Derrick Popham was born and raised in Six Mile, South Carolina. He attended D.W. Daniel High School and upon graduation joined the United States Marine Corps. After attending boot camp at Parris Island, he was stationed with 4th Ammunition Supply Company in Greenville, South Carolina as reserve Ammunition Technician. After one year in the reserves, he transferred to active duty as a 0331 machine gunner and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina with 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Division. While serving with 3/2 he deployed to twice to Iraq from February 2005 to October 2005 and from June 2006 to February 2007. In September of 2007, he was assigned to the School of Infantry East, as a Combat Instructor and was later assigned as the Chief Instructor for the Advance Machine Gun Leaders Course of Advanced Infantry Training Battalion.

Derrick, his wife Michelle, and two boys Cole and Kaeden, moved back to Six Mile after he was medically retired in February of 2012, due to injuries received in Iraq. In addition to serving with Upstate Warrior Solution, Derrick is pursuing a degree in Psychology with a minor in crisis response from Liberty University.
