Mad Mariner's MadCast: Buying E-Charting Software

On Mad Mariner's MadCast today, Editor Glen Justice interviewed Mark Doyle, author of Get Onboard With E-Charting, about how to evaluate and purchase electronic charting software for your boat.

In part three of a three-part podcast, Doyle explained e-charting packages in detail, based on extensive testing of 16 applications he and his wife conducted for the book. Doyle covered the different types of navigation software, including viewers, planners and full-featured applications; his picks across many price categories, from freeware to applications costing thousands of dollars; and his observations about the marine software market in general. It runs 30 minutes.

Among the PC software packages discussed are CARIS Easy View, EarthNC, Furuno MaxSea, Nobeltec VNS, Nobeltec Admiral, Chart Navigator Pro, Coastal Explorer, RayTech RNS, Fugawi Marine ENC, The Capn, SeaClear II, TIKI Navigator Pro, NavSim BoatCruiser and DigiBOAT Software-On-Board. Two Mac packages -- NavimaQ and MacENC -- are also discussed.

For more information on electronic charting, including a glossary of terms and other resources, see Mad Mariner's series Hard Facts on Software. The series gave rise to the book, Get Onboard With E-Charting, which took it to the next level.

Mad Mariner's MadCast covers all aspects of boats and boating. Look for more podcasts in the weeks ahead.
