Author of the book, "Reframing the Latino Immigration Debate: Towards a Humanistic Paradigm," by San Diego State University Press (2013).
Dr. Alvaro Huerta, a Visiting Scholar at UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center, is an inter-disciplinary scholar of urban planning and Chicana/o studies. He conducts research on community development, immigration, social movements, ethnic economies, gendered labor niches and the informal economy. Dr. Huerta is the author of the book, Reframing the Latino Immigration Debate: Towards a Humanistic Paradigm, by San Diego State University Press (2013). He is also the co-editor of a forthcoming, edited volume on migration and immigration. He holds a B.A. in history and M.A. in urban planning from UCLA. He also holds a Ph.D. in city and regional planning from UC Berkeley.
Raised in a Tijuana slum and East Los Angeles' notorious Ramona Gardens housing project, Dr. Huerta is the product of public schools, from inner-city schools to elite universities. He's happily married to his wonderful wife, Antonia Montes. He's also the proud son of Mexican immigrants from a small rancho, Sajo Grande, in the beautiful state of Michoacán.
