Discipline or Child Abuse?

In our society, how can we effectively correct our children without physical contact or violent, angry words. What form of discipline do children respond best to? Is discipline just child abuse and who decides? When is a spanking considered a malicious and brutal beating? Is the fear of discipline being considered child abuse prohibiting effective parenting? Can you rear a child without resorting to spankings?
