One of the great speakers who gave a presentation at the November conference on bioethics in Southern California was Dr. Paul Byrne, M.D. Dr. Byrne is a neonatologist and pediatrician, internationally known speaker, author, expert on "brain death" and organ donation. His ongoing work to help patients targeted for euthanasia and organ donation when they still have a chance to live and recover shows that Dr. Byrne's expertise is matched by his compassion for his fellow human beings. He is demonstrating a very high standard of real care and service to humanity that deserves support.

To help spread awareness of issues connected to the sanctity of life, Dr. Byrne created the Life Guardian Foundation (www.lifeguardianfoundation.org). The Foundation helps people prepare for critical end of life decisions, and those any of us could be suddenly faced with in the event of traumatic injury to ourselves or those we love. The information and materials provided by the Foundation can save lives. We will talk about all the major aspects of his work, including the important issue of "brain death," which Dr. Byrne has exposed as simply a way to justify harvesting the organs of a patient who is very much alive. It's a topic we all need to understand, so that we don't mistakenly sacrifice a life that could very possibly be saved. You need to know about this.
