I’m sure it has a chilling effect on some.   Fear can cause some people to take greater care and caution (especially when swimming) however, too much of it can prevent you from enjoying the great things that life has to offer. The key here is balance.  00:24:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoShark Attack, sharks,Shark Week,Jaws, psychologyWith Dr. Huber & Kristin Walker105 questions that could predict PTSDhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/07/20/105-questions-that-could-predict-ptsdHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/07/20/105-questions-that-could-predict-ptsd/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/07/20/105-questions-that-could-predict-ptsdFri, 20 Jul 2018 20:00:00 GMT105 questions that could predict PTSDEmma Yasinski is a science journalist. Analysis of a national survey of 1,787 young adults (published 12/16) found that the use of multiple social media platforms is more strongly associated with depression and anxiety among young adults than the amount of time spent online. People who reported using the most platforms (seven to 11) had more than three times the risk of depression and anxiety than people who used the least amount (zero to 2 platforms). People who use many different SM platforms multitask, frequently switching between applications or engaging in social media on multiple devices. Multitasking is related to poorer attention, cognition, and mood. Other potential problems include an increased risk of anxiety in trying to keep up with the rules and culture associated with each one and more opportunity to commit a mistake since attention is divided.   00:28:00Mainstream Mental Healthnosocial media, psychology, facebook, harmful effects,PTSDWith Julie Rosenberg, M.D. Pediatric Oncologist and Health Optimization ExpertMental Health Perspectives: Summer Jobs That Can Harm Your Mental Healthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/07/06/mental-health-perspectives-summer-jobs-that-can-harm-your-mental-healthHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/07/06/mental-health-perspectives-summer-jobs-that-can-harm-your-mental-health/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/07/06/mental-health-perspectives-summer-jobs-that-can-harm-your-mental-healthFri, 06 Jul 2018 19:30:00 GMTMental Health Perspectives: Summer Jobs That Can Harm Your Mental HealthAs the school year concludes, millions of Americans will engage in a number of activities this Summer – some of which may include seasonal employment. Despite graduating valedictorian from one of the nation’s top chiropractic colleges and running a thriving practice, Dr. Steve found that his outer success did little to calm his inner turmoil. Thus began a thirty year journey to understand the root of his suffering. His exploration of Western psychotherapy, Eastern teachings of mindfulness, hypnosis, and the science of neurology provided profound insight into the universal nature and cause of suffering; the subconscious mind… which ultimately led to the creation of his successful UnHypnosis system and bestselling book. Blending his teachings with a long time passion for comedy and magic, Dr. Steve developed a series of insightful, fun presentations about mastering the subconscious mind which were quickly embraced by organizations for their ability to get people in action. When someone says “I am offended” they are outwardly expressing their negative internalization of information. Being upset, happy, or sad is always an individual choice and everyone can respond to information differently. When someone says “I am offended” they are letting others know they are hurt and in a way they are seeking an external solution to an internal problem. When large groups of people who are outraged protest against whatever individual or institution has upset them, they may be seeking to remove the external stimulation and even punishing it for existing in the first place.  Unfortunately, unless a persons internalization process towards a particular external stimuli changes, they will continue to be hurt and be negatively affected by it.   A person who is perpetually offended (by a wide range of things) may indeed be suffering from a mental disorder and one of them may be narcissism. Narcissistic individuals feel only their perspective matters so anything that challenges their beliefs can be a quick means to an emotional provocation. Perpetually offended individuals can may also be suffering from low self esteem or have an intolerance & acceptance for others. Perpetually offended individuals may also seek to dominate and control others.    00:21:00Mainstream Mental Healthnomental health, psychology, health, offensive,Dr. John HuberMental Health Perspectives with Kristin WalkerMental Health Perspectives with Kristin Walkerhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/27/mental-health-perspectives-with-kristin-walkerHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/27/mental-health-perspectives-with-kristin-walker/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/27/mental-health-perspectives-with-kristin-walkerSun, 27 May 2018 02:00:00 GMTMental Health Perspectives with Kristin WalkerWhy do so many powerful men behave like Harvey Weinstein? This psychologist has some theories. Dacher Keltner is a professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. (Courtesy Dacher Keltner) Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein is not an anomaly. He is just another man who attained great power. And as Lord Acton famously said, power corrupts. In Weinstein’s case, that corruption took the form of preying on women. Power also distorts and blinds some who hold it to the real feelings of those around them. So goes the argument put forward in the latest online edition of the Harvard Business Review, the nation’s premier journal of corporate wisdom and theory. In an essay titled “Sex, Power and the Systems That Enable Men Like Harvey Weinstein,” psychologist Dacher Keltner explains: Powerful men, studies show, overestimate the sexual interest of others and erroneously believe that the women around them are more attracted to them than is actually the case. Powerful men also sexualize their work, looking for opportunities for sexual trysts and affairs, and along the way leer inappropriately, stand too close, and touch for too long on a daily basis, thus crossing the lines of decorum — and worse. If you look back over the course of your life, do you feel you took advantage of every opportunity that came your way? Or, are you living with the weight of regret? No matter how accomplished you may be, it’s true that everyone experiences the harsh reality of knowing they failed to take action (link is external) in pursuing something they wanted for themselves. Is there any other way, really? These are the inevitable realities of living a complex life, a life full of ups and downs. And perhaps, in theory, there’s a small handful of (superpowered) people living regret-free lives. But for the vast majority of us, regret is a real thing that we have to face. So whether you bemoan doing something you wish you hadn’t or miss doing something you wish you had, regret is a universal emotion. No wonder psychologists have taken a keen interest in the topic. The study of regret goes beyond just missed opportunities and regrettable actions. Recently, researchers have begun to explore the link between regret and a person’s general self-concept. They have started asking such questions as: Do you have a clear sense of who you are, and are you living up to the person you want to be? Are you living your life in a way that fulfills your duties and responsibilities to others? 00:13:00Mainstream Mental Healthnomental health, psychology, health, regret,EmotionsNew research shows that we regret the couldas more than the shouldas. Why Do New Dads Suffer From Postpartum Depression?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/21/why-do-new-dads-suffer-from-postpartum-depressionHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/21/why-do-new-dads-suffer-from-postpartum-depression/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/21/why-do-new-dads-suffer-from-postpartum-depressionMon, 21 May 2018 23:00:00 GMTWhy Do New Dads Suffer From Postpartum Depression?Dr. Carly Snyder is an attending physician on staff in the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Snyder is the Director of Women’s Health for Family WEBSITE: https://www.carlysnydermd.com  TOPIC:  Study Reveals Why New Dads Suffer From Postpartum Depression It has to do with hormones. It may sound like a stretch to cite hormones as the reason men suffer from postpartum depression, but a new study in the journal Hormones and Behavior does just that. Researchers found that new dads may experience postpartum depression after the birth of their child due to hormonal shifts in testosterone levels. Their results found that men who saw a drop in testosterone levels after their kid’s birth were far more likely to be depressed. Previous studies have confirmed that testosterone in men and even in animals plummets upon the birth of a child to prepare the male for fatherhood.   00:28:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoPregnancy,POST PARTUM DEPRESSION,psychology,Dr. Huber, childrenDr. Carly Snyder is an attending physician on staff in the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Medical CenterMental Heath Perspectives: Why We Are Obsessed With The Royal Familyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/20/mental-heath-perspectives-why-we-are-obsessed-with-the-royal-familyHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/20/mental-heath-perspectives-why-we-are-obsessed-with-the-royal-family/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/05/20/mental-heath-perspectives-why-we-are-obsessed-with-the-royal-familySun, 20 May 2018 23:00:00 GMTMental Heath Perspectives: Why We Are Obsessed With The Royal FamilyPrince Harry & Meghan Markle Marry This Week - Why People Are Obsessed With the Royals?  By now, you likely know that Prince William and Kate Middleton had their third child, Louis, who joins older siblings George and Charlotte. An armed person walked into an art class at the school and began firing what looked like a shotgun. This is the third school shooting in eight days, and the 22nd since the beginning of the year in the United States. Coping Tips Talk about it - Ask for support from people who care about you and who will listen to your concerns. Receiving support and care can be comforting and reassuring. It often helps to speak with others who have shared your experience so you do not feel so different or alone. Turn it off and take a break - You may want to keep informed, but try to limit the amount of news you take in whether it’s from the Internet, television, newspapers or magazines. While getting the news informs you, being overexposed to it can actually increase your stress. The images can be very powerful in reawakening your feeling of distress. Take care of yourself - Engage in healthy behaviors to enhance your ability to cope with excessive stress. Eat well-balanced meals, get plenty of rest and build physical activity into your day. Avoid alcohol and drugs because they can suppress your feelings. Featured Guest: Mark Lewis has three words for new grads seeking advice on how to find success: Give a damn! For millions who grew up watching The Cosby Show and thinking Bill Cosby was a beloved individual – their illusion has been shattered. People may experience waves of anger, sadness, and even depression that emulate the response when someone in their life has betrayed them. We cannot underestimate the mental health impact that Cosby’s guilty verdict will have on individuals who thought of Cosby as a surrogate TV Dad especially if their real parents were absent or minimally attentive.  Another reason this is a very sad day for America is because for so many years, Cosby’s victims were ignored over their stories of sexual assault. This should be a deafening wake up call to all Americans that sexual assault cannot be tolerated in any capacity and that no public figure is above the hand of justice. In America it seems far too often that beloved personas & role model are revealed to have one or more reprehensible skeletons in their closets. Who is really who they say they are? Can anyone be trusted to set the right example?  For America’s children and adults, they don’t have to turn on the TV to find an adequate role model & they don’t have to search far and wide for one either. They just have to live their lives with honor & integrity and they will become a role model unto themselves. From a mental health perspective, trusting yourself to do the right thing and knowing that you will do the right thing is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. 00:20:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoBill Cosby, mental health,Self help, psychology,Dr. HuberWe cannot underestimate the mental health impact that Cosby’s guilty verdict will have on individuals who thought of Cosby as a surrogate TV DadBill Cosby Found Guilty - How Sexual Assault Affects Your Healthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/04/26/bill-cosby-found-guilty--how-sexual-assault-affects-your-healthHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/04/26/bill-cosby-found-guilty--how-sexual-assault-affects-your-health/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/04/26/bill-cosby-found-guilty--how-sexual-assault-affects-your-healthThu, 26 Apr 2018 23:00:00 GMTBill Cosby Found Guilty - How Sexual Assault Affects Your HealthHow Sexual Harassment Affects Your Health Research concerning the health impact of sexual assault has long confirmed that women who have been assaulted, abused, and/or harassed suffer both emotional and physical consequences including acute stress, PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, gynecological concerns, miscarriage, preterm birth, eating disorders, and even obesity (with over seventy- five percent of obese women reporting unwanted sexual advances). Privacy is an issue that many people are concerned about and when their conversations and emails are no longer secure it can have some profound psychological effects.  Increased Stress & Anxiety Have you ever sent an email to someone when you weren’t in a total zen-like state? The loss of privacy can substantially elevate a person’s stress and anxiety levels as they feverously go through hundreds of e-mails to see if what the said was insensitive, offensive, sexist or even racist. The fear that these correspondences could one day be made public could also cause some individuals to shudder with fear.  Conformity  A loss of privacy can cause some individuals to become overly fearful of offending others. This fear can put pressure on the individual to conform to the group culture, thoughts, and beliefs rather than develop their own thoughts and beliefs.    Dr. John Huber (www.mainstreammentalhealth.org) is the Chairman for Mainstream Mental Health, a non-profit organization that brings lasting and positive change to the lives of individuals that suffer from mental health issues.   Produced by Goldman McCormick PR       00:19:00Mainstream Mental Healthnomental health, psychology,Dr. John Huber, self help, facebook privacyPrivacy is an issue that many people are concerned about and it can have some profound psychological effects. What Is The Psychology of a Near Death Experience?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/03/21/what-is-the-psychology-of-a-near-death-experienceHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/03/21/what-is-the-psychology-of-a-near-death-experience/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2018/03/21/what-is-the-psychology-of-a-near-death-experienceWed, 21 Mar 2018 23:00:00 GMTWhat Is The Psychology of a Near Death Experience?Psychiatrists are likely to come into contact with patients who have had near-death experiences, who may have a variety of reactions to the experience, and who may benefit from psychotherapy. Yes, there are some nice emails that may come daily, but they are not written by a grief expert, and they don't touch the process of grief and recovery. As a former hospice medical social worker, a therapist, a Grief Recovery Facilitator, and, most importantly, as someone who has walked this walk, those did not fit for me. They also did not help the folks I worked with- they felt like happy thoughts, not helping hands. I also wanted a program that was distinctly not faith based. That's not to say that those who have a strong faith tradition should not rest heavily on that after a loss. Is it a positive body image mindset or living a healthy lifestyle? Why can’t we have both? People show significant improvement in social well-being and mental health when they live a healthy lifestyle. By facing your fears through a meditative exercise like swimming, you can be coached into creating a positive mindset that will help you truly want to live a healthy lifestyle. First, what happens to our health physically, emotionally, and spiritually when we're 50+ pounds overweight? The tricky part is that once our bodies are carrying extra weight, it becomes exponentially harder to lose it. We lose the ability to process calories correctly and the weight comes off slower. Plus, according to research gathered by Harvard Health Publications, being moderately overweight more than doubles the risk of over FIFTY different health conditions, including depression. However, if we dig deeper and examine Santa’s personality qualities it reveals that this is a deeply disturbed individual. The fact that Santa “sees you when you’re sleeping and knows when you’re awake” is a characteristic associated with tyrants. It’s quite disturbing. The all-seeing eye keeps those who are observed in a perpetual state of fear. Having privacy and personal space are positive components to an individuals mental health. Santa Claus has a naughty and nice list which reveals he is judgmental. According to Caroline J. Simon Ph.D “Being judgmental distorts our perception of other people, of ourselves and of what matters most in living a well-lived human life. It feeds on and engenders a lack of sympathetic understanding of others.  It is often linked with other related character flaws: hypocrisy, self-righteousness, malice, insensitivity, and the enjoyment of destructive gossip.” Santa is grossly overweight which could indicate that he is an emotional eater. It could also indicate that he may not think too highly of himself knowing the long term effects of obesity can be heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and others.  Santa only works one day a year which may reveal that he has a lack of motivation or ambition to do more things with his life. Santa still wears the same outfit he’s worn for the past two hundred plus years which could also indicate that he’s not a risk taker. Overall, I think that Santa Claus should start seeing a therapist because he does have a plethora of issues that deserve immediate attention. Anyone who has survived a horrific event knows that just because a body remains in motion does not mean everything will simply “go back to normal.” The chemistry of the brain and the body changes, impacting our relationships, our choices, and how we experience the world around us. Yet, we rarely find out what actually happens to people as they try to move on from a life-threatening experience—especially children, who are just beginning to develop an understanding of the world around them.   00:43:00Mainstream Mental Healthno9/11,September 11,terrorism,Post traumatic stress disorder,PTSDFeatured Guest Helaina Hovitz267087c8-1aed-4359-a4e4-290176f8b950NYPD Retired Det. Lou Telano / The inspiration for the ’70s “Starsky and Hutch”The NYPD’s Lone Ranger always sits tall in the saddle in his kemosabe’s memories. Retired Det. Lou Telano can’t help but grin when he recalls all the adventures he had with his late partner John Sepe in the 1960s and ’70s — when the weapons the two plainclothes investigators had ranged from their trusty revolvers and street smarts to, when necessary, long skirts and high heels. “We weren’t the first cops to do undercover work, but we definitely paved the way,” said Telano, also 76, who still proudly refers to himself as Sepe’s “Tonto” as he regales listeners to his radio show on WGBB. The two cowboy cops — the inspiration for the ’70s TV show “Starsky and Hutch” — made an art form out of “decoy work,” in which cops dressed like potential victims to draw out criminals in high crime areas, according to Telano. Always act as if you are in total control. There's a quote often credited to Ignatius: "Pray as if God will take care of all; act as if all is up to you." (Cool quote.) The same premise applies to luck. Many people feel luck has a lot to do with success or failure. If they succeed, luck favored them, and if they fail, luck was against them. 2. Put aside things you have no ability to impact. Mental strength is like muscle strength--no one has an unlimited supply. So why waste your power on things you can't control? 3. See the past as valuable training and nothing more. The past is valuable. Learn from your mistakes. Learn from the mistakes of others. Then let it go. 4. Celebrate the success of others. Many people--I guarantee you know at least a few--see success as a zero-sum game: There's only so much to go around. When someone else shines, they think that diminishes the light from their stars. 00:06:00Mainstream Mental Healthnomental toughness, mental health,Self help, successful women,SuccessMental Toughness Tips By Dr. John HuberFive Minute Miracle: How To Help Someone Who's Experienced A Tragedyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/12/04/five-minute-miracle-how-to-help-someone-whos-experienced-a-tragedyHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/12/04/five-minute-miracle-how-to-help-someone-whos-experienced-a-tragedy/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/12/04/five-minute-miracle-how-to-help-someone-whos-experienced-a-tragedyMon, 04 Dec 2017 13:00:00 GMTFive Minute Miracle: How To Help Someone Who's Experienced A TragedyThe five stages of grief Experts used to talk about grief and closure, but it's now better acknowledged that grieving continues but changes, and there's a continuing bond with the person who has gone, says Cantwell-Bartl. However, according to the Mental Health Information Service, there are still five main stages. How to help someone who is grieving Be patient. Stay in regular contact and organise simple activities that will give the person an opportunity to talk - coffee, lunch or even a phone call. Be available to listen to the same story over and over - this helps with the feeling of disbelief that comes with loss. There will be times when grief is particularly intense - for example, on anniversaries and birthdays. Contact at this time can be especially supportive. Be aware that different cultures have rituals and ways of behaving after a bereavement. Death ends a life, not a relationship. Don't change the subject if the deceased's name comes up. Avoid well-meaning remarks such as: "She's lucky to have lived to such a ripe old age", or "It was God's will." Offer practical help such as doing household tasks or preparing meals. 00:04:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoSelf help, trauma,PTSD,beravement, mental healthDr. Huber offers his insight & advice to helping those who have experienced a traumatic eventHow can we still achieve our dreams despite experiencing traumahttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/11/30/how-can-we-still-achieve-our-dreams-despite-experiencing-traumaHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/11/30/how-can-we-still-achieve-our-dreams-despite-experiencing-trauma/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/11/30/how-can-we-still-achieve-our-dreams-despite-experiencing-traumaThu, 30 Nov 2017 03:00:00 GMTHow can we still achieve our dreams despite experiencing traumaHow can we still achieve our dreams despite experiencing a traumatic, life changing event? Ever since A Course in Miracles transformed the self-study / self-awareness arena from a niche market into a multi-million dollar industry, people have searched for guides, gimmicks and gurus to help them achieve spiritual transformation. Rob Moore, author of THE CONSCIOUSNESS PAPERS and the companion workbook SELECT WISDOM, spent decades on the search himself, never imagining that one day he would be called to deliver messages to help guide others to the knowledge that was being revealed through him. The Consciousness PapersFollowing a near-death experience in which Rob left the body and learned that everything beyond this life is going to be fine, he was able to embrace a new perspective on his existence here in the present armed with the knowledge that things were "as they should be." This escalated his internal desire to reach higher levels of truth, but meant deep changes like ending a long-time dependence on smoking, which he successfully overcame. Less than a month later, Rob perceived his first words from a higher place. As messages came down the pike, it rapidly became apparent that what was happening was beyond anything his brain could possibly produce; entire concepts were delivered to him that were beyond anything he had put conscious study into. He wrote them down and kept coming back to these pages again and again. As days passed into weeks and eventually years, the words became Rob's reality and, more profoundly, they illustrated levels of reality beyond his ability to cognitively formulate into sentences. After ruminating on these words for ten years, he felt compelled to publish THE CONSCIOUSNESS PAPERS: 90 Days of Consideration and its companion piece, SELECT WISDOM. Together they represent the organizing of these ideas into a simple, twice a day meditation on 'being' that will add up to a more fulfilling, rich and conscious life. 00:42:00Mainstream Mental HealthnoNear Death Experience, afterlife,Rob Moore, spiritual, self helpThe Consciousness PapersFollowing a near-death experience in which Rob left the body and learned that everything beyond this life is going to be fine, he was abWhat Are The Mental Health Benefits of Being Skilled At Firearms?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/11/09/what-are-the-mental-health-benefits-of-being-skilled-at-firearmsHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/11/09/what-are-the-mental-health-benefits-of-being-skilled-at-firearms/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mainstreammentalhealth/2017/11/09/what-are-the-mental-health-benefits-of-being-skilled-at-firearmsThu, 09 Nov 2017 03:00:00 GMTWhat Are The Mental Health Benefits of Being Skilled At Firearms?Charles Heller wears many hats.  Charles is one of 4 co-founders of The Arizona Citizens Defense League (AZCDL), and serves as media coordinator for that organization.  Charles is also the former executive director of Jews For The Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO), and serves as media coordinator. It might seem like they're always having fun, while you're left on the fringes. But in the long run, science says you might be better off. According to a recent study, people who have a few close friends in their teen years, as opposed to having many friends but fewer close relationships, benefit long-term. If you have a small but tight-knit friend group when you're 15, researchers found that when you're 25, you're likely to have more self-worth and fewer mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression. On the other hand, people who were more popular at age 15 are more likely to experience social anxiety a decade later. Over a period of 10 years, researchers followed 169 teens of varying backgrounds starting at age 15. Researchers checked in with the young people each year, asking about friendships and feelings of anxiety, social acceptance, self-worth, and symptoms of depression. At the end of the 10 years, researchers determined that those who had just a few close friends had less social anxiety, more self-worth, and fewer symptoms of depression. Ultimately, researchers say the study suggests that prioritizing close friendships when you're young could result in better mental health later on. Basically, not being popular might be a good thing. -------  Daniel French, a host on WCGO radio. This new report from the University of Texas at Austin, “Brain Drain: The Mere Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity,” was published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research. During this study, the UT Austin researchers found that someone’s ability to hold and process data significantly improved if his or her smartphone was in another room while taking a test to gauge attentional control and cognitive processes. Participants who kept their phones in a pocket or bag also outperformed those who kept their phones on the desk while taking the same test. =========== GUEST: Jessica Huber In addition to healing yourself with proper mental health treatment, you may also want to consider Reiki. According to new estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the largest disability worldwide with the number of people living with depression increasing by over 18% between 2005 and 2015. Furthermore, over 80% of the disease burden is in developing countries. In India’s case, the total cases of depressive disorders in 2015 were 5,66,75,969 — nearly 5% of population. The total cases of anxiety disorders in the same period were 3,84,250,93 — which is 3% of the population. The new data, released last week by WHO, shows that depression is ranked as the single largest contributor to global disability worldwide and now was the leading cause of global mental and physical disability. Depression is also the major contributor to suicide deaths, which number close to 8,00,000 a year. According to the NIMH, as many as 45% of mental health cases go untreated in this country, at a total potential cost of $147 billion per year. These statistics are devastating and also not widely known — but they’re not terribly controversial. What is controversial — or at least uncomfortable — is the idea that millennials suffer from more mental health issues than any previous generation. This challenges some of the common assertions that millennials are entitled, lazy and lack a work ethic or respect for The Dollar. Some 48 per cent of youngsters said that they experienced problems during their school years that prevented them from concentrating on their academic work. Of these, 46 per cent did not talk to anyone about their problems, mainly because they did not want other people to know that they were struggling. More than half (58 per cent) did not think that asking for help would solve the problem.  Growing up in poverty exposes children to greater levels of stress, which can lead to psychological problems later in life, a new study suggests. Researchers at Cornell University reported that kids who grow up poor are more likely to have reduced short-term spatial memory. The study also reported that such kids seem to be more prone to antisocial and aggressive behavior, such as bullying. Poor children are also more likely than kids from middle-income homes to feel powerless, the study authors suggested. Of course, the findings don’t mean that all children growing up in poverty will have these problems, only that the risk is higher, the researchers said.
