The African American Biography Series of 2013 brings to you the life of Mr. Nelson Mandela. Mr. Nelson Mandela  was born in 1918 in South Africa.  He is African not African American.  However, South African Black people have experienced many of the same injustices African Americans have endured as human beings.  These injustices are racism, poverty and inequality.  In 1962 at the age of 44, Nelson Mandela was arrested and convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government in South Africa.  He was sentenced to life imprisonment.  Nelson Mandela served time doing hard labor in Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison as well as Victor Verster Prison.  After 27 years and ongoing International campaigns lobbying for his release Nelson Mandela was finally set free.  It was now 1990, and Nelson Mandela was 71 years old.  After his release Nelson Mandela was elected President of South Africa and served from 1994 until 1999.  He transitioned South Africa into a multicultural democracy.  Mr. Nelson Mandela is now retired and is an advocate for a variety of social and human rights organizations.  In 1993 Mr. Nelson Mandela was awarded The Nobel Peace Prize which he shared with  F W de Klerk.
